Frank Ocean Makes Music by His Own Rules

Every so often, the music world encounters an exceptional talent that we just can’t ever seem to get enough of. Odd Future standout R&B crooner Frank Ocean appears to be the next über, but complex star who’s more focused on self-gratification than keeping up with the pressures for a constant supply of music. In a recent interview with The Guardian, the singer/songwriter inadvertently shed some light on his often reclusive behavior and what really drives his super talent.
“I don’t intend to stop making music. This isn’t a faux retirement,” Ocean told the UK paper. “But I do think it would be f——g legendary if I just made channel ORANGE last year, then put out a best-selling novel next year, then, you know, designed an arena in Stockholm in 2014!,” said Ocean. “You just do what you can and you have as much fun as possible, and love your life as much as you can despite the bulls–t and all the expectations and s–t. You just do what the f–k you want to do at the end of the day and don’t give a f–k.”
Preserving his creative appetite at all costs is certainly admirable, but many fans will be left out in the cold whenever Ocean has his day of musical reckoning. It’s more than likely that this is the same kind of rationale that consumes other great super talents like Andre 3000 and D’Angelo and cast them into the creative spaces beyond the view of the camera and public. While most stars get caught up on following up their latest, the “Bad Religion” singer’s hung up on not succumbing to the pressures of the business.
In fact, music fans shouldn’t be surprised if Ocean sporadically decides to explore another genre or field and take his genius elsewhere. Hopefully that day isn’t tomorrow but further off into the future than the OF crooner lets on. It’s highly doubtful that channel ORANGE will be Ocean’s last opus but it’s also clear that he’s not worried with any expectations or wishes other than his own. And, frankly put, that alone paired with his uncanny gift is what makes Mr. Ocean so revered. He’s irreplaceable and he knows it.
