St. Anna Needed A “Miracle” This Weekend
Published by Miki Turner on Sunday, September 28, 2008 at 11:42 pm.You don’t tug on Superman’s cape and you can’t insult a Hollywood legend and expect your movie to make money.
Spike Lee’s epic war drama “Miracle at St. Anna,” finished ninth in the weekend box office derby pulling in a dismal $3.5 million. Despite what some top critics said, “Miracle” is not a bad film but I suspect the backlash of Lee’s mid-summer war of words with superstar actor/director Clint Eastwood had something to do with “Miracle” not opening stronger.
Although Lee told “Access Hollywood” that the feud between he and the Oscar-winning director had been “squashed” with an assist from Steven Spielberg, Lee knows that people in this town have long memories. I’m not faulting Lee for speaking his mind, but he should have been mindful of the consequences.
Coming in No. 1 was the Shia LaBeouf crime thriller “Eagle Eye.” which relied much more on computer-generated explosives than the actual talents of the actors involved, including Rosario Dawson and Anthony Mackie. It made $29.2 million. Rounding out the top five were: “Nights in Rodanthe,” “Lakeview Terrace,” “Fireproof” and “Burn After Reading.” In it’s third week of release Tyler Perry’s “The Family That Preys” dropped to No. 10.
If you did see “St. Anna” over the weekend, did you enjoy it? If not, why didn’t you want to see it?

I saw St.Anna and it was an excellent movie. The reason they are called Buffalo soilders is because their hair texture feels or look like a buffalo’s hair. I was impressed with the actors and Spike Lee. Everyone did a wonderful job making this movie. Spike Lee or no one else should not speak their mind especially if it’s the truth just to not upset white america. We would have never ended slavery if that’s the case. African Americans contributed greated to the development of this country and it should be acknowledged. Because he questioned Clint Eastwoods integrity about something is not the reason his movie supposedly flopped. I think it didn’t do well at the box office because people are intersted in drama and unrealsitic stuff, not
Black history. It was a great movie overall.
i agree with you dawn my boyfriend and i wanted to see the movie but it was not playing in our area so if the movie is only in selected theaters you cant expect it to do well but we’re going to see it if it’s out where i live
I haven’t seen the movie, I hope it will be playing in my area. The small city in the south don’t keep Our(Black movies) for to long. I’m glad Spike switch it up for something for everybody to see. KEEP ur head up Spike, It will do the Right Thang,,,,,
I went to see Miracle At St. Anna and loved it. Sad to say, but true, Spike Lee has given me more education than my high school years. Hollywood has always controlled the money makers, thank God Spike has the gift of vision. So, in essence, he did come out on top. People, especially my race of people(africanamericans) really need to start supporting our very few directors. I’m not saying you have to like everything Spike puts out, but hey I happen to like the truth and love our history. Phyllis Montana-Leblanc
My son and I will be going to see this movie asap. I really appreciate Spike and all he has done to educate and help uplift black
consciousness. We need more people like him, people who are not afraid to speak the truth. If the movie doesn’t make another dime at least he knows we can’t expect anyone to tell our story, and had the heart to say I’ll do it myself, like we all should. I hope every black person in Seattle take time out to see this movie because most of them have forgotten they are black. Yeh I said it.
I went to see the movie yesterday and it was one of the best movie i have seen in years. History was on our side. I didn’t know too much about the buffalo soldiers role in ww 2 but I know now. Thanks Spike
WTF!!! Spike is as greatly appreciated as Clint Eastwood in the movie business, Spike should be able to speak his freakin mind about whatever he wants and how do you expect to gross alot of income with the movie and its only showing in certain places, that is bull. I bet Clint Eastwood movies aren’t showing in certain states, towns, cities whatever! how is BET going to say he shouldn’t have said what he said, when OTHER people say exactly what they want and its a big all out war hey the movie still plays everywhere, to hell with this story. Keep of the good work Spike and speak your mind, if you don’t speak for yourself who else will?
@Tracey…Spike doesn’t compare to Clint. Sorry.
I saw the movie Saturday and (of course) the theatre wasn’t packed at all even though it should have been. It was a great movie and as an African-American who teaches history I was glad to see our side depicted in a war movie which Hollywood never shows. Spike and the cast did an outstanding job. I wish more of our people were intersted in historical events instead of stereotypical fiction. Job Well done Spike!
I saw it this past Saturday and it was a great film. And I agree with Tracy, Spike is a grown man and he should be allowed to speak his mind. Would there have been a backlash if this was a white director going at it with Eastwood? Hell no.
I am so sorry that I didn’t get to see the movie this weekend. I knew that if this movie didn’t do well, then that would give white movie execs amo in thinking that black people aren’t interested in serious “non-Tyler Perry” type movies. Spike Lee is the truth and is the only black director who has stayed down with us over the years. I am getting out to see this movie ASAP and I urge all who haven’t seen it to do the same.
ps. I doubt the movie not doing well had anything to do with Clint. Spike is a grown man, with grown man opinions.
This comment is for Dexter- what does bigger names have to do with the movie, was it good or not. Did you mean that the movie needed better actors?
A magazine called “the Week”, October 31, page 17, said that Spike Lee had to appologize to ANGRY Italian Vetrans of WWII because he portayed a massacre that happened in the movie “because of a betrayal by a resistance fighter, WHICH WAS NOT THE CASE IN HISTORICAL FACT.” In other words Lee’s got the blacks heros being betrayed by the Italian Resistance fighters (who would of course be white). I am sooooo glad that the Italian COMPLAINED ABOUT THEIR UNFAIR HISTORICAL TREATMENT IN THE MOVIE.
