Oscar nominees: Mo’Nique and Mariah?

Published by Clay Cane on Friday, May 15, 2009 at 12:00 am.

preciousI don’t think I’ve seen this much anticipation for a movie since Dreamgirls in 2006.  However, this is a different type of film – no glamour, no singing, no dancing.  A hardcore script, fearless acting, flawless direction by Lee Daniels and a new star in Gabourey Sidibe, who plays the lead.

Precious is based on the novel Push by SapphireWhile BET.com has been covering this movie for months, after the trailer debuted on Oprah yesterday, many people are declaring Oscar for Mo’NiqueEntertainment Weekly raved:

The trailer for the Sundance favorite Precious has hit the airwaves, and good heavens, it is stunning.“  EW continues, “I’ve caught wind of grumblings for a nomination for Mo’Nique before, and while it’s ludicrously irrational to make such proclamations based on a two-and-a-half minute trailer, I will confirm she does indeed look amazing. (That scene at 1:35? WOW.) Yes: Mo’Nique. Also known as the former host of VH1’s Charm School. And the star of Soul Plane. And Phat Girlz.”

Then, there is Mariah Carey, who plays a Harlem social worker.  Her performance has been praised as “pitch perfect.”  She is stripped down from the glam and “Glitter” – however, if anyone saw WiseGirls, you know that Mariah does have acting chops.  This just might put her over the top.

This is what acting is about — reinventing yourself down to your voice, look and style.

Precious is the story of an overweight teen who is struggling with poverty, identity and pregnancy.  The movie is directed by Lee Daniels and also includes Lenny Kravitz and Paula Patton.

I will go this far:  Unless Meryl Streep or Halle Berry has some tricks up their sleeves — Mo’Nique will get an Oscar nod in 2010 and Mariah Carey will at least get a  Golden Globe nomination.

Precious might just be the most important film about the lives of black women since The Color Purple.  Check out the trailer.

Also, don’t forget Mo’Nique has a new talkshow right here on BET!  Click here for a preview!

This looks like so good, had a sister crying at her desk watching it. I worked with at risk young adults when i was younger. Very similar to this movie. I learn so much, mainly how to the the best mother to my girls as possible. 1 thing a man or anyone can ever take from a women is her education!

for one , we don’t see enough black actors and actress .and the only recycled actors@actress, that we see are white hollywood, so we as black people we need to support who ever playing the part . but those roles are meet for Mo’nique , Mariah and for those actors . i think it ’s a good thing that they made this movie only blacks and ricans can understand want this film is really about.

I am so glad that this movie is coming out it’s not always about our at risk young men but what we as young teenage girl’s have to go through when there is no one you can not trust not even the very people that gave you life treat you like %#%@ because no one gave them the love that they where looking for so in return they have children and do not now how to treat them WOMEN WE NEED TO STOP PUTTING MEN BEFORE OUR CHILDREN. little girl learn there first relationship from seeing how there parents treat each other SO MEN BE MINDFUL OF HOW YOU TREAT YOUR WIFE OR GIRLFRIEND BECAUSE YOUR DAUGHTER IS WATCHING AND WILL ONE DAY WANT SOMEONE WHO IS GOING TO TREAT HER THE WAY SHE SEES YOU TREAT HER MOTHER.

I read the book and loved it. Cried like a baby and cheered this child on as she was able to transform her life and learn to love herself. Watching this clip has got me in tears. TEARS! And to whomever mentioned Beyonce in this post, please know that Beyonce’s performances, every last one of them, aren’t equipped to be mentioned alongside the awesome, raw, talent going on with Mo’Nique and Mariah in this feature. Trust and believe, Beyonce is on a different level…not theirs; it will take her years to get to the authenticity that these women have evolved to for this amazing film. Thanks.
