Spike Lee blasts Tyler Perry

The controversial Spike Lee is at it again — the legendary filmmaker is known for feuds with 50 Cent, Clint Eastwood and Tyler Perry might be next.
What’s strange is that during the press for Inside Man in 2006, Mr. Lee spoke highly of Tyler Perry. Maybe after Meet The Browns and House of Payne, Spike has a different perspective. Now, Lee says Perry’s films and television shows are a minstrel show. Perry has experienced this criticism before, but never from a fellow celebrity in the film world. Here is what the Do The Right Thing director told Ed Gordon on Our World with Black Enterprise, which aired this weekend:
“Each artist should be allowed to pursue their artistic endeavors but I still think there is a lot of stuff out today that is “coonery” and buffoonery. I know it’s making a lot of money and breaking records, but we can do better. … I am a huge basketball fan, and when I watch the games on TNT, I see these two ads for these two shows (Tyler Perry’s “Meet the Browns” and “House of Payne”) and I am scratching my head. … We got a Black president and we going back to Mantan Moreland and Sleep ‘n’ Eat?”
Spike continues…
“We’ve had this discussion back and forth. When John Singleton [made "Boyz in the Hood"], people came out to see it. But when he did “Rosewood,” nobody showed up. So a lot of this is on us! You vote with your pocketbook, your wallet. You vote with your time sitting in front of the idiot box, and [Tyler Perry] has a huge audience. We shouldn’t think that Tyler Perry is going to make the same film that I am going to make, or that John Singleton or my cousin Malcolm Lee [would make]. As African Americans, we’re not one monolithic group so there is room for all of that. But at the same time, for me, the imaging is troubling and it harkens back to “Amos n’ Andy.”"
Well, I know some folks might be angered by Spike’s comments, but he is a cinematic legend and has paved the way for someone like Tyler Perry. Therefore, if he has fair social critiques about his cohorts I think we should all take the time to listen, especially Black consumers.
Are you offended by Spike Lee’s comments?

I totally disagree with Spike. That is his opinion. I am a Tyler Perry fan and, a Spike Lee fan. I enjoy both their work. I think Tyler offers a lot of inspirational messages but, in a way that everyone can accept it, and from his perspective. Everything doesn’t have to be so serious all the time. I think a lot of people appreciate what he does, especially considering that his shows and movies are always #1 or #2. I think people should stop hating and understand that everyone has a voice in this world and, they can express it as they choose.
this is really ignorant when ever somebody black is doibg good someone always tries to down them spike lee you should support tyler not down him i dont care how bad his movies are we need some more black movies so spike shut up and sit down somewhere and stop hatin cause you aint makin no movies right now for the black community.
Spike, Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy…..Let a brother be what he gone be!!!. Damn I did not like everything you put out there but would never ever dis you publicly….Is there some hating going on? Why would you do such a thing? Because Tyler’s vision is not your vision…that does not mean he does not have talent. Some things I did not like that he put out there but the majority of his show’s I loved….As a fellow brother and movie maker you should be the last one to call Tyler out like you did. I always thought that you could not act and should not have been in any of your movies, and that was an opionion I left to my self….You should “Do the right thing” and let your opionions about Tyler be to yourself you look very low Spike very low… By the way when was the last time you made anyone laugh?
It floors me that we are so critical of one another. Always have been and I guess we always will. I don’t know about you guys but I want my kids to see our people on TV doing something positive, not walking aroundtaking their clothes off, cursing, sleeping with EVERYONE cause they can! It is comedy there is no harm done. I believe that Tyler Perry shows are funny and for the most part delivers a message. Some times we (Black Folks) take ourselves to serious and expect way to much out of black entertainers. Come on guys they are entertainers. Yes, a message SHOULD come across, but will it be suitable for you or your children, who knows? Not EVERYONE will be ENTERTAINED by it that’s a fact. Is that Tyler Perry fault no. We are the reason why we can’t succeed in life. I was always taught that if you can’t help than don’t hurt. We need to stop slapping OUR OWN PEOPLE in the face. We need to stand for something or you will fall for anything. I don’t like a lot of items on TV so guess what, me and my family don’t watch them and you have that right as well. Other cultures always hold us to a higher standard must we do it too? Oh and as for the Black President he has showed America time and time again that you have to stay true to yourself in spite of it all. People somethings is what it is… just jokes, just movies, just comedy, just rap… Its up to you to WAKE UP and learn to stand by your people! Stop allowing them to use US to bring US crashing back down. Be Blessed!
