B.E.T. You Haven’t Heard This: Gucci Mane ft. Usher- Spotlight

Not. For. Me. It started back in August. I took a trip out to Mexico for a concert with several other media buddies of mine, two of which were apart of MTV’s “Brain Trust” crew (the conglomerate of minds who make up MTV’s, “Hottest Mc’s In The Game” list every year).
The discussion of who would make the list was floating around and I became extremely adamant about excluding Gucci from the list. Back then, I hadn’t recognized Gucci’s ability to kidnap everyone’s studio engineer so he could lay a verse on their songs. Now I praise him for those talents lol.
And not that his efforts were horrible, I just never wrapped my finger around how ol boy did it. Nonetheless, I was thoroughly impressed. Be that as it may, I still didn’t think he deserved a spot on the coveted list.
Weeks went by a Gucci Mane’s scruffy vocal chords were popping up like cases of the Swine Flu. I was afraid. I was very afraid. But again, I couldn’t help but rock with the Georgia native.
His past features were catching my attention (”Gucci Bandanna” w/ Soulja Boy, “Make The Tray Say Aye” w/ OJ Da Juiceman) his present contributions were holding court in my iTouch (“Lol Smiley Face” w/Trey Songz and Soulja Boy, “Break Up” w/Mario and Sean Garrett, “Wasted” w/Twista & OJ Da Juiceman) and as crazy as it seems, I was eager to hear the future ones (”Up In Ya Heart” w/Sean Garrett, “Get It In” w/Omarion, “Smooches” with Yung Joc). Yes I’m aware I missed some, but you get my drift.
I regressed my negative chatter and got on board with Gucci and his ad-libs. I chanted out “Burr” when it was cold. I yelled out “Well Dayum” when I saw a cutey patootey strutting her stuff in front of me. He ruled radio. His mixtapes were moving like hot Chipotle burritos. His presence was FELT.
But then the inevitable happened- the first single TANKED. Relax, relax…Gucci is still going to kill the airwaves- just not with this single.
See when you listen to “Spotlight”, three things are going to occur- I can assure you. A.) The beat is going to make you heave ur lunch (sorry Polow, you’ve created better. B.) Usher’s attempt to remain relevant again will annoy you to the 10th power. C.) The overall look for the song is extremely cheesy which will overpower you stronger than a cold winter Chicago morning, BURR (See what I did there?).
I’d be a hater if I didn’t wanna see Gucci succeed, so please don’t assume that’s where I’m going with this. I just believe throughout this entire time, Gucci has stood firm in his “trap” and catapulted directly past a bunch of our favorite artists.
That’s not say his reign is protected, but I think the core demographic that’s requested him on EVERY radio station will get a sniff of “Spotlight” and yell “FLAGRANT FOUL- TO MUCH MAINSTREAM ON THE FIELD”.
Alright, I’ve done enough chatting. I’m not a fan of “Spotlight”, but I’m still a fan of the Gooch (Whad up, @paulcantor?). Maybe I’m being to hard on Radric, but then again, there are toooooo many “Yes Men and Yes Women” in this industry so I believe my opinion deserves a slot SOMEWHERE!

Gucci has a well balanced blend of streets, drugs, comedy, slang, jewlery, flows, beats, street cred and an online presence. I’m still playing Murder Was the Case.
