The Mobb Deep Drama ContinuesJuly 30th, 2012
By: Dan Reagans
When the thrill is gone, it’s gone for good according to blues legend B.B. King, but in the case of the infamous Mobb Deep it looks like it’s the “trill” that may be gone forever. Since Prodigy’s return from a 3-year prison stint the Mobb has been on the fast track to rebuilding their buzz, but this latest turn of events may have set the duo back even further.
Upon P’s prison release his autobiography My Infamous Life: The Autobiography of Mobb Deep’s Prodigy, ruffled a few feathers because of its portrayal of a few rappers mainly his Queens cohorts Nas and Capone & Noreaga. Months later, after the debut of their Black Cocaine EP in October 2011, the pair ended up in headlines again–this time for the drama surrounding a series of harsh and explicit tweets from Havoc toward Prodigy. Then after months of denying that he was the true culprit behind those potentially career-ending allegations charged against Prodigy, saying his Twitter account had been “hi-jacked,” Hav finally came clean.
“I was speaking from a stand point of being mad, but still being truthful of how I felt – but it was just the wrong thing to do at that time. Mobb Deep is on hiatus, indefinitely, until things get hashed out. And eventually, the real story will come out”.
While it’s always good to have a clear conscience by finally setting the record straight months after trying hard to convince the public there wasn’t any trouble in paradise to begin with–finally acknowledging that there was/is an issue is just like crying wolf. Making Hav’s later statements seem disingenuous and Mobb Deep itself void of unity.
There’s plenty of BS you can sell in hip hop but a fake make-ups/reunions aren’t any of them. Just ask Game 50 Cent who once tried to settle their public dispute in 2006 with a truce that lasted only days.
Undoubtedly Mobb Deep has solidified a spot in the rap hall of fame, but any attempt to add on to that legacy musically has a good chance at falling on deaf ears. You don’t get that many chances at a comeback in this new mixtape driven game. The demand for music is at all time high and wasting valuable time squabbling can be detrimental to any rapper’s career health, even a legend. It’s survival of the fittest, pun intended.
