Lay away is back!

Credit is so tight these days that people can’t borrow for those flat screen TVs anymore. So retailers like K-Mart are bringing layaway back from the dead.

You ever lay something away back in the day? I did — all kinds of things like games from the first Nintendo to clothes I wanted but ain’t have the cash for when I was in high school.

What’s the last thing you remember “laying away” and would you use it again now if you didn’t have the cash for something you wanted?

I love/loved layaway process. I hope it is coming back…. In the past I would “put up” my boys schools clothes and christmas gifts in the past. Since I have given up credit cards, it would help.

Talk about a blast from the past. . . I was just out of grad school during the recession of 1991, so money was really tight back then. As soon as I got my first fulltime reporting gig, I went straight to TJ Maxx in Gwinnett County (near Atlanta) where I put at least $200 of nonsense on layaway.

A pseudo-Indian inspired elephant-sequined vest, corduroy walking shorts (!) and a pair of purple silk pants are the only things I’ll admit to here.

Yes, layaway enabled my gift for dressing like an extra on the set of House Party III. . . eventually though, I stopped using it as credit came easier and my patience for waiting in layaway lines or dealing with ambivalent customer service grew thin.

We were just talking about good ole lay-a-way…our Pap-pap used to lay us some school clothes away every year. He’d come to the house with this big brown box…you remember that box Terell?

Walmart just did away with it just a couple years ago…

I love layaway. I would put my fall/winter clothes on layaway in the summer and by the time the clothes were paid off, it was time for the new season. So not only would I look good with my new clothes, but I’d save a lot of money, since I didn’t have to pay an interest rate. It definitely beats using a credit card.

I loved layaway mainly because it made it possible for me to buy more things for my children for birthdays and x-mas having to come up with a large sum of money is hard when u shop for a family five so i find myself not spending as much as i used to you know not everyone can afford to run up credit cards
