‘Transformers’ accused of racism

Uh-oh, well, I mentioned it yesterday in my review of the film, which is currently in theaters. In case you missed it, I stated, “Tyrese was great in the film, but his role is more like a cameo — he has no more than 20 minutes screen time. They also had some hip-hop talking twin robots that used bad grammar and words like ‘punk ass.’ Their slang was borderline offensive and they had more screen time than Tyrese. Is this the movie’s way of appealing to the African-American audience? I never knew that robots could shuck n’ jive…”
Looks like BET.com isn’t the only who thought this. The Huffington Post stated:
Harmless comic characters or racist robots? The buzz over the summer blockbuster “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” only grew Wednesday as some said two jive-talking Chevy characters were racial caricatures.
Skids and Mudflap, twin robots disguised as compact hatchbacks, constantly brawl and bicker in rap-inspired street slang. They’re forced to acknowledge that they can’t read. One has a gold tooth.
Legendary New York Times film critic Manohla Dargis:
There’s a serious disconnect in the movie between the image of power that those GM brands are meant to convey and the bankrupt car industry they now signify. That disconnect only deepens with the introduction of two new Autobot characters, the illiterate, bickering twins Skids (Tom Kenny) and Mudflap (Reno Wilson), both of which take the shape of Chevrolet concept cars. The characters have been given conspicuously cartoonish, so-called black voices that indicate that minstrelsy remains as much in fashion in Hollywood as when, well, Jar Jar Binks was set loose by George Lucas.
According to the Huffington Post, the director, Michael Bay, responded with this:
“It’s done in fun,” he said. “I don’t know if it’s stereotypes — they are robots, by the way. These are the voice actors. This is kind of the direction they were taking the characters and we went with it.”
Bay said the twins’ parts “were kind of written but not really written, so the voice actors is when we started to really kind of come up with their characters.”
Well, we all know Hollywood has a poor history of proper representation of African Americans. Jive talking twins, who can’t read and rock a gold tooth — Bay may not have realized that could be offensive, but it sure leaves an open door for criticism.
Are you offended by the voices of Skids and Mudflap?

All i have to say is ” we’ll never get over this rascism”. I actually liked the movie until i seen that part (as well). What’s the problem America? I wonder if it was the other way around would it be a problem? Black people will never be treated equal. Someone please prove me wrong!
stupid, first off how can robot be racist. so when hip hop started where they racist, or when anyone do something different is that racist. blacks need to stop saying everything is racist. we hold us down. Tyrese is not the main star it goes from the transformer who we want to see, so they are going to have more time to the sam, the girl then the white guy. so after all that then tyrese come in. so he should not be in ever min. an i think Blacks people asian, white, hispanic, and who ever wanted to see the transformer because of the transformer not because of white or black. the question is did u like it and if u did not ok dont look at it and if u do look. get over it and yourself. may god bless you
PS and if you want to know i am a BLACK AMERICAN.
lmao beside everything else I thought the 2 cussing robots was very, very funny and I hope there would be a Transformer4 and I’m a horror type person. and” RON ” well said, and for these ignorant minds STOP HATing!
I know when you blog you don’t necessarily have to use correct grammar but come on Ron. I had to read your comment three times to understand your point. First off, I don’t believe for a second you are black. African Americans never say ” I am a BLACK AMERICAN” we acknowledge ourselves as African American. Second, I don’t like for our people to play the race card if it isn’t necessarily called for. Tyrese wasn’t the main character of the movie, and we just have to accept that fact. Now for the robot thing, I could kinda see why they would think its funny. As much as we may hate to accept it, other cultures find ours (African American) to be interesting and in this case funny. Me personally, it takes a whole lot to get under my skin and I’m not offended by it. My people just needs to toughen their skin and TRY and accept the fact that situations like this is gonna continue to happen even though we may not like it.
