As We Mourn A Great Lawmaker, We Learn More About Brain Aneurysm Risks

Posted Aug. 21, 2008 – A tragic, tragic loss has befallen Congress. U.S. Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-Ohio), died yesterday after suffering a brain aneurysm. The five-term lawmaker was pronounced dead at 6:12 p.m. Wednesday, after suffering a brain hemorrhage caused when the aneurysm burst. It left Tubbs Jones, 58, with limited brain function, said Eileen Sheil, a spokeswoman for Cleveland Clinic, where Tubbs was treated after she collapsed behind the wheel of her car while driving in her hometown. Aneurysms can strike without warning, and affect more women than men, health research shows.
A brain (cerebral) aneurysm is a bulging, weak area in the wall of an artery that supplies blood to the brain, according to WebMd. In most cases, it has no symptoms and goes unnoticed. In rare cases, the brain aneurysm ruptures, releasing blood into the skull and causes a stroke. Depending on how bad the hemorrhage is, it can cause brain damage or death. Heredity can make some people more vulnerable to brain aneurysms, experts say. While high blood pressure and smoking increase your risk, surprisingly, being Black and a woman puts you at twice the risk.
Most brain aneurysms cause no symptoms and can only be found during tests for another, usually unrelated, condition. In other cases, an aneurysm that has not ruptured can cause problems when it presses on areas in the brain, in which case can cause severely painful headaches, blurred vision, changes in speech, and neck pain, depending on where the aneurysm is and how severe. If you have any of the symptoms or notice them in someone you know, doctors say you should see a medical professional right away.

I WAS IN A COMMA FOR 3 MONTHS, FEEDING TUBE, TRACH IN THE THROAT. SO I KNOW WHAT THE FAMILY IS GOING THRU I HAVE 2 BOYS IT WAS A NIGHTMARE FOR THEM, BUT GOD IS TRULY GOOD TO ME AND MY FAMILY. SO TO THE FAMILY KEEP YOUR HEAD UP AND SHE IS IN A BETTER PLACE NOW BECAUSE SHE DOSEN’T HAVE TO DEAL WITH THE PAIN AND MEMORY LOSS SHE MIGHT HAVE.

My condolences. But it upsets me that every time something happens, African American or African American Women are at risk. We do not catch everything and have all of these illnesses. That really is irritating and we a African Americans need to stop accepting what is said. I don’t believe it at all!

Hope, Love, and peace goes out to her son and other family members. She was a very great woman and i am glad that i had a chance to meet her. I hope the dream she was living will continue to be lived throught out the nation and let the world know that another one of our geat leaders dreams will arise!
I send her family my condolences, as my mother also suffered a brain aneurysm a few years ago, fortunately, she made it through. I have to admit it was very hard to see my mother in the condition she was in–but it was also a pleasure at the same time that my mother recovered & I thank the Lord everyday for that, because I thought I was losing my best friend & mentor. I pray for her family as I know this is an extremely difficult time for them.

R.I.P. I didn’t know that aneurysms affect black women more. My mom passed away in 2002 due to a brain aneurysm & she only went into the hospital for a hysterectomy. My prayers go out to her family, fans, & friends. It’s a VERY HARD thing to loose someone u care for. I agree with Tisha: a lot of deaths have happened this month.

I agree with tisha…Why is it always Black with the high risk. I won’t accept it. It anybody out there is listening…Notice…Everything is higher in African Americans. The Devil is a liar!!! Stop accepting that as Fact. God has the final say. “No Weapon Formed Against Me Shall Prosper!” I don’t doubt that we need to eat a certain way to cut down on certain illness…but My Goodness…Why is it always the African Americans the number one people of this or that?
