SoundOff: Big Boi Arrested; Is Being a Freak a Crime?August 9th, 2011
Misfortune was the word of the day for hip-hop royalty Big Boi of Outkast. On Sunday, Aug. 7, one of the most funkadelic rappers in the game was popped for being in possession of Viagra, ecstasy and MDMA by Miami’s Customs and Border Protection.
Big Boi was booked at the Miami-Dade County jail at around 1:30 p.m. and has since been released on a $16,000 bond. Details of what transpired have yet to become clear; however, what is known is that Big, his musical better half Andre 3000 and family were all returning from a fun-filled trip on a cruise ship.
While I reached out without success to Big to obtain a quote on the developing charges, Antwan took to his Twitter page saying, “Shiiiit they said it was the Love Boat.” And his attorney also released the following statement: “While Big Boi was traveling with his group and friends, a small amount of contraband was found in the collective luggage. I am confident when the entire facts are aired Big Boi will be completely exonerated.”
Paraphernalia aside, am I the only one who views the aforementioned charges much to do about nothing? Antwan is a family man who was obviously enjoying some unmentionable activity with his private friends. Call me crazy, but a rapper–scratch that–a grown-ass man–who’s out with his family choosing to dabble in heightened sexual activity with his designated life partner seems more like a good time than an illegal act.
Will Big be forced to have an uncomfortable conversation with his young’uns about the birds and the bees (the freak version)? Sure. But should this cast a negative light over hip hop’s good guys? I don’t think so.
All I ask of you, Big, is next time make sure to rent your own yacht; then you can pop all the freak pills you want with ya peoples without trouble. Judging by the mug shot, fun times were had on the open seas. Some would argue the charge was worth it.
