Last Friday the hip hop world got to see a different side of YMCMB standout Drake. The Grammy nominated rapper avoided the media hype and let his music speak for itself, releasing his new single “Started From The Bottom” via his O.V.O. blog site. Though it was reported that the Canadian wordsmith would premiere the single on Grammy night, Drizzy surprised fans with an early delivery accompanied with a personal note to fans.
In the letter, Drake explained.”I didn’t feel I needed any interviews or radio or press to launch this song. It felt right to come back to the site that I started on and release it to the people that started here with me.” Not since his humble beginnings on his 2009 So Far Gone mixtape has Drizzy introduced new music to his fans on O.V.O. So, it’s no surprise that this track is full of nostalgia.
“Started From the Bottom” is a personal recollection of Drake and his crew’s tedious journey to hip hop superstardom. The MC reflects his past, rapping:
“I done kept it real from the jump/ living at my momma’s house we’d argue every month/ I was trying to get it on my own/ working all night traffic on the way home/ Now my uncle calling me like where you at?/ I gave you the keys, told you to bring it right back/ I just think it’s funny how it goes/ now we on the road half a million for a show.”
Beyond looking back, the track is an ode to the naysayers that write Drake off as an overnight success. Drizzy’s hard work, and late nights in the studio have paid off but the lessons learned, he won’t soon forget. As he continues to use his past to fuel his success, he’ll continue to create music for his fans that is personal, impactful and relatable. Well done Aubrey.