I respect that spike has his opinion, we are all entitled to them. i do however, agree with the others who say why is he bringing tyler down. I absolutely love TPs movies, I haven’t seen the most recent. I watch House of Payne but am not a huge fan of Meet the Browns, so I just don’t watch it. Everything that TP does has a message to it that is posative, I can’t always say the same for Spike Lee. They just have a differant sense of humor and it shows in there work.
man if u realli wana knw i think spike lee iz a f**kin hata…. i agree wit da ppl dat said he sholud b congradulatin anotha black man it aint 2 many of them dats gne show n tell u postive info dat everybodi can relate 2… i c if he was telln u 2 go hurt urself or sum one else bt he aint so i think spike lee need 2 gt his s**t 2gether n stop hatin on tyler perry…..
I am so proud of Tyler Perry!! He has found a way to put the God that I worship on tv and I for one am glad to see black people on tv talk about God openly. Comedy is just that comedy!! Tyler Perry isn’t setting out to make a drama tv show. He likes to heal people with comedy and you know what it works. Mr Spike Lee you contiue to make the serious movies you like and let Mr Tyler Perry make the comedies that he likes. Much respect to the both of you and my prayers will be with you.
What would Jesus Do? Right is right and wrong is wrong no matter how funny, real, or whatever point you try and get across. Are you in alignment with the word? Do you really believe that you can say and do certain things and still go to heaven? Is the money so good that you justify the wrong in it? Are you at peace without any guilt at the end of the day? Do you feel that it is right just because you got a good laugh from it? It is not for us to judge. You have to live and have peace within yourself. Not one person can go to heaven for someone else.
Oddly enough I was really thinking the same thing about Tyler Perry movies just recently. I won’t go so far as to call them minstrel shows but his movies do lack any kind of depth as far as I’m concerned. At this point in Tyler’s career, he should and does have the clout to make better and more serious movies. All his movies have the obligatory church scene, club scene and some veteran actor; I suppose for credibility with some speech in the movie about how we can do better. Don’t get me wrong, they are entertaining; but come on, we have rich and diverse past, present and future as a people. Madea has gotten old and worn out. As for House of Pain and Meet the Browns; my question is where is the funny. I’m not hating and have been a supported of Tyler’s from the get go. I just want to see more than what we are getting from him or I will no longer be a fan.
Well I did not like spikes movies they were boring and i think its a shame how he criticize Mr. Perry , give him his props and dont hate congratulate ! Having a black president haves nothing to do with Mr. Perry”s show , i guarentee you that the president and his family are enjoying Mr.Perry’s shows . Spike is trying to be in the spot light , nobody has forgotten who you are !
I respect Spike opinion also, but Tyler shows are funny. I love each and everyone of his shows. during the hard financial times that people are having they need comedy to keep them up lifted, not more of the same drama we see everyday in the streets. Don’t you think we are aware of our daily struggles and we do not need a reminder to harp on them. Most people perfer comedy over drama any day. So don’t get mad that he making that money by keeping us laughing why Spike want us to keep the hate and harp on the past the same as what he trying to claim Tyler is doing. Look in the mirror Spike and don’t hate and gone and congradulate Tyler !!!!!!!!!!
no, im not offened, im actually glad spike lee spoke the way he feels about tyler perry. I love tyler perry, he has created amazing stories about african americans and he has an audience, but come on people Madea Goes To Jail had a good storyline to it, but we can do better. I mean Spike has a point, the House Of Payne is like a modern day version of Good times, loud, black people acting stupid. Theres a black president in office, hopefully Tyler Perry will see that some of his stuff is just taking us back 30 years ago. Dont get me wrong i like Tyler Perry, but yes some of madea is sterotypical and all the cussing and shooting and going on gets a little bit annoying. I am a film minor, currently in college and i have always admired both Spike Lee and Tyler Perry, they have transformed the big screen. Both have kept hundreds of minority actors employed instead of unemployed, their stories are meaniful as well. But, Madea can sometimes send out a bad signal to white america, i mean this is a new day, no more sterotypical madea mess!! lol
If Spike were on top of his game he wouldn’t have time to speak about another producer/actor. Tyler is out shining alot of people in the film industry and striking nerves. Spike didn’t critize Martin Lawerence and Eddie Murphy who have both put on fat suits to portray women and got laughs….what’s the difference? jealous is such a powerful thing and Spike is jealous….ask Oprah the billionaire if Tyler is on top of his game and listen to her reply….Success recognize success…. Spike shame on you….Do the right thang and stop hatin’
Spike Lee is entitled to his opinion, and like it or not, there is some truth to what he is saying. It all depends on a person’s preference. I’ve seen Tyler Perry movies that I liked (Madea’s Family Reunion, Diary of a Mad Black Woman) and some I didn’t (Meet the Browns). However, I like the Meet the Browns sitcom, but don’t like House of Payne. I do, however, have issue with the fact that the ambitious, career women in Tyler’s movies are usually evil or selfish or not “taking care of home”. By the same token, I watched “Not Easily Broken” by Bishop Jakes, and I didn’t care for that either. It wasn’t a bad movie, but it just didn’t move me. We don’t have to like all movies that have black casts. That’s just not realistic. Let’s be honest, Tyler Perry’s productions are mostly for black Christians from the south, and if you don’t fit into that category, you may not relate to his material.
