Why Is Everyone Attacking Nicki Minaj?November 29th, 2012
By Arielle Loren
Nicki Minaj is the new celebrity Jolly Rancher. Any celebrity that wants a boost in publicity can’t keep her name out his or her mouth. Former American Idol judge and Aerosmith star Steven Tyler has critiqued the rapper’s judging style on Idol, despite the fact that the show doesn’t even premiere until January. The half-retired Barbara Walters lazily reported that the Young Money celeb threatened Mariah Carey with guns, without even reaching out to the star for her side of the story. Mariah Carey continues to ride the Nicki train, painting the Pink Friday maven as crazy, loose and irrational.
While Minaj is a public figure, and thus, by journalistic rules, fair game for public criticism, she’s still human and clearly affected by all of this negative publicity that continues to show up at her figurative doorstep. She’s lashed out at Tyler, calling him racist, which caused him to re-address her and apologize. She responded to Barbara Walters, asking why she never contacted her for a statement, bringing up the double standard of treatment for stars that are in the hip hop industry versus strictly pop, like Jennifer Lopez. And, of course, she’s gone toe-to-toe with Mariah, revealing that she and the Butterfly celeb had squashed things, but that she continues to bring it up.
Will it ever stop? The drama, unnecessary commentary and opportunistic behavior are becoming too frequent toward the artist. She’s not a star on Love & Hip Hop or a reality show that thrives off controversy. She’s a judge on American Idol, where the focus should be on the contestants and music, with perhaps constructive criticism of her judging style. Simon Cowell wasn’t even attacked in the same capacity.
Fox Broadcasting entertainment chairman Keith Reilly says it’s just the world we live in, and feels that even the negative press will be good for the network in the end. That’s all fine and well, but attack after attack gets old. Love or hate her, Nicki doesn’t need to be the subject of almost every headline that has to do with American Idol, in a negative way. She’s certainly the most interesting judge due to her personality, artistry and style. However, she should feel celebrated for that, instead of having to snatch her name out of a bunch of celebs’ mouths.
