A bargain hunter by any other name…

I can’t stand when writers or marketers take corny words and try to make them sound cool just to support some trend that may or may not be there. In this instance, the NYTimes breaks down where the word “recessionista” came from (I could choke just from typing it), and how some companies are pimping the word to make it seem like it’s OK to spend money on crap during a recession, just so long as it’s not overpriced crap.

Let’s get real, people! There’s nothing new about people trying to shop for bargains and still look nice or have nice things. Why’s now any different, except for the fact that consumers are cutting back and now companies need a way to make them feel better about buying?

Would you buy a product just because it’s packaging says it’s a good value in tight times? Or are you always on the hunt for a bargain no matter what?

I think people have not fully let go of their “gotta have it now” mindset and these companies know it. They see in their sales that people are trying to cut back so I think this is just a new way to try and reel in people. And their money.

I’m always on the search for a bargain. But to me, a bargain is a deal on something I was going to buy anyway. A $100K car for 50% off isn’t a bargain if you have no business buying the car in the first place.

I’ll be the sole person to admit it: I get seduced by fancy packaging and labels. Though I’m aware of my fault, so many times I’m convinced to spend because I’m saving. I know this, and I still fall for it. But I think we have to remember, marketers and advertisers aren’t just hustlers. They have studied and mastered the art of getting folks like me to spend. They can literally think you out of your money. In my case, they outwit me more than I’d like to admit. But I’m working on it.

I just took a class about money it was called Finanial Peace by Dave Ramsey.
It talked about the differnt ways that marketers analize how we spend, take for instance Walmart. They use the hidden cameras for things other than people stealing. Walmart uses its cameras for watching the ways men and women work the store. Because men and women shop different marketers know this, they even set the store up for the most part so that you can get trapped altimitly getting you to purchace more.

For every fad, trend, crisis or natural disaster,(Katrina, Tsunami)there are catch phrases and tag lines invented that basically trivialize the event…you betcha. GAG. But really we’ve become addicted to consumption, running up our credit cards and becoming a nation of big ass debtors. Instead of looking for cheap crap, we need to stop buying any crap…. with money we dont have.
