The Blackest White Singers Are…

January 2nd, 2008

As I’ve discussed in a previous blog, Blue-Eyed Soul wasn’t born yesterday. Robin Thicke, Amy Whinehouse and Justin Timberlake are just the latest singers to join a movement who began in the 60s and reached a peak in the 80s with singers like Michael McDonald, Daryl Hall (Hall & Oates) and Rick Astley just to name a few.

As always, folks disagreed on which singers have earned the “black” or “soulful” tags.  While some credit Phil Collins for being soul, the aforementioned artists had us thinking they were brothers before we finally saw their videos. So, what exactly about a singer makes him sound “black?” Is it all vocals, or does it also have to do with production? Sound Off!

I love amy whinehouse . Her song REHAB is whats up! Thats my jam. I hope she gets the help she needs cause she into that crack bad, but homegirl has a great set of pipes on her. If she wasn’t in the news so much I wouldn’t know she was white. I like john mayer too.

I like Robin Thicke. It don’t matter if he is not black with a soulful voice, he can sing. I love his album The Evolution Of Robin Thicke. He’s just has a soulful voice. His father is white and his mother is white that don’t mean people should criticize where he come from. That’s all I have to say I’m out.

I must agree that white soul singers have the most unbiased appeal to an audience. They have every element of success- sending chill bumps down your spine with great vocals as their melodic voices grace the speakers, and (whiteness)- which we all know is higly marketable. I don’t believe so much in the idea that one sounds black, although I do feel like the most recognizable and well- liked voices are those voices where the desperation, arrogance, hate, love, pleasure and pain is felt in the lyrics and heart of the song.

Stupidity must be contagious. Robin Thicke is Black if he has a Black parent. There is no such thing as “half black”.

er. I reckon stupidity must be contagious then. If as the post above says he is black cos he has a black parent, and his other parent is white, does that also mean he is white (as well as black). It takes two to tango… Regardless of whether he’s black, white or half of each or got a few quarters or eights of other basic racial groups thrown in,like most folks have if you go back far enough and are pedantic enough, he’s still a great singer.

the most soulful (white) group ever… was the Magnificent Men (the greatest untold story)

they harmonized and “sang” like the brothers hitting some falsetto notes the had the sisters screaming on the chitlin circuit (all the black clubs out east in the mid 60’s)

They were first and only white group to headline at the Apollo… intially being booed and trashed in their first appearance when they opened the curtain and they saw 7 white boys (until they started to sing)and then given a standing ovation

all the black folks knew about them but they could never cross over to white america.

Ya’ll need to know your soul music

what about the Suprise Sisters from England back in the 70s and80s you couldn’t get four white girls sounding so black. What happen to them ?

first time i heard eminem i had no idea who he was. my friend said he was white but i didnt believe her until i saw the album cover. still blown away, voted best rapper alive…

I’m a white guy and prefer heavily instrumented music. That being said, there is absolutely no argument that a soulful voice can melt a grown man’s heart. Here are some bluesy/blue-eyed soul artists to give a second listen to… The Animals, Eric Burdon, early Chicago, Blood, Sweat and Tears, and The Spencer Davis Group. All amazing vocals.
