Last night’s show was so disappointing. Why didn’t you wait until later to produce a proper, dignified and more entertaining tribute to MJ? I wish that you had turned off Jaime’s *$% when he stated that MJ belonged to the Black community. So many cultures appreciate MJ’s talent and he broke down so many racial barriers. I understand that this was an awards show and you said that you had only a few days to prepare. Since this was the case, I wish that the producers had kept it simple. Perhaps a video montage of his performances and then select an artist that can sang to end the video montage.
Then announce that you are planning a more elaborate tribute later. This would have sufficed.
I was so very, very disappointed in the BET Awards show last night. Your last minute attempt to honor Michael Jackson would have been so much better had you not conformed to the foul language that you allowed on your show. Michael would have walked out of the building were he alive!!!! Your TV audience was a compilation of young and old viewers. Eddie Levert’s slip of the tongue is not included in this comment because it was obviously accidental. Unfortunately, the majority of your performers (including your host) had no respect for the viewers. I remember when BET was the pride of African-Americans because of the level of quality and quantity of its movies, music etc. , that it provided to viewers. Diversity does not have to be represented by that which lowers the level of a peoples’ respectability. As much as Michael loved children do you really think he would have appreciated what you presented to children last night???? Why did you feel it necessary to depict my race as a people who can only express our emotions with vulgar language? I am so disappointed.
I thought that the 09′ BET Awards was just ok. I was better than last year. But the BET Awards show has been known for it’s “WOW” factor-something that leaves everyone talking about what happened on the show. This is the same thing that has had other awards shows trying to copy your ideas. There was no “WOW” factor this year.
I think that Monica gave the best female vocal performance of the night. I also thought she was best-dressed. Her outfit even paid tribute to Michael Jackson.
Did anyone else notice that Keke Palmer, whose an actress sounded better than some of the female singers?
I loved the O’Jay’s!
I was so surprised to see Janet Jackson come out. I also saw Mr. Jackson in the audience-what strength and courage.
I’m so embarrassed for our people right now. The Michael Jackson “tribute” was anything but. It was flat out tasteless, and Jamie Fox should be ashamed. And the language from some of the announcers and performers-Are you serious? Is this how we want to be represented to the rest of the world? BET, are you proud of what you just put out there for all to see?
Terrible
This was truly embarrassing the lauguage and those tastless rappers I hope the FCC was watching. again you showed the world, American Blacks have no class. It is ashamed we as a people can not bury the “N” word that so many across this country have lost thier life behind. the CEO of BET should step down, if this is the best you can do. The tribute to Michael Jackson was very disrespectful from a entainer that did not try to offend people and was a perfectioness at his craft. BET we expect more from you.
The 2009 bet awards was a disgrace! First of all I thought it was supposed to be a tribute show to MICHAEL JACKSON it seemed to be a show promoting Jamie Fox up coming concerts which is something I have no desire to attend. He did a awful job as host, how do you honor someone and make off the wall jokes about them at the same time. The dance routine was bad,he performed several times, after watching and taping the show for about a hour I took my tape out of the recorder and headed to the Motown Museum where a real tribute and candle light visual was being held in honor for Mr. MICHAEL JACKSON. I wish I could apologize to the family for the disrespectful way bet honored such a great artist!
The comment Jamie foxx made about Michael Jackson being only the black people’s was so against how michael would have felt, in fact michael was trying to be white he even had white children thats saying a lot for them. Stars need to be conscience of what they are saying for the children’s sake. I liked Jamie Foxx before i heard that comment but i no longer respect him and will not watch anything he is associated with. Micheal must be looking down at him and saying “what were you thinking.

This awards show so disgusting and so disrespectful that two days later I’m still reeling from it! This was nothing more than a ratings ploy by Debra Lee and BET. This had NOTHING to do with honoring Michael Jackson, this had nothing to do with paying tribute to this man. All they cared about were ratings and they went on a media binge to make sure the world knew that BET was going to be the first to pay tribute to this man. What a JOKE! The world tuned in to buffonery, coonery and downright poor taste! This was a horrible reflection on the black community and it was a dishonor to the Jackson family. Allowing Lil Wayne, Drake, Baby and Young Money perform those disgusting songs with little girls on the stage was beyond disgusting and poor taste. There were so inappropriate moments I can’t even name them all.
Debra Lee wants to boast and brag about the show being put together in 3-4 days and it looked like exactly that! It was haphazardly thrown together with no thought!!! The only ones I feel who truly honored Michael with their performances were Ne-Yo, Jamie Foxx and Maxwell. The Ojays tribute was wonderful but the rest of the performances were GARBAGE and an embarrassment. Debra Lee needs to be FIRED ASAP for this spectacle that SHE allowed to go on Sunday night. I have never in my life been so horrified, disgusted and ashamed at a show the way I was Sunday night. I watched this show with my children and the majority of the show was inappropriate for them to see and hear!
A tribute show should have been done at a later date when more time, effort, thought and meaning could have been poured into it and when more TALENTED performers could partake in it! BET should have gone on with their original show plans instead of treating the world to such buffonery and disgracefulness! SHAME ON YOU BET and DEBRA LEE for showing the world your ignorance and poor taste and judgment!! We as a black people have more pride, respect and honor than what you displayed Sunday night. That was a mockery of Michael Jackson and a EXPLOITATION of his death and a RATINGS ploy and nothing more. SHAME ON YOU!!!
