Oscar nominees: Mo’Nique and Mariah?

I don’t think I’ve seen this much anticipation for a movie since Dreamgirls in 2006. However, this is a different type of film – no glamour, no singing, no dancing. A hardcore script, fearless acting, flawless direction by Lee Daniels and a new star in Gabourey Sidibe, who plays the lead.
Precious is based on the novel Push by Sapphire. While BET.com has been covering this movie for months, after the trailer debuted on Oprah yesterday, many people are declaring Oscar for Mo’Nique. Entertainment Weekly raved:
“The trailer for the Sundance favorite Precious has hit the airwaves, and good heavens, it is stunning.“ EW continues, “I’ve caught wind of grumblings for a nomination for Mo’Nique before, and while it’s ludicrously irrational to make such proclamations based on a two-and-a-half minute trailer, I will confirm she does indeed look amazing. (That scene at 1:35? WOW.) Yes: Mo’Nique. Also known as the former host of VH1’s Charm School. And the star of Soul Plane. And Phat Girlz.”
Then, there is Mariah Carey, who plays a Harlem social worker. Her performance has been praised as “pitch perfect.” She is stripped down from the glam and “Glitter” – however, if anyone saw WiseGirls, you know that Mariah does have acting chops. This just might put her over the top.
This is what acting is about — reinventing yourself down to your voice, look and style.
Precious is the story of an overweight teen who is struggling with poverty, identity and pregnancy. The movie is directed by Lee Daniels and also includes Lenny Kravitz and Paula Patton.
I will go this far: Unless Meryl Streep or Halle Berry has some tricks up their sleeves — Mo’Nique will get an Oscar nod in 2010 and Mariah Carey will at least get a Golden Globe nomination.
Precious might just be the most important film about the lives of black women since The Color Purple. Check out the trailer.
Also, don’t forget Mo’Nique has a new talkshow right here on BET! Click here for a preview!

I can’t wait. Some great performances in this film. Unfortunately it will probably be upstaged by a Holocaust film. Sigh!
Also I hope beYAWNce takes notes.
@ T Grimes
It was renamed to avoid confusion with an action film called Push.
I AM BEYOND SPEECHLESS RIGHT NOW!!!
THIS IS WHAT REAL ACTING IS ABOUT, NOT TRYING TO KNOCK WHAT’S BEEN DONE IN THE PAST, BUT THIS MOVIE IS LOOKING LIKE IT’S GOING TO SET THE STANDARD FOR FUTURE MOVIES TO COME. ITS ABOUT TIME A MOVIE CAME ALONG THAT SHOWED THE VIEW OF LIFE FROM A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE OTHER THAN WHAT WE’VE BEEN SEEING
Wow!!! I will support this film
this is film is force each and everyone of us to take a cerefull look at ourself and the damage we deliberatly inflict on each other base on our own interiorised prejedices..
This is a movie that is well worth the wait and well worth me paying the money to go see! I love the teen playing in this movie since she played in “The War” a movie around youth black and white friends in early 70s MS. My daughter who is over weight and has issues with school kids talking about her has looked to this girl as a role model and has came out of her shell and does not worry about what folk think any more. In fact, she is also working on being her and being healthy. Back to the film: I cried at the preview so I know it a film of importance and will proved to be a thought provoking call to action on our most precious commodities our black daughters.
i know this movie is going too be sensational especially because mo is playing a really serious part yeah mariah going be doing her thing but mo got it down packed i can’t wait till this movie come out i already read the book i just can’t wait
I can’t wait to see this movie. I read the book, and I couldn’t put it down. Monique is the perfect person to play this role. Any and everyone should go and support this film because if it’s as good if not better than the book, it will get all the recognition it deserves!
@ Vanessa L. Freeman,
I own The War, it is one of my favorites. I thought she looked familiar! Thanks for pointing this out.
WOW it almost made me sit here and cry just looking at the trailer, i can’t wait to see the movie.
I haven’t seen the trailer, but I have read the novel and that story moved me and it was sad. I just hope they re-live what the novel offers. Because the novel will always be better, it give you details. So I know the movie will be nice.
Thank God, we need this film. I cannot wait for it, but I must because what else can I do. I just hope I don’t cry so hard, I can’t see to drive home.
wow
I am sorry , I do love Beyonce for the example she sets that you should work hard. That you don’t have to rely on looks alone, but you have to plan for the future too. I do feel Beyonce could use some work on her acting, I think instead of having major films, she should start off with small parts and grow. I don’t think Beyonce could carry this film, but I know in time she can grow into being a great actress. We have to go out and support this film, and let Hollywood know we are here. We need more african american directors, writers, producers because Hollywood doesn’t want us. We need more scripts like these and not those dumb “gangsta no real plot but, a bunch of naked women” films..
I ALMOST CRYED JUST MY WATCH THE PREVEIW. I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE TO REST OF THE MOVIE
this movie is gna be so tight I read the book
nah when this movie come out it will hit tha charts so hard…tha preview had me on tha edge of my chair…this is one movie i am defintely gonna go see!~#$*
This movie looks like it will be very powerful and why are people bringing up Beyonce’s name in nothing she has nothing to do with. People do that all the time on here and YouTube. I am a Beyonce fan and I believe she’s a good actress but I don’t think she’s trying to win an Oscar, I think she just wants to act. And for the people saying she’s overrated she’s not because she’s constantly doing stuff, people like Nicole Richie, Paris Hilton, and Lindsay Lohan are overrated. But anyway I’m not going to say Monique and Mariah Carey are getting to receive Oscar nominations based on this preview but their performances do look really deep and powerful.
Beyonce need to be in there !!!
I read the book about 7 years ago & recommend it to anyone who love to read . There has been talk of making it into a movie for the last three years. I can’t wait to see it.
