EME Awards Day 2: Vybz Checks Out, India Arie and Gramps Morgan, Usain “Holt”
February 19th, 2010Why is it that anytime you make plans, it rarely ever goes “according to” plans? The “plan” was to meet up with Brenton at our hotel, then shoot over to the studio to finish up the footage with Vybz getting ready for the EME awards. Something told me this would not occur, as I watched the clock strike 3 p.m., while downing my piña colada at the hotel pool deck.

Perhaps, it was the fact that we were supposed to be shooting Vybz in his studio at 3 p.m. Roar. A little after checking out the final preparations for the show, which was about 2 ½ hours later, Brenton finally made it to the hotel and explained that he’d been held up with other gigs in Ocho Rios, which if you don’t know is a good distance away from Kingston.

Stage preparations are finally complete for the 2010 EME Awards.

All these seats will be filled in just a few short hours.
By the time we got to Vybz, it was approximately one hour until the start of the EME awards. The “teacha,” as Vybz followers refer to him, ignored our apologies, not to mention, our calls. We ended up waiting for 30 minutes with no luck. Tammy was visibly/quite vocally upset, I was highly annoyed and Brenton was apologetic. After leaving with no footage, we arrived at the hotel and decided to meet back up around 7ish for the EME’s red carpet.
On the red carpet, Tammy warped into BET.com reporter mode, I switched on blogger mode. Then we both got to work.

Cecile proves why she's the rightful recipient for the EME's Best Dressed Award.
I ran into reggae stars like Elephant Man, Cecile and Etana, as well as random good-looking Jamaican people like Julian and producer Conroy Forte. And for the fellas, Tamia and Danielle.

Guest Julian combines the casual and the cool.

Producer Conroy Forte suits up well.

Guest Tamia brings a touch of elegance to the EME's.

At first glance I thought guest Danielle was a pageant contestant. No, that's just how she rolls.
The Pegasus Gardens was packed with guests and stars alike mingling, drinking and just having a grand time. Day 2, T. U. Shortly after 8 p.m., the EME’s began. Six hours later the awards came to a close. No bull. Even though there was rarely a dull moment, I’m pretty sure it could have been chopped down to three hours. Just sayin’. Day 2- E, G, H, I, J, Q, S

Foxy and Mission of MBC (Make Boys Cry).

Zahra Redwood, Miss Jamaica 2007, poses with Video of the Year (Feels So Good) winner, Barbee.

This outfit screamed Rihanna to me.

EME Nominee and Winner Cherine Anderson alongside 2010 EME models on the red carpet.

LA Lewis, his toy rifle prop and friends.

Richie Spice keeps it irie.
Some highlights of the show: Lisa Hype’s, recipient of Best New Artist (Female) award, acceptance speech where she bigged up the nameless dude who paid her light bill and paid to get her hair done for the award show that night. (In case you’re wondering, she does indeed have a song about guys paying her light bill.) India Arie’s performance of “Therapy” with “friend” Gramps Morgan of Morgan Heritage, where the first lyrics that came out of her mouth were the words, “I forgot the words.” Really, India? Yes, really.

India Arie belts out her hit single “Ready for Love” to much fanfare.
Luckily, Gramps jogged her memory and she was able to complete the song without further embarrassment.

Gramps Morgan, of Morgan Heritage, poses backstage with his EME award for Album of the Year for 2 Sides of My Heart Vol 1.
She also managed to make up for the snafu with a stirring solo performance of her hit single “Ready for Love.” I swear I saw someone wiping away tears in the audience. (The Lowdown: After performing two more songs together, replete with harmonies and locked gazes, Gramps and India exited stage right… hand-in-hand…Yah.) Ding Dong and his crew, Ravers Clavers, won an award for collaboration of the year, “Holiday,” which got damn near the whole crowd off their feet dancing in unison.

Ding Dong and his dance crew, Ravers Clavers, are always color coordinated.
Real life couple Tami Chynn and Wayne Marshall performed a cute duet on stage, and ended it off with a nice long smooch. Lastly, all the well-dressed and sexy people on-hand for the EME’s really made this year’s show a sight to behold!

Rhinestone toenail accessories at the EME's.

Tarrus Riley's mother, who happened to be sitting next to me, accepted an EME award on her son's behalf.

Marion Hall aka Lady Saw performs “I Am Woman.”
The Lowlights: Awkward silences during some portions of the show. Vybz and crew skipping out before closing out the EME’s with the last performance of the night. Again, the six hour-long show! (When you have award-winning female artists (Spice) taking their shoes off immediately following the end of a show, it’s probably the clearest indication that it needs to be cut down just a tad.)

Spice, one-half of “Romping Shop” duo, classes it up with a bit of old school glam.
After the show was the after party. But in this case, the show ran way too long, so there was no after party. Instead Tammy and I opted to head to Club Fiction, after running into NY C DJs, Jagga B and Steelie Bashment, who suggested we check it out. We changed into more comfy dresses and dashed to the club.

Clubgoers bust di dance at Club Fiction.
Who do we run into when we get there? Hint: Another well-known Jamaican celeb. This time, however, the reception was less than welcoming. Usain Bolt, yes the Olympic track star, was in the club with his one bouncer. (By the way, we heard from a nameless birdie that he actually said he wouldn’t be “available” to present at the EME’s earlier in the evening, yet here he was partying it up at Club Fiction. Word Usain?) But that’s not even the worst of it. He straight up dissed us to talk to a girl in the club, who ended up cuing Jay and leaving with the next one. Eventually, I managed to get one pic ONLY after thoroughly explaining we DIDN’T want an interview. Smh.

There goes Usain Bolt inna the club.
I took a few more club candids. Afterward, we left a little before the let-out to head back to Pegasus for some much needed rest.

I guess he likes being the center of attention.

Dreads and hi-tops, a true rudeboy's style.