Ok, first and most importantly, if you have watched the first transformers you would know that all the information they receive is from the world wide web. That includes their language. Why, because it was the best way to communicate with human beings. Meaning the twin robots probably picked up a couple of Hip Hop websites and uploaded the slag language to their mainframe. Is that racist? NO! BET didn’t say anything when Spawn came out and that he was African American and the fact that he had to DIE to be a super hero. So, why say something now? As far as Tyrese, he probably isn’t complaining because he probably know with that little 30min fame, he is going to get PAID.
P.S. Yes I’m An African American! We need to look beyond race and share our culture with others. We need to learn to leave the past and work with each other to better our future and our future generation!
OK, first of all the movie was derived from a comic which most of them have improper English. Second, Tyrese wasn’t the main character so get over him only having 20min of screen time. Third this does not depict racist, would you say hip-hop is racist for bringing the slang talk into our culture. No, it’s apart of black america, it is who we are some people are proud and others are not. Fourth, for all we know the twins could have been white trash (now is that racist). My point is when will we stop saying a movie is racist and say it was a good movie or not. Yes, they could have gone without the twins and their slang, but it would not have been as funny.
Ok…LOL! Seriously though, we know that there is basically racism in everything American, one way or the other. I think that it is important not to turn a blind eye when truth comes and manifests itself for what it is.
Yes, naming the two so-called “hip hop” robots in this movie “SKIDS” and “MUDFLAP” is in itself, racist. How many times have Black people living in the wilderness of North America, been called tarbaby, or black this or that? The names of the robots in and of itself are racist and ridiculous.
Also, we continuously become upset when White people are just being themselves and who they are. They will NEVER accept Black people as anything more or less than what they perceive, out of making us who we are today due to our sojourn in this country. Why do we keep trying to make them accept us, when our very nature as Black people is to accept and be righteous? Why do we keep trying to integrate with our open enemy and their children, when we are the mothers and fathers of civilization?
We should no longer be surprised to see such mischief-making. We should however, learn to love ourselves and unite ourselves and our resources to make a better world and environment for our people. Hell, if the world will follow Black people in our ignorance, just imagine how they will follow us in our righteousness!
Peace and Blessings, Family.
First off, I loved the Movie! and Yes I am Black! Secondly.. why is it we are calling the movie racist? Every black person who calls this movie racist, is in face a RACIST themselves! Why?
BECAUSE, what you are saying is that ONLY BLACK PEOPLE use the terms that are being Stated in the movie. , Lets dig deep in to the movie, look at the type of cars the twins where.. Would a BLACK man be driving those? come on people lighten the hell up! its only a MOVIE, and if you dont like it dont watch it. Better yet MAKE YOUR OWN! you want to diss this movie, but I bet your butts be glued to the tv when Boys in the Hood, Baby Boy, Menace II Society, comes on BET! Those movies use the sames terms but yest none of you have called them Racist!
Please read Jay’s comment. Again, the characters are robots. I am an african american male and I don’t think we would say this if the robots was speaking in a asian, arabic or southern tone. I think we are crying wolf on this one. Well can’t wait to see the movie this weekend. To this day I haven’t heard any bad review from my friends and family.
Be Safe Everyone!
I once was told give me a minute and I will find racism in anything. I am not sure how I feel about this, but it is sad that something like this can/does exist in 2009.

First of all i love the movie, and if you watch the first movie you would see that tyrese is a minor character, the story is not based around him so he not suppose to pick up all the screen time……..
Secondly I am a Black American and i find nothing offensive about this film….
i am in the music business part time -{ the so called stereotyped hip hop}- and i am doing my second year in med school, i dont speak with bad grammar i am doing my music and my career at the same time and i aint the only one doing that in the music business………………
I think black people should get over it when white folks make jokes on our expense we should be able to just laugh it off and if it was meant to be racist then they would really be hurt cause they would see that it dont get to us so to all BLACK PEOPLE OUT THERE GO AND SEE THE MOVIE AND IF YOU LIKE IT THEN DONT BE AFRAID TO LAUGH OUT LOUD AND LET THEM SEE THAT THEY DONT GET TO US!!!!!!!!!!!
