Yesterday I wrote that financial education should be mandatory in schools but like every other kind of learning, it has to start at home.
When my sons are with me, we play Monopoly so they can get used to handling large amounts of cash, making decisions about what to buy and to understand the value of owning and developing property. There’s also a rule that if I give them money, they have to spend a little of it and save a lot. I take them to the ATM machine with me and have them watch while I check the balances on their college savings accounts online.
A friend of mine sent me a link to this game, which she said she played and changed her opinion on money. I’m going to get it for my boys, I think and we’ll alternate it with Monopoly on game nights.
What are you doing, or are you planning to do to teach your children about money? How did your parents teach you?
Every month at my job we have what we call executive lunches where executives of the company talk about how they got in to the position they have. One person mentioned the importance of the very game you mentioned in this post (well at least the adult version). She said it has helped some people to get a new perspective on the rat race.

I printed check registers for my kids and I was the “bank”…we didn’t always stick with this concept or a regular allowance with them..however, Dave Ramsey says that one should have system of earning with our kids and teach them to give, save and spend…

My parents on the other hand, let me know that the nice house I grew up in and the clothes on my back were actually their’s and they were letting me borrow them. If I wanted my own stuff, I needed to work for it. Lol.
After playing the adult version of this game, it definitely changed my perspective on my finances and how to get out of the rat race. I would suggest to anyone who gets a chance to play the game — do it. It’s time well spent!
As far as my parents, they taught me to save and not to spend “every nickel and dime” that I get. We all know this concept is easier said than done. I’m not a parent, but everyone who has kids or knows someone with kids, should buy this game to give them a head start on financial literacy.
