LJ and Nandi, Christopher Street, NYC

During our weekend stroll around NYC (to check the stylish folks hanging on the gritty streets), we ran into LJ and Nandi. They are the definition of the black hipster; skinny jeans, fedoras, a fanny pack (talk about THROWBACK!), and some spotless kicks.  One thing to know about hipsters is that they often make thought-provoking statements in an attempt to change the world. See that sticker on LJ’s bag? It says “Vote”…look at that…thought-provoking and fly! Check out BET’s way to make voting fly again—YOU(th) VOTE!— and take a stand.  –sP

Yes, people part the streets when you come through with a fresh pair of Nike Dunks, but come correct with a style totally different, and heads will turn. We checked these kicks at a blowout in Harlem and we just couldn’t stop staring. The shape is classy, but the colors are poppin’! Nike’s are fire, but Swagger’s all about changing the style up. And with these kicks, Adidas is where it’s at. How often are you switchin’ it up? -sP

 Swagger’s not a style, it’s a LIFESTYLE. It’s not just about the threads you rock, but the art you love and the music you NEED.  Santogold falls into the ‘music you need’ category. She’s a musical genius that sounds a lot like M.I.A. but she hails from these shores (the US, that is).  ‘The Gold’ (we think that should be her nickname) is inspired by 1980’s pop music, which she says has “depth”… and damn are her beats CRAZY.  Turn the bass up and cause some controversy. She’s our girl and she should be yours too (Check our past ‘It’ Girls here and here). Swagger’s the ish. –sP

Now that it’s getting warmer, fresh kicks are steppin’ out on streets across the country.  Being that NYC is the SPOT for the sickest ones (we hear Tokyo’s coming up though!), we’ll be bringing you the hottest sneaks we come across throughout the summer.  First up, embroidered kicks. From flowers to, well, skeletons, these added touches will be what’s up this season.  Think about adding your own tag to sneakers, then you’ll KNOW no one else will have the same! Just don’t mess ‘em up…cuz a sharpie smear is just baaad news. Would you be caught with these kicks on? -sP

Chanel, Waikiki, Hawaii

When the Swagger team’s on vacation, it’s so hard to find peeps that have the NYC-look we love.  In Hawaii, we’ve decided that instead of checking for the skinny jeans, ill Nikes and bright colors we know so well, we’ll look for anyone island-fresh. Chanel looks real laid-back for the warm weather, but the hoodie makes her look with the cool design and funky colors.  An added bonus– she’s got that caramel-tan that makes anything look sweeeet. -sP

We stumbled upon this phat collage of tags 500 feet up in an old bunker on the mountainside of Hawaii…it’s sick. Just goes to show, no matter where you are, it feels good to express yourself with a can of paint and a canvas.  So, pick up a Krylon can and free your mind. Oh, and come to Hawaii, it’s heaven. -sP

 The Swagger team’s been tired of NYC lately so we took a little vacation to HAWAII…we know it’s a little bourgie, but hey.  Everywhere we go there’s some Rasta lovin’, from flags to reggae jams to sun and skank—the Rasta lifestyle’s THE TRUTH.  Here’s a beautiful Hawaiian, Julia, who we ran into backstage at a Katchafire reggae concert.  The Conquering Lion is fresh! Get up, stand up…we’ll be in Hawaii for the rest of the week, so if you know of any ill spots, hit us. You feelin’ the reggae style?? -sP

Damien, East Village, NYC

You know it’s ‘bout to be summer when the yacht-wear is, well, EVERYWHERE. Women wear short skirts and dudes try their hardest to be equally as casually cool and stylish.  Damien hits style on the head with his shorts/coat combo with stitched-on gold crests.  He’s clearly put-together, but makes it seem so easy.  We’re a fan of the aviators (still the style standard for the summer), but we’re not so big on the man-purse. But hey, sometimes there’s a lot to carry onto that Yacht… -sP

Eli, Ti and Tay, SoHo, NYC

Yo, people come out of the woodwork on weekends in NYC.  The streets were packed with folks… yet only a few were worthy of a Swagger shotout. Eli, Ti and Tay brought some freshness to their outfits with the colorful hats tipped to the side (like this dude), but the real standouts are the shades. Check the Kanye-inspired sunglasses on the right and the white-framed shades in the middle. Finally, the patchwork kicks are always a good call if you’re wearing a lot of colors…you’ll always match. -sP