What people are not getting is that Perry has a mouth full of Lord Lord and at times show something different. Lawerence and Murphy are just who they are.
HI ,ALL I GOT TO SAY IS WHY ARE YOU{ SPIKE LEE HATIN ON MR. PERRY IS B/C YOU ARE IN A DIFFERENT ARENA THAN MR. PERRY. WHY CAN’T WE ALL GET ALONG, IS IT B/C HES MAKING MORE MONEY NOW THAN YOU USE TO BACK THEN. IN OTHER WORDS LEE WAS THE PAST AND PERRY IS THE FUTURE. BOTH OF THEM ARE GOOD IN DIFFERENT AREA. MR. LEE NEEDS TO STOP HATIN ON PERRY AND MR. PERRY NEEDS TO TEACH LEE HOW TO MAKE SOMEONE LAUGH INSTEAD OF BEING SO SERIOUS . LIFE IS TO SHORT FOR ALL THIS CRAP ABOUT STARS HATIN ON EACH OTHER . LETS WORRIED ABOUT THIS WAR AND THESE KIDS HAVING BABBIES AND KILLING THEM. WE NEED TO WORRY ABOUT KIDS GOING TO SCHOOL AND LET SOMEONE BULLIE THEM . WHERE ARE ALL OURS OLD BIG MOMMAS AT. THIS GENERATION IS JACK UP .
What the HELL is Interesting talking about? She or he obviously doesn’t know Spike’s body of work. You stated his films are “bafoonery’” Bafoonery doesn’t conotate into having different aspects of ghetto life in your movies. The term implies the overexagerration of ones speech and body language to imitate how Negroes are supposed to be in societies eyes: ignorant, lazy, non-articulate beings. If you are going to comment on something, have some sort of insight on the subject, instead typing before actually thinking.
There’s room for it all. Payne’s and the Brown’s are comedy. A black person can’t do comedy without being a fool anymore!
I am a huge fan of Tyler Perry and commend him for what he’s done for black entertainment. However, I completely agree with Spike Lee. The success of Meet the Browns & House of Payne is due not only to black audiences but other races as well. Is this the image we want portrayed of ourselves. We do have to do better. There is a way for black comedies to be funny without the buffoonery. We can be smart, clever, and witty. Look at Girlfriends and the The Game which was recently canceled b/c our people weren’t supporting those shows that presented us in a positive light. But Tyler Perry shows are top in ratings and Madea Goes to Jail is the best selling movie in Lionsgate history. What message is that sending to America. We are further encouraging the racial divide. Now I’m not just jumping on Mr Perry b/c he has made good films like Daddy’s Little Girls and Why Did I Get Married. We just have to do better in our representation and as a black people as a whole support those shows that show us in a real light.
It’s funny how noone never said anything about tyler perry when he came out with the plays everyone was like ” yes, we finally got someone talking baout whats going on the black house hold…” now everyone got something to say….this man had nothing and made these plays , movies , shows because we loved him…..well i still love him….i say let god judge him… spike lee jus needs to stop bacause he really ain’t that good of a film director to me…his movies ain’t all that…..i watch tyler perry over him anyday…..everyone was praising him about his work now everyone got something to say…..of course every episode isn’t going to be funny all the time but what show has been…jus let it goooo!!!!! he ain’t spike lee he tyler perry!!!