I was very offended by the comment that Jamie Foxx made. As quoted, “We want to celebrate this black man’s.. This black man! He belongs to us. And we shared him with everybody else.” I believe this comment goes against everything that Michael believed and the message he was sending to all people, “black or white.” Michael Jackson was an outstanding artist who crossed the racial divide and was known throughout the world. He was a big part of the music industry as a whole and many peoples lives. I do acknowledge and support black pride and the black community should be proud of Michael and his accomplishments. However, I feel like Jamie Foxx devalued how much he touched others as well.
I am glad someone said it! Way to go Krista.
Thank you Jamie Foxx for sharing MJ. Since we are separating and loaning artists by race to other races then I guess we should continue the divide. So,
us “white” people now claim Eminem and Justin Timberlake. All other races may listen to and support these artist, but please remember they are only on loan. They belong to “us”.
Thank you Jamie Foxx for entitling all races to claim their own. That is what music and Michael is all about! Right?
The BET Awards was horribly Ghetto and was not a tribute but a true disgrace! First of all it was unorganized, the sound was horrible, and the performances sucked! By no means did it captivate the legacy of Michael. If BET was going to do ANYTHING, they should have went on with the regular program, had a ten minute tribute to MJ, and then in a few weeks scheduled a true night to HONOR Michael Jackson, with real celebrities who loved and had a real compassion for MJ. Jamie Fox was NOT funny nor cute. As I was watching I felt like it was all a joke or some type of Roast of Michael. Not a tribute. And What In the HELL was Beyonce doing, singing, and wearing? I wasted my time watching and waiting for the tribute to my man Michael Jackson. I pray for his family and pray that everyone learns the true meaning of the word tribute! Michael I pray that you are in heaven singing to the Lord and showing the angels how to moon walk! =)
Was Jamie Foxx drunk? He was off que several times and was making off color comments that were even a stretch for him. Jamie seemed more interested in promoting is upcoming tour than remembering MJ. SHAME ON YOU JAMIE FOXX. I guess he’ll just “Blame it on the alcohol!”
This was so offensive on so many levels but the worst was awful Jamie Foxx plugging his Vegas shows. It was so inappropriate and disgusting to the point where had I not known Janet was appearing I would have never tuned in. I realize that BET had only a few days to reorganize the show but it was so tacky, ghetto and disgusting that I can only say it was done on a dime and with the most horrible line up of artists you can imagine paying tribute to one of the best entertainers of our or any time.
Man, Janie needs to get a grip. What a racist. Michael was a great artist that understood through his spirituality that skin, hair and eye color make no diffierence. Michael Jackson was simply GREAT no matter. A hundred years from now they will talk about what we learned from this Great Man in showing us that it’s about LOVE. Jamie still wants to be in a click. Let’s face it Beyonce is a white woman and she transcends into the black culture.
Jamie’s moonwalk was an insult to Michael Jackson. I agree, BET could have done a whole lot better. What a racist and a fake. Michael would not have been impressed with Jamie’s insults. Michael deserves better than this and Jamie should apologize.
I think that the show production was terrible. There were some good performances, but overall the show was a disappointment. The director of the show should be ashamed for allowing what was broadcasted. The Baby Boy sketch began okay, but quickly got out of control and not funny. The Rap collaboration at the end of the show was distastful, and especially for BET….the lyrics of the song says, I wish I can ___ all the girls in the world…..did they forget that we are leading carriers of HIV in the US. And all of this on a supposed 1st tribute to Michael Jackson to hit the tv screens. Wow…. BET.. get with it. I love my people, but overall, this was not a good representation.
….The BET awards (imo) was a complete joke.
I have never seen such a mockery of a “tribute” in my life.
The worst had to be “We want to celebrate this black man’s.. This black man! He belongs to us. And we shared him with everybody else.”
I cannot begin to describe how horrible this is on so many levels. Clearly MJ and who was was, went right this mans head.
Not only that, the “us” that is spoken of in this quote, quite frankly, most were embarrassed and shunned him long ago. The majority of his fans from start to finish were not of black majority. In fact, if I recall correctly, I think Mr Foxx himself has made fun of him in the past.
The only highlight to that show was Janet Jackson, and I’m sorry she had to see that “tribute”.
I believe BET is the reason why the Jackson’s advised Al Sharpton the next day that they had to be careful about holding tributes. I am sure they were more embarrassed by the award show than we were. I was bamboozled into watching

One word describes the BET awards show this year, DISGUSTING! It should have been called the Jamie Foxx awards show. I hardly ever watch the awards show the first time around and this year especially proved to me why I don’t! I will never look at BET the same again. I agree that they should have went ahead as planned and did a ten minute or so tribute at the end of the show and then do a REAL tribute later this summer with REAL artists who loved Michael like the rest of us. They did not honor Michael at all needless to say.
I might be wrong for saying this but why in the world would they let the legendary Don go on stage and make a fool of himself! Everyone else had a partner. And why would they have those young little girls on stage during a song that’s talking about humping every girl in the world! Do we even have to wonder why 12 year olds become mothers? I thougt the Baby Boy skit was totally inappropriate, there are thousands of baby boys sitting on their momas couch right now. Almost everything about the show was way out left field. All we can do is bow our heads in shame. Once again we were used and abused by our own people.
I hope someone from BETs executive office reads these comments and takes them to heart.
