Paul Wall Says Hip-Hop Artists Need To Work Harder
February 18th, 2009After watching the Grammys, it was great to see Lil’ Wayne come home with awards. To see hip-hop win these awards, it’s a great thing. Hip-hop is the #1 form of entertainment. Every other form of entertainment takes something from hip-hop, whether it’s movies, sports, wrestling. Hip-hop just stays growing bigger and bigger. But in America, we take it for granted. Overseas, they study hip-hop and love hip-hop, and they know it like we know sports. In sports, we know the play by play, the scores of all the games, and that’s how these kids overseas know us here in hip-hop. They really study hip-hop, and that makes me feel like we take it for granted. To us, it’s just music and entertainment.
When I see hip-hop up there collaborating with all the other genres of music, I think it’s a little bit of a give and take. Everybody’s benefitting. When T.I. and Justin Timberlake perform together, I don’t think T.I. has to comprise who he is to do a song with a Justin Timberlake. I think it’s a hell of a song. And I think T.I. is gettin’ a lot of exposure to Justin Timberlake’s fans as well as Justin being exposed to T.I. fans. JT is stepping out of that bubblegum pop role. He’s a hip-hop artist. He’s hip-hop and R&B, not the same N’Sync artist anymore. In hip-hop, as a rapper, I’ve been on tours and been on the road with rappers, but when I went on the road with Fall Out Boy, it was a completely different working atmosphere. The way they handled their merch, you don’t see that on a lot of hip-hop tours. Like, when I went on tour with Tech 9, I learned a lot. As a whole, we need to step it up and get that merch money. Sometimes you have a hit song, but you got to cultivate those fans in order to turn hip-hop into a career. A lot of hip-hop artists get conceited and get a big head. When I was with Fall Out Boy, I saw how they really just cultivated their fans. We got to step it up with our merchandising. When’s the last time you went to a hip-hop show and you bought bobbleheads and Frisbees? I think when you out of sight, you out of mind. You gotta stay relevant in fan’s life. Even if you don’t have a song out. Snoop don’t have a song out right now, but he got one of the most watched shows on TV.
I think with hip-hop there’s so much stereotypes that we put out on ourselves. We have an image that we have to live up to. We should just go out and be ourselves and just try to grind and make it to the top, ’cause everybody is taking from hip-hop. When was the last time we had a president that listened to hip-hop?? I think sometimes friendly competition is good, but we get so caught up with competing with each other, we fail to realize this really ain’t a competition. In the end, that’s gonna lead to your downfall. You don’t sell records by being better than the next person. Some artists do feed off their competition and it helps them to become better. But me, personally, I don’t thrive off competition, that will distract me more than anything. My mind is on getting paid, putting out good music, and keeping my fans happy.

all you need is a hot track ,and you got a platium plauqe, these lames recite flows from each other and they come up off of that. What happened to the real talk now ricky ross is the boss ? what happen to integrity and honesty at all cost? back in the day we the toosie role and butterfly dance, but now they wanna walk it out and how you do the stanky leg? alot of talk about the same thang forseeable flows, girls, cars, chains, clothes, and bottles selling out shows. speak some real life situations like big and pac , eightball and MJG plus UGK now they hot. T.I. Jay-z and me is who can get my respect. cause we just tell it like it is and we simply the best. So if you bubble gum rapping might as well stack your wealth, cause once I hit the scene your carreer will be put on the shelf.
Who cares what this white boy thinks. He isn’t relevant anyway.
HIP-HOP is always being taken to a higher level. We as black folks, flow with the good times and hards times in our lives and express it in songs. What more do the artist need to work on? They take life as it comes to them and do their best to make the best of it. We as a people love Hip-Hop because we live Hip-Hop. I put together a shout-out song going out to all the people that make Hip-Hop. It’s called “Letz Get Down” by Msvegas check it out at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WsMAk1EuvSY

hip-hop is all good as long as who ever is rappin in rappin about real things this is what draws the fans all the show boatin and boostin your self up with lies or becoming a legend in your own mind is for all the posers. Why do you think 2-pac and Biggie are such a legend? (because they were real and when it’s real it’s forever!!!
well to be honest he don’t have any room to talk when his last hit (a long time ago) was TRASH…… so if its anything he need to work HARDER
Obviously HipHop is very influential and has been since the beginning. All this man sounds like he saying to me is take it back to those “PUBLIC ENEMY” times, when music had a message and the message wasn’t about getting bling and being king of punchlines or center of attention by beefing.
Hey Family,

I agree w/”Chucky”, “Real Rappers” are Underground. personally, i don’t mean like public enemy, biggy, or 2pac; that stuff was unfriendly & controversial. In my opinion real rap iis “bubblegum”, happy, unexplicit, artsy, friendly & non-commercial, etc. (& no not cool kids, kids n hall or kanye west), absolutely anything else is materialistic, selfish, & generic. & if u mostly disagree your most of the problem.
Paul wall, i’m sorry, but you are one the biggest jokes to hit the rap scene. Who the heck are you supposed to be?? I mean, you think that wearing stupid diamond chain (African Blood) around your neck that that identifies you black people? Even black people that dress like that, that doesn’t make them MORE black either. Hip-hop, truly, has nothing to do with the black “struggle”, actually, it increases the struggle.
As you said, you are only intersested in making albums\money and pleasing your fans, which, unfortanately for you, means more money. The money you have made off Rap music has been made off the destruction of young black minds.
hip hop has a predudice that restricts its growth some are rejected because there too clean others are not the material yet that somegun jammin the problem is fear of what their personal anxiety is of why theyll be rejected in their personal comparison of thier own thoughts and we just want the jam wall do jam by the way,hip hop has a predudice against too much difference even though they jam a bad noy phobia has a ruin but not ruined hip hop if they truly go by what the jam sho nuff is mc’s will work harder but they have their demandingclosed circle the comfortthey have make lac.
yeah. these guys do need to work harder. reason being im tired of hearing lil wayne on everything. im not knocking or nothing but come on guys. get it together. bring back punch lines. Jus because the song has a bangin beat doesnt make it fresh. the words should make the song, not the other way around. N North Carolina we listen to words. thats y we want jada back in greensboro. I get bucks like Milwakee cause like sam i can sell. Crazy. And b4 i leave take this into thought, grab a dictionary look up different words besides curse words. do it for the kids. Music should inspire………

I feel people have different opinion on wht hipop is. which is fine and i feel we focus to much time on blaming hip hop instead of trying to improve hip hop. we talk alot about who has done what and what you havent but its never on how to make things better i feel there are some things wrong with hip but there are also goods things i just feel we focused all the attention on whats wrong with hiphop instead of the good things everyone has a opion but everyone not going to always agree with that opinion thats why we live in america