I THINK ITS QUITE SAD THAT THE ONLY REASON SOME BLACK PEOPLE THINK THE MOVIE IS RACIST, IS BECAUSE THE ROBOTS ARE USING SLANG AND IMPROPER ENGLISH. IS THAT REALLY THE WAY WE WANT TO BE CLASSIFIED. AS IF WE ARE THE ONLY RACE WHOS’ SLANG INCLUDES BROKEN ENGLISH. PLEASE THERE IS PLENTY OF IGNORANCE TO GO AROUND. WE DONT CORNER THE MARKET. THERE IS SOME IGNORANCE IN EVERY CULTURE. PLEASE BLACK PEOPLE LETS STOP TAKING CREDIT FOR ALL THE IGNORANCE IN THE WORLD. HOW COME WE DONT ASSOCIATE GOOD DICTION WITH BEING BLACK. HELL WHEN MOST BLACK PEOPLE HEAR A BLACK PERSON SPEAKING WITH GOOD DICTION THEY SAY”OH THEY TALK LIKE THEIR WHITE”. SO EVERYBODY NEEDS TO CHILL OUT. EVERY NEGATIVE THING ISNT ABOUT US.
First and foremost i love the movie! i love shia and megan and i think they brought the story to life to the best of their ability and i loved IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
IF people would have watched the first movie before they jumped and criticized this one they would havenoticed that tyrese basically got the same amount of screen time because he is a minor actor in the film…you cant expect the entire movie to be based around him
Seconldy i am a black american and i am also in the well stereotyped hip hop industry { i produce songs, write songs, direct, and expected to perform soon} but that doesnt define me
I do not talk with bad grammar
And i am also doing my second year in med school………….. and i am not the only one in the music industry doing this you got lawyers and professors in the industry.
SO I THINK AS WELL EDUCATED BLACK PEOPLE WE SHOULD NOT GET OFFENSIVE TO THESE ACCUSATED RACIAL BEHAVIOURS IN THE FILM BUT HAVE A GOOD LAUGH OUT LOUD ABOUT IT AND IF IT WAS MEANT TO BE RACIAL THEN THOSE PEOPLE WOULD FEEL AWFUL KNOWING THAT IT DONT GET TO US!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Look everyone needs to stop being so sensative. I am Black and I thought the movie was great. and Tyrese is not the main character, if he didn’t like his role he would have never been in the sequel. There are many movies the make us look stupid and dummer than we are, such as Menace to Society, Boys in the Hood, etc and we love those movies. Ya need to calm down and just either like the movie or don’t and keep ur dumbass comments to yourself.
I am appalled by the former comments that suggests that we should “chill out”. Let’s not forget that the same character device was used in the first transformer movie. The movies goes out of their way ensure that the audience identifies some of the robots as “black”, shucking and jiving, hip hop caricatures. Those that do not know their history are doomed to repeat it! Our children are watching these racist films and ingesting these messages of inferiority subconsciously…what is there to chill about?
The main thing that irritated me was the fact that they (the robot twins) were ask if they could read, and they were like no. Now with them being portrayed as ‘black’ I was like come on now. Even if they were suppose to represent the hip-hop culture I know they could have atleast made the robots able to read. And I wasn’t upset at Tyrese not having air time. He isn’t a main character, and never has been. So that doesn’t really matter. I will say that I was glad that somebody brought this to our attention, because we have to be more aware of less blatant racism and defamation of Balck American’s character. It’s like boyz n the hood “why is there a liquor store on every corner in the hood?” This type of analyzing is much needed if we are going to advance as a people.
i never come to bet cuz it always slants everything to make white ppl look bad. every race has good and bad ppl. i’m mixed so i see both sides on issues like this and all this racism and reverse racism is foolish. informed ppl know the powers that really rule this world dont care about race they care about power. its okay that most of the people reading this dont know what im talkin about. stay misinformed if that allows u to sleep better at night. illuminati is in full affect
trm take your wannabe black panther ass somewhere else with that dumb stuff
well i am from st lucia and when they put it in that way its a very racial and i haven’t watch it yet i dont i will now.
