Sound Off: Is Beyoncé Ready To Go Behind The Scenes?September 23rd, 2011
I believe it was Keri Hilson who once hinted in one of her less-than-memorable records that pop star Beyoncé Knowles should “pop out a baby and chill for a minute.” It was a thinly-veiled attack that she denied when pressed on the issue by the media. Nevertheless, Beyoncé is due to pop out a baby, but whether or not she’ll be chilling for a minute is still up for debate.
Even at the mid stages of her current pregnancy, the international superstar has been jet-setting around the world to promote several of her non-music endeavors. Bey is showing no signs of slowing down or taking a break from her hectic schedule. While some controversial blogs are now questioning Bey’s baby bump, the mother-to-be seems to be motivated by the love that’s growing deep inside her celebrity womb.
And for those who thought that a baby on the way was going to force Bey into a behind-the-scenes role, you were mistaken. With her latest album, 4, still on store shelves, the launch of her clothing line,, House of Dereon, in new markets, and a brand new fragrance, Pulse, Mrs. Shawn Carter is still clocking her regular hours in the office. Now comes word that Bey is interested developing a new label — and more impressingly — a new boy band.
The Grammy award-winning entertainer told The Associated Press that she is inspired by her male counterparts who have built lucrative entertainment companies.
“I see so many male artists building these empires and passing their knowledge on to other artists and development. I see myself doing the same thing and hopefully other younger artists when they grow up and they have been around for 15, 20 years, they can do the same thing.”
An admirable feat by the queen of pop music, however, if it weren’t for her new album floundering — compared to other projects, I’d pump my fists for her endeavor a little more. The direction of 4 was dubious, to say the least. While “Run The World” [Girls] (or whatever the hell you call it) was somewhat impressive, fans weren’t interested and everything that followed seemed a bit mismanaged — if managed at all.
Beyoncé is at the precipice of her career. If you haven’t heard or weren’t aware, the ring leader and some would argue marketing genius, Matthew Knowles, is no longer handling his daughter’s career. Though we don’t know exactly happened to force daddy’s little girl to give her old man the boot, it’s been rumored that Poppa Knowles had his hand in the money jar when he wasn’t supposed to. So, because of the split what we all witnessed this year, Beyoncé ventured out on her own for the first time and the results were suspect.
The arguable success of this album was strictly due to Bey’s built-in fan base. However, if you compare 4 to other projects, nobody really cared.
That said, I find it great that Beyoncé continues to swing for the fences when it comes to her brand. But if I was a singer, I’d need to see a lot more qualifications on her resume before I showed up for any audition. Because at the end of the day, history has shown that fame — unlike bullsh*t — does not roll downhill.
