Mid Rap Crisis: Do Sales Decline Once Rappers Hit 30?

December 6th, 2007

Is 30 really the new 20? Not likely. At least not when record sales are concerned. Some of rap’s biggest stars have historically reached their commercial zenith shy of their 30th birthday. Eminem (The Marshall Matters LP) and 50 Cent (Get Rich Or Die Trying) were both 28 when they respectively sold 10.1 and 8 million units. Meanwhile, a 29-year-old Jay-Z sold 5.3 million copies of In My Lifetime Vol. 2: Hard Knock Life. Sure, there are exceptions. Kanye West, who turned 30 earlier this year, sold nearly 1 million copies of Graduation in a decaying climate. Common, who struggled with sales in his 20s, is now putting up career high numbers in his 30s. Still, records show that rappers historically hit soundscan slumps at some point after hitting the big 3-0. We’ve pulled records from ten prominent rappers, including Jay-Z, Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes, Nas and others to prove our point. Rappers…when you turn 30 you really need to go sit your azz down somewhere; dress like a grown man; pull your pants up; lose the ball caps, hoodies, fake bling, ring tones, sneakers and learn how to speak in complete coherent sentences.

I so agree. I’d give them until 32, especially if they’ve accomplished everything they’ve set out too. After that, it should be a wrap, not another rap! lol. Sit back, spend time with your kids that you haven’t seen since they were born cause you were out on tour for the first twelve years of their live’s(or at least that was the excuse)and grow old gracefully.

WHY IS IT WHEN AN RAPPER GET AN CERTAIN AGE(OVER 30)THAT THEY NEED TO RETIRE?EXPLAIN THAT TO ME.THAT’S LIKE A R&B ARTIST NEED TO RETIRE AFTER THEY HIT 30 AND OVER.GRANT IT,THEY DO NEED TO DRESS RESPECTIVELY THEIR AGE,BUT IF THEY STILL HAVE THEIR LYRICAL SKILLS,THEY DON’T NEED TO RETIRE.

Attention: LL Cool J you’re like 45 go park it somewhere. Also please find a stylist who is experienced at dressing a grown man. You’re WAY TOO OLD to still be dressing the way you do. Despite your nice body you’ve become that old guy in the club who dresses way too young for his age. Plus on the real…nobody under 30 buys your music. lol, Merry Christmas.

AFTER READING YOUR STATS MAYBE AGE DOES FACTOR IN. RECORD COMPANIES KNOWS THAT IT’S THE 18 YR OLDS WHO ARE BUYING RAP AND THAT’S WHO THEY MARKET TO. THIS IS WHY YOU SEE THAT SOME OF THE NEW RAPPERS ARE SO YOUNG SO THEY CAN MILK THEM FOR ALL THEY’RE WORTH. YOU HAVE TO REMEMBER THAT ESTABLISED RAPPERS AGES REFLECT THEIR AUDIENCES AND THEY’RE AUDIENCES TOO HAVE GOTTEN OLDER AND SOME OF THEIR MUSICAL TASTES CHANGED. ALSO, DECLINING SALES HAVE TO DUE WITH THE QUALITY OF MATERIAL THAT’S BEEN RELEASED. LIL BOW WOW IS YOUNG, BUT IS HIS SALES UP THERE WITH THE BIG DOGS?
IF YOUR MUSIC DOESN’T HAVE A MAJOR POP FEEL TO IT YOUR DEFINTELY NOT GONNA REACH PLATINUM STATUS. ALSO,I ATTRIBUTE SOME OF JAY-Z, KAYNE AND SNOOP SUCCESSES WITH COLLABRATIONS FROM ARTISTS OF OTHER MUSIC GENRES KEEPING THEIR STYLE FRESH AND INNOVATIVE THUS WIDING THEIR AUDIENCE. RAP IS JUST LIKE ANY OTHER MUSIC AND WHEN RAP EVOLVED, SO DID THE LISTENER. RAP IS SO MAINSTREAMED INTO OUR SOCIETY NOW AND THE RECORD COMPANIES PUT OUT SO MUCH CRAP.
THEY PUT OUT TUNES WITH A RAP BEAT THAT SHOULD BE CONSIDERED POP INSTEAD OF RAP AND THAT ALSO EATS AT SALES. SO I REALLY THINK THAT AGE HAS A HAND IN IT, BUT THE LACK OF QUALITY MATERIAL DEFINTELY IS ALSO THE BLAME

I BELIEVE IT’S NOT JUST THE AGE IT’S THAT RAP MUSIC IS LOSING ITS APPEAL. EVERYONE IS DOING THE SAME THING THE MUSIC SOUNDS THE SAME, EVERYONE HAS THE SAME LOOK, STYLE, AND THE ACTS ARE THE SAME. ESPECIALLY THEY ALL TALK ABOUT THE SAME THING MONEY, WOMEN, AND MATERIAL THINGS. SOME RAPPERS HAVE BEEN IN THE GAME FOR A WHILE NOW AND STILL TALK ABOUT THEIR DRUG DEALING LIFE. ITS TIME TO CHANGE… PLUS YOU HERE A TIGHT SONG AND THEN YOU BUY THE ALBUM AND ITS ONLY A COUPLE GOOD SONGS ON IT THATS ANOTHER REASON WHY RAP MUSIC IS DECLINING.

I think that we have enough discrimation in this world already. Now age? In hip hop? You forget those true street corner singers and rappers/poets? Many were well in the age range of 50. The Pop community is accepting Duran Duran back and many of them are either approaching 50. How about just let the artists be as long as they’re selling out events and CDs????

i think the problem in rap right now is that most of the artist are young, so their lyrics have no substance. at 19 or 20 yrs old most of these youngsters have only experienced what goes on in their five or six block radius, so thats why the game is trash. everybody’s saying the same thing with different slang. the rap game needs!!! to grow up a little more.

I don’t think age has to do with sales at all. I think it hs to do alot with the quality of the music. It seems to me that the more money the rappers get, the less effort and creativity they put in their music.

It don’t matter how old the MC is just take a look at Cool J If the MCing is still HOT it will sell units How many people will still buy a Rakim CD right now? Thought so!

These comments are shocking! 30 is not old at all. For the most part, if your going by appearance, people in their 30’s(in general) still have the same youthful look they had in their 20’s. I know many women and men who I just knew where like 23 or 24 and I later found out that they were like 33 and 38. Times are changing and what was considered “old” 20 years ago isn’t old anymore, so for someone to judge an artist music based on his/her age is crazy. As long as the artist doesn’t change their winning formula that got them to the top, people should continue to support them. It’s not the age, it’s how you look!! Example- Plies just got signed and he’s like 32!!!!!He looks 24!!!THINK ABOUT THAT!
