Big Tigger Talks Busta Rhymes Collaboration
June 10th, 2009
Big Tigger reveals the saga behind Busta Rhymes’ “If You Don’t Know Now You Know”. If you’re familiar with Busta Rhymes’ “Back On My Bullsh*t” project, then you’re probably in tune with Busta & Tigger’s back and forth collabo, “If You Don’t Know Now You Know”. I remember hearing the song last year when Busta stopped by the BET offices to play the BOMB project for us, which might I add is a completely different project due to several key leaks (no fault of my own).
During the session, Busta was specifically excited about the song because it revealed, in detail, the BS he’s endured over the past 18 months. Since then, Big Tigger has yet to speak on the track, until now. I sat down with Tigger last week to discuss exactly how the track came about. Enjoy!
Big Tigger on the creation of “If You Don’t Know Now You Know”……
“Well I came up for the concept for the song “If You Don’t I Know Now You Know” I told Busta about it bout 2yrs ago. About a year ago Busta wakes me up at 2 in the morning like “Yo we need to do the song” and I’m like “What song?” He’s like, “The song you told me about”. So now I’m waking up and he’s like “Yo, I’m done with my album but I don’t really have that joint. I need a concept record. Nobody really does concepts anymore”. So the basic concept of the song, if you haven’t heard it you need to go get Back On My BS, is as I’m interviewing Busta I’m rhyming the questions and he’s rhyming the answers. So I asked him if there was anything he didn’t want me to ask, anything I shouldn’t talk about and he said “Nah, go in and let me be the one to pull you back”. So I had my producer Chris Marles from my radio show write me out a bunch of questions and I put some of them in rhyme format for him. After I sent the questions, Busta said, “Yo I’m going to send you the track, you can’t let nobody hear to the track” “Why Busta?” I asked, “Dr. Dre did the track”. So I get the track and it’s crazy. I write the whole joint out and I even wrote some of Busta’s answers- like the back and forth conversational part. Then there’s a phone call from two ladies which was actually done by Alicia Renee. Shout out Alicia Rene aka AR15, that’s her rap name now. So I wrote 75% of the record, sent it back to him and he loved it. He filled in his spots, sent it back and I touched it up a little bit. We just shot a video for it the other day. I wish I could show it to you but it’s not my project so it’ll come to light whenever Busta says so.”
Well well well, would you look at that. Big Tigger was the mastermind on one of the best records on Busta’s B.O.M.B. Not that it’s hard to believe because Tigger was always somewhat of a talented lyricist, but damn, 75%?? Sheeeeesh!
Sincerely
