Erykah Badu Takes A Shot at Gwen Stefani

Never one to hold back her tongue, Erykah Badu made a snappy little joke in a Wired magazine interview that took a stab at rocker Gwen Stefani. In response to a question about her upcoming album (Badu is reportedly release two more in ‘08), the eclectic songstress was mums, stating “I don’t want to introduce too much of it right now. I don’t want Gwen Stefani stealing my sh*t.” Ouch.

According to the interview, Badu plans on following up her February release with two more albums, Return of the Ankh, and Lowdown Loretta Brown. The first set for release in July and the second in the fall.

P.S.
Something tells me that Erykah Badu has sold like 100,0000 times more albums than the pathetic haters talking trash about her here on BET.com
Get up, get out and DO something rather than sitting around waiting to dump on the actual efforts of others.

What Said on

I don’t think it was an insult. She was giving her props to Gwen and they are probably friends. Eryka is the bomb and her music is great. She is original and no matter her clothing or whatever, she makes good music and she is a SINGER and a PERFORMER. She knows her stuff. I don’t think it was an insult.

lynette Said on

No, the remark wasn’t petty, because Erykah knows what she’s taling about and she’s not one to put her foot in her mouth if you’ve listen to all of Gwens music then you would know what she’s talking about and as far as Gwen selling mor CD’s than Erykah so what!! Erykah is a deep sista that puts out real music the kind that you can listen to ten years down the road and say that’s some deep Sh!t..

justice Said on

That’s why you all pay attention to her. She has her own style, and as uaual when your different
and not doing everything everybody else is doing
somebodys going to hate. SAD

Matt Said on

I went to an erykah badu concert just this weekend and she aint got nothing to worry about. erykah has never been one worried about album sales and tells the truth on whatever she speaks. She is a true talent and people who are hating need to go to a concert because they will eat their words.

simmy Said on

first of all erykah don’t have to take any swipes at gwen, i agree with mee it’s just the media blowing things up. and besides she has her own fan base that supports her in what ever she makes.

stop hatting people

barbara Said on

even if she was joking
she shouldnt have said it
thats how crappy stints like these
get attention
then again maybe she needs the attention
in order to promote her album
besides she made it sound like gwen stefanie
stole someone songs or lyrics
we love gwen

fizzle Said on

i think yall better call tyrone….. callem..
erykah badu

HLS Said on

Mee…..Nope, I checked Wikipedia…Gwen has sold more CDs (including when she fronted “No Doubt”)than Erykah so I guess I’m not a hater…just correct. You also have to remember Gwen has a more general fan base, whereas Erykah does not.

If you’re a true Eryka Badu fan then you understand her and her music. If you took the time to listen to her music instead of calling it crap right off the bat you’d know that she’s saying something that has meaning and a purpose for black people. Maybe somone did “bite” her ideas, music, songs in the past – who knows! Lauryn Hill feels other female stars have copied her style. Whatever! Eryka has nothing to worry about. She’s talented enough to keep making good music even if some narrow-minded folks don’t get it. Keep doing your thing Ms. Badu, I’m a fan who will continue to buy your music and listen to what you are saying!!!!!

JAMES Said on

MS. BADU I THINK YOU ARE VERY TALENTED AND HAVE ALWAYS PUT OUT GROUNG BREAKING JOINTS. KEEP DOING IT BLACK LADY. HONEY YOU SO SWEET!!
GWEN DON’T HAVE ANY THANG ON YOU!

naja Said on

Eryka Badu keep doing what your’e doing. I love your music. Those other people what give you a bad comment. They are jealous of you…. If Gwen wasn’t white she wouldn’t be on top.

Nicole Said on

I like Erykah Badu but I think it is overkill to release three albums in one year.

TYPTOda-macrophonoholic Said on

Both women are cool,BUT,maybe, just MAYBE she has her reasons. ERYKAH so abstract, eclectic, and comfortable in her own skin that a “gwen stephani” could NEVER be who she “WAS”!

khadeidra Said on

Erykha just 2 be asking are u jealous of gwen stefani because i don’t like that u is talking about her cause gwen stefani is a great singer and don’t get mad at me i’m just 2 get 2 know the truth so if u get this letter pleas write back 2 me.

Pierre Said on

I don’t even think that Erykah Badu was dissing her, I think she was actually giving her props, but if she was trying to diss her, forget a gwen stefani

Adrian Said on

Now…I know Erykah Badu…but is this gwen stephani?

Erykah Badu…is super tight on the mic….period…

honeyb. Said on

maybe it wasn’t an insult towards Gwen, but if it was I mean Erykah cool and has really good music but maybe she know gwen could take it and blow it way up and make it sell alot more than she ever could! Truth hurts but Erykah don’t hate, both yall cool infact maybe you should get on that Eve sh*t and yall collaborate and come out with a hot track. I’m just sayin..

Dawn Said on

I don’t know what the comment was about! I love
Erykah Badu music and her own style. I also have
Gwen Stefani album, it was pretty good. Gwen is
more mainstream that’s why she would get more public popularity.

KDilla Said on

LOL. It’s funny to me to see how people on here get offended when they voice their opinions, but none of them work for either Gwen nor Erykah, so they’re not getting paid! LOL

So, let’s look at it this way:

Anyone that knows ANYTHING bout’ E. Badu knows that you have to dig deeper than face value to get the true essence of what she says. Has anyone actually read the FULL ARTICLE in question?
And the fact Gwen has more sales is really pointless trivia. It’s just even more evidence of how radio and media are trained & told to NOT push REAL MUSIC but instead promote this bubble-gum, recycled, “just add water” crap.

With the new technologies, you can have 1,000 people with an album, but only 500 (OR LESS)actually bought the album, which means only those 500 qualify to be counted in the “Soundscan” totals for units sold. That being said, I don’t think it’s accurate to try to number a fan base solely off of the units sold/scanned.

No doubt, because of her style/genre of music, E. Badu probably has way more fans (underground and otherwise) than what Soundscan would have us believe. So, it could very well be a situation where Gwen has sold more units at the retail level, but E. Badu has a broader fan base.
