‘Transformers’ accused of racism

Uh-oh, well, I mentioned it yesterday in my review of the film, which is currently in theaters. In case you missed it, I stated, “Tyrese was great in the film, but his role is more like a cameo — he has no more than 20 minutes screen time. They also had some hip-hop talking twin robots that used bad grammar and words like ‘punk ass.’ Their slang was borderline offensive and they had more screen time than Tyrese. Is this the movie’s way of appealing to the African-American audience? I never knew that robots could shuck n’ jive…”
Looks like BET.com isn’t the only who thought this. The Huffington Post stated:
Harmless comic characters or racist robots? The buzz over the summer blockbuster “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” only grew Wednesday as some said two jive-talking Chevy characters were racial caricatures.
Skids and Mudflap, twin robots disguised as compact hatchbacks, constantly brawl and bicker in rap-inspired street slang. They’re forced to acknowledge that they can’t read. One has a gold tooth.
Legendary New York Times film critic Manohla Dargis:
There’s a serious disconnect in the movie between the image of power that those GM brands are meant to convey and the bankrupt car industry they now signify. That disconnect only deepens with the introduction of two new Autobot characters, the illiterate, bickering twins Skids (Tom Kenny) and Mudflap (Reno Wilson), both of which take the shape of Chevrolet concept cars. The characters have been given conspicuously cartoonish, so-called black voices that indicate that minstrelsy remains as much in fashion in Hollywood as when, well, Jar Jar Binks was set loose by George Lucas.
According to the Huffington Post, the director, Michael Bay, responded with this:
“It’s done in fun,” he said. “I don’t know if it’s stereotypes — they are robots, by the way. These are the voice actors. This is kind of the direction they were taking the characters and we went with it.”
Bay said the twins’ parts “were kind of written but not really written, so the voice actors is when we started to really kind of come up with their characters.”
Well, we all know Hollywood has a poor history of proper representation of African Americans. Jive talking twins, who can’t read and rock a gold tooth — Bay may not have realized that could be offensive, but it sure leaves an open door for criticism.
Are you offended by the voices of Skids and Mudflap?

THAT’S SO STUPID” WE ARE WORRYING ABOUT WHETHER CARTOON CHARACTERS ARE PERTRAYING US AS ILLITERATE, LIFE IS TO SHORT FOR THIS BULL—- SOME OF YOU ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT. WE NEED TO TALK ,DISCUSS AND FOCUS ON HOW TO STOP THE SPREAD OF AIDS IN OUR RACE,BECAUSE IT’S SENDING OUR PEOPLE TO AN UNNECESSARY NOBODY SEEMS TO COMPREHEND EARLY GRAVE.
GTFOH!
Why is it OK for “us” to shuck and jive and carry on? Why is it OK for rappers and BLACK comedians to perpetrate stereotypes? Why is it OK for black comedians to get on stage and pick on white people? Why is it OK for us to make fun of the way white people act?
Lastly, why is it racism when someone acts like “us”???
First, let’s not play dumb we are in a racist country. Secondly, ppl please learn the history and meaning behind the term racist. If you do then you know that to be a racist your words, perceptions and opinions of others have to have power over others to create a universal perception of others. When is the last time a Black, Latino/a, Asian, or Native person went around calling a White person a derogatory word and the next thing you know all white ppl are look at in that fashion?? NEVER! Thirdly, the truth syrum, please let me know since when did racism and power not go hand in hand? Informed ppl know that because of racism there is a divide in power…..so the “informed” that you speak of are the ones that are the most racist and have gained the most power. Fourthly, ppl need to stop acting as if they could not tell that those robots were not representing Black ppl. I see white ppl all the time using the slang language, but we know it does not sound the same and I am from Mississippi were most of the white ppl speak slang “naturally”. As a Black African-American that is very proud of her ancestry and of what my ppl have and will accomplish, it is upsetting that other Black African Americans are turning a blind eye to this. If you would like to be educated a little further about racism and movies I would suggest that you check out the Minority Reporters. They are two Black men that have taken mainstream Hollywood movies and made it clear as to how racism is still active and alive. Their site is…www.MINORITYREPORTER.com. Please check it out if you really want to be informed, acknowledgeable, and a sense of empowerment…….Also Crazy 89 before you start calling ppl “wannabe black panthers”, know the Black Panthers real history. As a granddaughter to one, they were some of the smartest ppl in the Black community b/c they understood more about the economy and politics then the majority of Black folks now!
