And I Quote: The Dream, Wale, Big Gipp, Pleasure P & Charlie Wilson
July 9th, 2009
VIBE Magazine goes out TOPLESS! First off, I would just like to send a HUGE thank you to the ENTIRE VIBE Magazine staff (old an new) for all their hard-work and dedication to the VIBE conglomerate over the years. It’s a shame to see one of music’s top publications hit the coffin, but that’s life, right?
For their last hoorah, VIBE Magazine went and snatched “it” couple of the moment, The-Dream & Christina Milian for their final cover, a cover which has already controversial commentary for its raunchy visual. VIBE’s Music Editor, Sean Fennessey dug deep into the fresh friskiness of The-Dream and Christina’s love to find out why, how and what makes their new found love work.
In addition, Sean & company shed some new light on R&B’s unmarked rising stars Kevin Cossom, Mr. Hudson, Wynter Gordon and several more. In these tidbits, you’ll discover what drives them, where their struggles initiated and where they’re headed.
Taking a slight turn, Chris Yuscavage jet sets to ATL for an intersting sit down with Gucci Mane while the big homey Brad Wete dissects the mind of D.C.’s leading hip-hopper, Wale. Finally, in a two part series (not sure if the second one is coming out since VIBE is now closed), Linda Hobbs treks down to the depths of Georgia to find out what REALLLY went down with the Dungeon Family if there’s still time for a reunion.
However, since it seems like I snatched the August issue a bit earlier than others, I’ve decided to revisit the eStreets of “And I Quote” for this specific issue. I mean it’s the last one, why not. The Dream talks R&B, Wale talks Kid Cudi & Drake, Big Gipp talks Jay-Z and Outkast and Pleasure P talks being snubbed of a “Best New Artist” nod at the 2009 BET Awards (cut it out). Check out the excerpts below.
The-Dream on the current state of R&B
“It’s like making a movie. And I’m not scared to make the horror film. R&B somehow tried to transform itself into hip-hop and make love look uncool. Nah, this is love, motherfuck*r, and there ain’t nothing wrong with that, you fuc*ing idiot. Don’t you love your mother?”
Wale on competing with Kid Cudi & Drake….
“They’re not necessarily my competition. We’re all doing the something different with our careers and our lives. Drake was more famous than I was. He’s a soap-opera star. And he’s light skinned,” Wale jokes. “You know the light skinned guy always gets the girl.”
Big Gipp on Jay-Z….
“I see it as a slap in the face when I see kids coming up praising Jay-Z and these other cats. Back in the day, they wouldn’t even talk to Southern rappers. Ludacris, Jeezy, T.I…….They praise Jay-Z, and to me, Jay-Z aint never said anything besides how to sell dope.”
Pleasure P on being snubbed for a “Best New Artist” nomination at the 2009 BET Awards….
“I got a No.1 single on the urban radio charts ["Boyfriend #2"] and I don’t have a nomination for BET’s, Best New Artist? That’s some baby back bullshit. I don’t even know what Kid Cudi looks like. Matter of fact I’m not even a new artist. When Justin Timberlake came out NSYNC, did they treat him like a new artist?”
Big Gipp on Outkast….
“I’m going to tell you the truth, I’m pissed off at Dre and Big for not really doing Outkast right now. Sometimes people trying to run away from something you can’t really run away from.”
Charlie Wilson on not getting his records played on the radio…….
“Radio programmers will say, ‘I can’t play a Charlie Wilson on my station’. But why? You want to hear [Jamie Foxx's] ‘Blame It’ all day? Hell, I love that record myself, but if don’t want to bring real R&B back to the forefront, what are you here for”.
And there you have it. Charlie wants real R&B, Wale’s hustle isn’t the same as Drake and Cudi’s, Big Gipp doesn’t give two sh*ts about how much dope Hova has sold, The Dream still has an undying love for R&B, & Pleasure P thinks BET is on that baby back BS (the hell is he talking about lol?).
For more goodies from VIBE’s August issue, scour the big apple, I’m sure you’ll find yourself a copy. IM OUT!
Sincerely

MJ would want this. “We are all wounded by this loss, MJ is a part of all of the hearing worlds life and many of the non-hearing, because what he did, he did so well, no one can truthfully say that they never saw anything at all by MJ that didn’t hold their attention. We now need the Jackson family to come together and be OUR family and give some of the creativity their whole family graced this world with. I don’t say this selfishly, but I say it because WE need you, all of you. Help us heal as we are all praying for you. Michael dedicated his life to entertaining and teaching us. He never gave up, from his candy store to his rehearsals at the Staples Center. Jackson family, hear me! You have the same DNA, the same spirit to entertain and teach, please reunite and continue his work; you know that’s what he would want. I know because he came to me in a dream and told me to publish this. I, like you, was sure that I am incapable of making anyone believe this, but he said: “Go ahead; what do you have to lose.” I don’t know if it was real, or just my subconscious, but I have to say this or I cannot rest. I’ll tell this dream to anyone that wants to hear it. http://www.LOST.videoDVD.info
