Well what do we have here??????Don’t ask me where this record came from or whose album it’s going to be on because I have the SLIGHTEST idea. All I know is I opened up my inbox and saw the record sitting there patiently waiting for it to be emancipated from it’s slot.

Obviously (well to most), I’m not the BIGGEST Lil Weezy fan, but I can definitely dig this scorcher. Is it me or am I the only one feeling the sudden urge to screw my face up and throw my hoody over my head? Just me? Ok…..

I wonder what label is preparing to knock down my door because of this tune???? Dah well, its the weekend some I’m pretty sure they’re not paying attention to SoundOff…..or are they??? Shouts to The NMC.

This past summer I promised myself that I would never ever (ever, ever) use the word “swagger” again. Like so many other terms in black vernacular, it seemed swagger had literally took on a life of its own. I was fed up. People were no longer being judged on the content of their character, but instead on how much swag they had.

It all reminded me of the final scene in Juice when Omar Epps’ character is told “you got the juice now.” Swagger is “the juice” version 2008 and everyone ( and they momma) thinks they have it. Now I admit, I have used the “s” word once or twice. Upon seeing a guy that by all standards is not attractive, I have said things such as “ yeah his eye is kind of lazy, but he has swag.” So when I made the resolution to retire the term, it was in many ways, the first step to recovery.

I admitted I had a problem, and I vowed to fix it. And then something happened. The track Swagger Like Us happened. T.I., Kanye, Jay-Z and Lil’ Wayne happened. Sampling a line from M.I.A’s Paper Planes, this hip-hop quartet makes a seemingly undeniable claim in one of the hottest songs this fall- no one has swagger like them. Of course Jim Jones would beg to differ, but I’m really more interested in what you think.

Who, in the music industry, has the most swagger? I know.. I know.. by asking this question I am perpetuating usage of the word, but hey- if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. Swag on playa… swag on.

We’ve known Common as our musical professor, our lyrical connoisseur and even our hip hop savior. Given those elements, Common has stayed relevant with his sound, his content and his image and with his new album Invincible, he falls anything but short in reaching those characteristics once again. His first single, “Universal Mind Control (U.M.C.)” is a fine tuned reason as to why Common will never remain in one lane. Although I wasn’t crazy about it off first listen, I can truly say it sounds NOTHING like what you’re hearing on your local radio station at this very moment.

You may raise your eyebrows when you click that link below, but I damn sure doubt you’ll be disappointed. U.M.C. is the lead off to Common’s eighth Lp, Invincible, which is scheduled to drop this July. Though Kanye West produced a bulk of Common’s last body of work, Finding Forever, his contributions this time around will be obsolete due to his Glow In The Dark Tour which concludes in Calagry, AB, Canada, Friday (May 30). Pharrell Williams and Outkast producer, Mr. DJ provided the soundscape for Common’s new LP.