I agree with Ron. I think that people in general are always trying to find some way to make everything about race. The robots weren’t meant to mock black people they were meant to be funny in no way did they mention they were black it was somebody assuming that they were black. It was a black person that immediately associating ignorance, slang and profanity with the black race. So instead of them accusing someone else of being racist they should look at themselves and get angry for being racist. Also as far as Tyrese not having enough time in the movie, get over yourself because he didn’t get a lot of screen time because the movie isn’t about him it’s called transformers not Tyrese Gibson. So of course the movie is focused on the transformers and the people who help them (Shia Labouf and Megan Fox)
I’m wondering why everyone is making a big deal about this??? Oh yeah, I forgot, the director is WHITE. See, as stated before, no one made any comments about Boys in the Hood, Meance to Society, Dance Flick, Little Man, and many others. I wonder if the director was BLACK would the same be said. I doubt it. We as african americans/blacks need to get over this type of stuff. That’s why our shows dont make it now on tv. We so sensitive and easy to call racism, no one of other races want to work with us. Plus, if we can make fun/rude roles/films for ourselves, why can’t other races. So, if you dont like it, I advise you to tell the african american/black directors, producers and actors to stop making these types of films/roles, then all other races will follow. Get smart people, stop continuing to get dumb.
I myself hav not seen the movie yet but i really agree with JAY and rj i mean cmon its a movie lighten up. And y worry about tyrese not gettin enough movie time he is makin his money and plus he knew he wasnt the BIG character he knew what role he was getting into so you guys just CHILL!!!!!! yea im black american
The movie was great and i have no idea why black people have to relate EVERYTHING to race. Tyrese isn’t a main character in the movie and he had a choice to say yes or no to the movie and obviously he wanted to act in it. The robots were CHARACTERS in the movie and that was it and they make the movie funny. Why is everybody saying that the robots are acting like black people? Why is every saying that they had “black voices” and didn’t know how to read and had a gold tooth? Stop bashing the movie because it is just that…A MOVIE! It means good entertainment and great laughs and I loved the movie! As a African American female who didn’t take offense to ANYTHING… and no other black person should.
Get a life.. you can look at any movie, event, circumstance and find a way to holler racism, if that is your goal and where your mind is at. I didn’t find it offensive at all. I enjoyed the whole movie. As a matter of fact my whole Black family loved the movie, and thought the twin autobots were funny as hell, but then again I was LOOKING for something to complain about either. Stop looking for a problem cause it’ doesn’t take much find or “create one. ” And by the way I only saw the movie once so far but if I remember correctly the voices kind of switch off from sounding like it was a black imitation to an new jersey italian or somethin- so it wasn’t really too consistently “black” maybe a hip hop imitation wld be closer.. matter of fact as i think about it more the green one didn’t sound black he did sound like he ws just east coast w/ slang..??
Come on people once we as minorities (Black Americans) realize what greatness we hold character like the twin robots and people dressed in painted black faces will not faze us. It’s our duty to change these stereotypes by not portraying them in real life. Once we stand up hold our heads high and walk the walk with the talk we can prove to the world that our peolpe built one of the greatest countries in the world with blood, sweat and tears….
With that being said I liked the movie a lot and I wasn’t offended because those character does not and will never represent me!!!!
I agree with you Mary 100%. And Miss Pearl when black people had to go through what they went through 400 years ago, in the 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s & even TODAY, yeah I think it’s OK if we talk or joke about white people but that’s different at the same time. There’s a difference between comedians joking about white people and racism in general. Believe me they at home calling us the N word all day & everyday, don’t get it twisted.
Correction to my above comment*** but then again i WASN’T looking for something to complain about.. and as i think about it even more than in my above comment: what does that say about ourselves that we hear some slang or hiphop lingo and determine the robots are black, then take offense.. in doing that, wouldn’t we be classifying or stereotyping ourselves? i could see if it was mentioned that these robots were black in the movie or by the producers or directors but we are drawing our own conclusions that they are based on their lingo.. makes u go hhhhmmm.. i agree wit Miss Pearls comment.. stop being so sensitive about dumb stuff.. make a big stink when it really matters.. or when we do complain about real issues it will fall on deaf ears (sort of similar to the boy who cried wolf)
I haven’t seen the movie but with names like Mudflap and Skids, coupled with the fact that they are Chevy’s, points to the age old stereotype of ‘Good ole’ Boy” White Trash. What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear “Chevy Camaro”? Billy D. Williams or Hillbilly, Bill Duke or Dukes of Hazard?
