‘Precious’ Sets A Record

Published by Clay Cane on Monday, November 9, 2009 at 12:00 am.

monique-preciousMany were frustrated that one of the most anticipated films of the year, Precious, only had a limited release this weekend.  Don’t fret, there will be a nationwide release this Friday and the 20th.

However, for the theaters Precious was in — audiences spoke loud and clear.  There were reports of countless sold out shows with the movie only playing in 18 locations.  Precious raked in a whooping $1.8 million — this sets a record for a film in so little theaters.

According to IndieWire.com, “a stunning $1,800,000 from just 18 theaters over the weekend, averaging an essentially unheard of $100,000. That gives it the third best live action per-theater-average of all time, surpassed only by 2006’s ‘Dreamgirls’ and 2005’s ‘Brokeback Mountain.’ However, those two films had opened on 3 and 5 theaters respectively. ‘Precious’‘s wide-by-comparison 18 theaters make it all the more impressive.”

Also, just in opening weekend numbers, Precious is the fourth highest grossing Sundance Narrative Grand Jury Prize winner since 2000. There are predictions Precious will be the highest grossing Sundance Narrative Grand Jury Prize winner of the entire decade.

Congrats to the director, Lee Daniels. Read our interview with him here!

I live in Texas and am very unhappy that we have to wait to see this greatly anticipated film. Why aren’t the black films out everywhere like the others? Why is this industry still so Prejudice! I can guarantee that Ninja Assassin will be out everywhere. Still waiting.

This is not a Tyler perry movie!! He is not this creative. This is a lee daniels Movie, based on a Novel Written by Sapphire. Tyler perry and Oprah jut fell in love with the movie and gave it an endorsement. They figured that putting there ’seal of approval’ on it woul make it more popular. But the movie was already made before tyler perry even saw it.

Kudos for those who had a chance to see this movie. I read the book and can’t wait to see the movie. Unfortunately, it didn’t play in the Bay Area.

Just to let everyone know, this is not a Tyler Perry Movie.

I saw Precious 10:30am opening day and to my suprise there was a line. I thought I was the only one excited about the movie. All I can say is WOW! It was like I got a chance to take a peek into someones life and it wasn’t pretty. Somebody need to recieve an Oscar for this one! If they don’t recieve an Oscar for something, we can go ahead and say that the Academy awards is rigid! I plan to see it again and buy the DVD (not bootleg) when it becomes available. Please support this great movie. And big shots out to Gabourey Sidibe, what a wonderful job. Hopefully we’ll see her more often. She was to dang real.

Precious was amazing… but it was one of those emotional adrenaline rushing movies that you can only see once. .. Like, 8mm, What’s Love Got to Do With it, or American History X. Mo’Nique KILLED this role! KILLED IT!

I wanted to support the film, but didn’t want to leave the theater emotionally spent from witnessing the ongoing emotional, physical, and sexual abuse that Precious endured. I think Daniels did a good job of keeping the film’s heavy subject matter balanced with light humor, unfortunately for me, it came at the costly expense in impact. The sexual abuse was masked effectively, however, without the graphic nature of the incidents, I find that the audience missed identifying with just how miserable Precious’ life was.

I saw the movie in a mixed crowd. I was bothered by some of the audience laughter at times. It was clear that some audience members were so amused by some scenes that they totally missed the relevance. When Precious steals a bucket of chicken, the humor of the scene doesn’t allow the audience to really comprehend that the child eating for two and starving because her parent was not being a parent. When the students in the class were learning their ABCs at age 16, the humor took away from the dire circumstance that is teenage illiteracy. When Precious is forced by her mother to eat the plate of pigs feet because there was no collar greens, many people missed this force feeding scene as another extension of abuse by a mother who couldn’t handle a daughter who was more physically fit than her.

Watching the movie in mixed company was eye opening. While I was not personally turned off by the appearance of Precious, it was clear that many audience members were. Daniels stayed very true to the book (which I liked) and the cast members were fantastic in their roles.
