Frank Ocean Continues to Bring Same-Sex Love MainstreamDecember 4th, 2012
By Arielle Loren
Sunday night, Frank Ocean set the Internet on fire, posting a picture to his Instagram of another man embracing him from behind. The man, pictured with long brown hair, is rumored to be French model Willy Cartier, Ocean’s current boyfriend. Cartier has made additional appearances on Ocean’s Twitter feed with the hip hop star teasing a possible marriage.
“Marry em, make em American,” the singer tweeted on Sunday morning.
However, the picture looks very cinematic, leading fans to believe that the model has been cast in the next music video for Ocean’s album, channel ORANGE. The celeb has been playing coy about all of the attention, writing in response to the hoopla after he posted the photo, “Lol y’all are crazy. Remember, everyone goes to the grave. Let me live.”
After revealing last July that he fell in love with a man in an intimate public Tumblr letter, the singer continues to have his fans’ support. Arguably, his ability to be “out” as a same-sex-loving man symbolizes a shift in consciousness. Perhaps he will break ground as one of the few mainstream men in R&B music to openly love men and incorporate those intimate details into his music.
If Ocean is coupled with a male lead in his next music video, he will solidify himself as a LGBT trailblazer in the music industry. While he’s not the first black man to love a man, he is one of the few singers that have been fearless enough to sing about that love or, more boldly, exhibit romance toward a man in a music video.
At the very least, the songwriting crooner deserves a round of applause for his bravery and openness about his love life. Only time will tell if he’ll continue to share his love journeys with his fans, or be hugged up with a male lover in what would likely be one of the most talked about videos of 2013.