I haven’t seen the film, but second after thinking they meant to portray White Trash (I’m white, male, and I drive a Camaro, and I hear the jokes most everyday. So much so I have a standard reply which is “not just white trash, I am ‘The $#@*% in Camaro’”, referencing a Dead Milkmen song ‘Bitch’n Camaro’ which in actuality makes fun of it’s character’s elitist nature but unfortunately , most who reference it haven’t a clue to it’s true message. Oh the irony.) I wondered how they represented the Japanese, German, Italian, car brands? At all, stereotypically? I guess i will have to go see it today and find out.
The unfortunate truth may be that it Hollywood failed again when it comes to diversity and didn’t include a character representative of any aspect of cultures other than white male. Do you then demand that Hip Hop Culture, which is a major influence, both financially and culturally be represented, and if so who shapes what and how those images are portrayed. The majority of films pander to the lowest common denominator to reach the largest amount of consumers which yields the biggest return on investment. It isn’t about Black, White, Red, Yellow, or Brown, it is about THE ” GREEN”.
Well here we go again {BY THE WAY I’M A BLACK PERSON} thats why it hurts to be pictured the way they sometimes do that in Hollywood. I do think TY should have more line in the movie, thats the reason I went to go a see the movie. Yes the movie is storied around Sam I like Sam, but they have TY out there promoting the movie and the brother can’t even get aleast 30min of air time, where did he come from, remember at the end of the last movie they showed somewhat everyone going home being with there family, we would have like to see where TY went, how it affected his family. Now that might be a little to much but that would I would like to have seen. How can someone tell you haw to feel inthe inside. People have gone throught alot in life and thing like this burns them up in the inside. The movie was a little to long for me and I did’t really care for it. The story line was all wrong for me.
Let me explain this. The Autobots have been living amongst humans. The cars act and respond like their owners. Now anyone that dont have a clue about the Transformers need to start at the beginning with comic books and try to find the old TV show that my kids watched when they were little. Catch up then watch the grown up version of the movies with understanding
I am a college student and I have taken a couple of sociology classes on race, ethnicity and power. I feel that in America we do have a stratification system where some races have more resources available to them than others. I feel that as black people we should not ignore even the little comments that gives the black community a negative view. I feel we all need to realize that racism is still alive and well. At the same time I also feel that its not that simple to just to “look beyond race and realize that we our one” because we are not, no matter how much we want to be.
Prior to submitting this comment, I have yet seen this movie. However, you so-called “African-Americans” are collectively a bunch of whiners! I am darker than Wesley Snipes (for all those interested I was born in Canada- raised in California). Until you (afro-americans collectively) begin to take responsibilities for your own destiny, you will continue to determine your progress solely on black and white. Stupids, it Whitys’ movie. that means they can put anything that they want! if you want to create better movies where you are placed in a better light then do the following: 1stay out of whities prisons 2go school learn how to make movies video games…3create your own movie studios/movie distributions ie Tyler Perry.
Stop accepting stupid roles in movies. This is the only way you will get respect. there is more to your culture than hip hop and Basketball. “Yes you Can!
Bmarie…You live in the greatest nation on earth. As long as you and others on this page continue to have this self-defeating attitude, you will never amount to anything. if you truly felt helpless and hopeless, why would you choose to enrol in college? knowing that their is racism should motivate you to succeed! If you black americans would unite, help each other out, open more black businesses you will succeed.
My Baybiie TYRESE deserved more
You all are missing the mark. The movie shows how the Autobots were able to adapt to all aspects of their new surroundings. that includes the “Hip Hop Culture” and everything it contains. if you remember Jaz …his transformation was a break dance move he used slang and called people and other bots bitches. having what is labled as African American mannorisms (SP?) he was also the first Bot to die in the movie! Was that a stereotype also? We have to realize that characeristic no longer just fit us (african american). Watch the movie and enjoy it as a movie nothing more!
I bet if all the robots sounded the same, Black people will complain, saying: HOW COME THERE AINT NO BLACK ROBOTS!!!!!!!!!???
SmH, i seen plenty of white boys use slang and they sound black, nothings wrong with that.
Das like saying why are there no white starting cornerbacks in the NFL??
Yea im BlaCk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!,but i luv em all
p.s y cant we all just swagg and surf together?????lmao
