Mims On Freedom of Speech vs. Censorship
December 18th, 2007
I think that from an artist stand point, this is not really from a public view, I think that times change. Maybe five years ago, people would have accepted to put half-naked women in their video. I feel like for me, I feel like classy is what works for me. Right now, because I’m mature, I’m 26 years-old, I feel like if I put something in my videos that’s not classy, it doesn’t define me. Maybe that doesn’t work for every artist. For me, I think classy is in and because classy is in and I’m a classy person, that’s what I’m gonna depict in my videos, nothing but classy. And as I mature, I shouldn’t have to go back into being about naked videos or having half-naked women, or people doing things in the video they don’t wanna do. I just really think it’s based upon your maturity level. If you’re having fun in a pool, I don’t expect people to be in a pool in jeans. It’s a sensitive subject, everything has its catch 22. Everything has its pro and its con. I just think we know what the difference between a video like “Tip Drill” is and then any video that might have somebody just actually being in the pool or something like that. It’s not a negative comment towards “Tip Drill,” ’cause I think when they played the video, it was an appropriate time. I didn’t see that video on in the day time, I saw it in the night time. Do I think that that’s Nelly’s characteristic, no? This is a brother that I see that is respectful. He’s polite. Maybe his maturity level has grown from that time till now. And I think that’s the catch 22 of it.
I mean, it’s a battle cause you do have freedom of speech. You have the ability to get what’s off your chest and that’s what music is about, expressing yourself. But at the same time, I do think that sometimes we need to really kinda fall back on certain things we might be thinking we want to say. I feel that 100% you do have a responsibility, so that we can teach a positive message. I don’t think every song should be that way. And it’s a catch 22, cause how do we censor what the children get to listen to? I think that job lies on the parents. But, it also starts in the studio to where maybe instead of a certain word on a song, maybe I can pull back on that one song and say “you know what, let’s not use this word.” I feel like hip-hop artists do have a responsibility to watch what they say in regards to what children are listening to.

MIMS I wonder if you really comment on this blog anyway? But how mature is it to still use the N word in your music.I bet your grandparents and greatgrandparents wouldn’t approve of it but its all about acceptance I guess. You want to fit in and you want to be liked so you make yourself and your race look stupid for a couple c-notes.Like the homeboys and homegirls won’t still like you in WASH HEIGHTS. You can do better. And when you do you will see your fan base grow.

i cannot believe the montrocity of what other people are saying as comments. i am an english major 1st of all. where the F*** do yall get off talking hatred and some of yall cant even spell or even articulate what yall want to say in a clear thought. i just got a headache reading half of the ignorant comments. thats why Hip Hop is taking a severe beating. because we dont promote, education, finacial literacy, how to own and operate your own empire an or enterprise (and it dosent have to be with drugs or gangs either) and then you all get mad when white people use the N word. look at this blog. thats why were being called all sorts of names. you all think about that before you post any more comments on this one.
uhh Mr. Willie!
If you are going to cast those stones I would suggest that you leave the crib IMMEDIATELY! Those stones are going to boomerang and demolish your glass hut!
Before: montrocity
After: MONSTROCITY!
WHOOOOOSAAAAAHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hello! Good Site! Thanks you! mcontifiuizqdg
why is everyone hatin on mims? he is a respectable rapper who doesn’t limit himself to having half-naked girls in his video. i think that takes alot in the hip-hop world. and im not saying that all hip-hop videos have half-naked girls in them… im saying that as rappers, you shouldn’t have to limit yourself to that because you think that’s what you’re supposed to do. don’t be afraid to be different. i personally think mims has a point and i respect his opinion. don’t comment on his philosophy if all you have to say is negative things about him as a rapper.

It’s a shame that they do wrong and want to censor us. It never fails. The government has been doing illegal moves and surveilance programs on people for years like little lab mice and as soon as someone figures it out they want to censor them and destroy their life. They may break me financially but they will never break my spirit.
When are we going to talk about the positive things in our community. I wrote a poem reflecting the positve things of our leaders from the past and present.
If African American Speeches Did Not Exist
If African American Speeches did not exist.
Then the speech I have a dream
By Rev. Martin Luther King
Would not have become Americas civil rights theme
or
What Frederick Douglass stated
Which would have been a lost
Stand by those princple
Be true to them, On all occasions
In all places, Against all foes
at whatever cost
If African American Speeches did not exist
Booker T. Washington Could not insist
That the laws of changeless justice
Bind oppressor with oppressed
And close as sin and suffering joined
We march to fate abreast
or
Sojourner Truth Ain’t I a woman
Would not have been heard
nor Shirley Chisholm or Rosa Parks
Most eloquent famous words
If African American Speeches did not exist
The different cultures in the world, would not have met
Langston Hughes or Mary Mcleod Bethune,
WEB Du Bois, just to name a few
Thurgood Marshall against the Supreme Court Judges
And now Barack O’bama’s Speech
when he accepted the Democratic endorsement
If African American Speeches did not exist
Where would we be as a society
This poem could not even fit
Because this is an African American Speech
Through the art of poetry
With all the media coverage most black rappers / hop-hop people have (mostly on BET, VH-1) they should be PROMOTING, and uplifting african americans, not degrading us. For every negative rap / hip-hop song that comes out, I and my fellow african american, who are trying to present a positive image, have to WORK that much HARDER to dispell the negative stereotypes. America is NOT just black and white. Other races form opinions of african americans just by watching television. If there are black people on BET with their pants sagging, and jewerly hanging, other races go out into the community, and see the same things…it just reinforces their negative judgement of us.
If thats what it takes to sell records…cursing…using the N-word, then what do you expect?
I am so ashame to be walking with my friends (a coalition of different races and nationalities) and someone rides by (usually black) with the music blaring some degrading lyrics, or the constant use of the N-word.
Black people…we have evolved and are NOW integrated with the REST of society…stop hindering our progression with negative Rap.
1wThank’s.0v I compleatly agree with last post. sxd
