Teens Need To Get More Physical

obese Posted Sept. 12, 2008 – As I was walking home from the post office a half mile from my house, I encountered a group of teenagers walking in the opposite direction from the nearby high school, who caught my attention. The young women were thin, attractive and any one of them could have been a model, except that they had serious pot bellies.

Now, I’m not saying that twenty years ago or so there wouldn’t be an occasional teen like them at my school who was thin with a little pooch. It just would have been less likely, which makes this an obvious examples of what happens when administrators take sports, gym and other physical activities out of school and make it more difficult for kids to get any kind of physical workout other than for their texting fingers. When I was coming up in West Philly, we played hopscotch and double-dutch on the street, made our own skate boards, played stick ball and sled, and ran around like banshees. As teens, we played basketball, had pep squad and cheerleaders, and swam at the rec center. Or, we were in front of a friend’s house singing and dancing to the tunes of our favorite artists. These days, many urban schools don’t have sports teams, cheerleading, or stress activities like tennis, bowling or other physical sports. And some neighborhoods are too dangerous for kids to be on the street playing or go to the park. And, there’s no nearby rec center. The only walking todays teens do is at the mall, which is better than nothing.  After passing these young women on the street, I thought to myself  they are ticking timebombs, on their way to a life of diabetes, stroke or heart attack. The current sedentary state of young people begs for a solution. If it’s too expensive to add more in-school sports, how do we get more young people to get off their booties and do something physical? Everyone can’t get a Wii. A solution really is a matter of life or death – without one, we face a future where young people get sick sooner from old people’s diseases and die younger.

    My opinion, our children are now so envolved into the video game age, and all the electronics gadgets, that the parents now us them as baby sitting tools. in my day we went outside you know being boys, getting hurt, scars, riding bikes, playing basketball baseball etc. we were active, kids today rather sit in front of a video game and gain weight, antisocial, unless its about a game, and need Energy drinks to get through simple days. Then as they mature we have more Criminals because the want fast money, and dont understand the real work it takes to be successful, like one comedian said “they wanna be ballers over night”. being active is American, Or just human nature, Think about it.
