Top 10- 10 Things You WON’T See @ The 2009 BET Awards
June 27th, 2009
I can GUARANTEE you will NOT see these 10 things come Sunday night….As the 2009 BET Awards inch closer and closer, we here at BET.com would like to set some ground rules as to what you WILL not see this Sunday. Now I know, award shows are all about the surprises, the theatrics, but at some point, a line has to be drawn…an envelope doesn’t need to be pushed lol.
Of course, with Eminem having another mans tush thrown in his face at the MTV Movie Awards several weeks back, a majority of you are pondering the thought of “What will BET do to top that?” NOTHING- so don’t even ask lol.
I wanted to pump this list out several days prior, but I figured I’d wait till the ceremony got a bit closer. In jest, of course, these 10 items are in no way, shape or form geared to offend anyone at all. And if you’re familiar (you should be by now) with my commentary, you already know I’ve never have. So, without further ado, I present, The Top 10 Things You Will NOT See At The 2009 BET Awards. ENJOY!
10.) You will not see Alicia Keys & Swizz Beatz confess their undying love for each other (i.e. hit the red carpet together). With Swizzy putting a GAG order on Ms. Keys about the aforementioned issue, I’m pretty sure the two will sit on opposite sides of the auditorium. Hell, they might even go as far as arriving with their own dates. Smh, whatever happened to black love.
9.) You probably won’t see Drake announce his label home since I pretty much did it for him on this side of town. Not trying to burst his “Surprise I signed with..” bubble, but that information pretty much fell into my lap so I had no choice but to let it ooze all over the BET Awards Blog. Was I wrong?? Wouldn’t care if I was.
8.) You probably won’t see me present an award holding a Coldstones Bang Bang Boogie Milkshake while wearing an exclusive pair of SB Blazers with one of the SEXIEST Hanes White-Tee Shirts in the HISTORY of Hanes Apparel. All while standing next to Keri Hilson who has her hand in my back left pocket humming the melody to “Make Love” while we walk to the podium as she attempts to watch my sodium. And this WON’T happen only because I missed 67567657 flights Friday morning, afternoon and night because US Airways thought it would be funny to film their new reality series “Punked: The Delayed & Canceled Flights” Edition.
7.) You damn sure won’t see Rihanna and Chris Brown sitting next to each other. I’m not saying you won’t see them at the awards at all, I’m just guaranteeing you will NOT see them arrive or sit anywhere remotely close to each other.
6.) You DEFINITELY will not see any stabbings, open hand slaps, chain snatching, gun toting or weave pulling activities anywhere inside The Shrine Auditorium. I don’t care how ghetto some of these artists and their “Yes Men” maybe, I REFUSE to tolerate ANY tom foolery of the sort. And if i do…..you can bet your ASS I’m popping off on someone lol. I didn’t camp out in 3 airports over the past 48 hours to witness a bunch of FUC*ERY.
5.) You will not see or hear Lil Wayne announce bringing another crumb snatcher into this world. Assuming the rumors about him knocking up Lauren London and Nivea are valid, he’s PROBABLY doing his best to stay away from any podium tomorrow night.
4.) You will not see or hear “Auto-Tune”. See #5 for reason why.
3.) You will NOT see Shawn Corey Carter sporting THIS. I, along with everyone else who is a fan of grooming, can and will NOT tolerate this anymore. We love Jay like our very own, but it’s just not fair to our eyes, his scalp and mankind. Please Jay………..PLEASE! If you hit that stage with THIS, I just might lose it lol.
2.) You will not see Shanaynay land ass up in the lap of Young Jeezy, Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, The Clipse, Pharrell, T-Pain, Soulja Boy, Nelly, Ludacris, Ne-Yo, Rick Ross, Kanye West, Fabolous or any other male hip hopper. And if you DO, I strongly suggest you DUCK!
1.) You WILL NOT see Jamie Foxx lip locking with Debra Lee. I know Foxx is the host and that pretty much gives him the green light to push every envelope, but like I said before, we’re doing this a bit different. Fantasia was shocking, Halle Berry made the male species envious, but Debra Lee???????????????? NOW THAT’S JUST WRONG!
Sincerly

WHAT A DISGUSTING, GHETTO, CRASS AND ARROGANT “TRIBUTE”!!
BET IT’S TIME FOR YOU TO CLOSE UP SHOP!!!
I was truely diappointed at times in this show. Vhing Rhimes was he drunk or just acting. This seemed like a ghetto party & not a tribute to Michea; Jackson BET could have done better. Beyonce & a performance in her show the day after & did a better job. Joe Jackson should have stayed home he didn’t look like he was mourning the lost of a son but as he said an icon. The Lil Wayne & Drake performance with his daughter & those young children on the show dancing & singing was to raunchy & should never have been done.
I am so glad…shoot everyone said everything I was thinking…
I can’t get the image of Jamie Foxx TELLING the audience to make noise…thinking the camera wasn’t rolling…
Michael Jackson had 100s faint at one concert show.
People know a MJ song before they know english.
BET IS A DISGRACE.
Well, I can not say that I hated the show as much as the other people who posted above me. Actually, right after Jamie Foxx disrespected Michael at the very beginning of the show, I decided to turn the channel. Clearly, I made the right decision because judging from what everyone is saying, I would have been terribly disappointed. However, I am sorry that I did miss the Janet jackson portion of the awards, but after seeing Jamie I was just so over this show. I am not a fan of BET anyway lately, but was so hoping that they were going to show the other main stream media just how much we loved our KIng of Pop, and we failed miserably.
For the first time in many years, BET had an opportunity to capture a wide range of viewers from across the world to see what was supposed to be a tribute to the late Michael Jackson. Instead, BET used this occasion to peddle and promote FILTH. I don’t expect any regrets or an apology from BET because this is what they do best – peddle and promote FILTH at any and all costs.
BET INSULTED THE MEMORY OF MICHAEL! and you dare claim him as your own!
Like many, i tuned in hoping for a classy event dedicated to the memory and legacy of Michael Jackson. But that show was a disgrace, the only saving grace was Janet coming out, and Ne-Yo’s performance. Advertising this as a MJ tribute to exploit ratings?? didnt think even BET would stoop that low, but clearly I was wrong.
This video is a good tribute to MJ, they could at least have put together a video like this to play

Debra Lee you have to demand better. The profanity started on your watch! The foolishness and lack of professionalism has gotten worse each year. The shows as well. Where’s the news!
Everybody should boycott BET, first, for not honoring Michael all weekend long. VH1 ran his videos ALL WEEKEND after he passed. MTV had specials for hours throughout the days of the weekend, showing only a few other programs in between. What did BET do??? Show Madea’s family reunion and other stupid programs, that can be seen anytime!!! What a disgraceful network…and you call yourselves Black Entertainment Television, yet you couldn’t even set aside AT LEAST 1 day for Michael Jackson??? I waited to see this “So Called Tribute” to MJ at the BET Awards Show….what a waste of my time. I understand the show had to be restructured, but dang….maybe you should have left it like it was, could have been better. Nobody worth seeing was there (except Maxwell, and he was too classy for that pathetic show). And if the rumor of Jay Z threatening to pull from the show if Chris Brown performed is true, this network should definitely be boycotted. If he & Beyonce would have not performed…guess what….it would have been worth NOT seeing them, because her performance was horrible, and I left the room when he came on. My 12 year old son could have danced & sang for the awards if you were that strapped to find decent talent to pay homage to MJ. What a way to NOT pay tribute to Michael Jackson, BET…..PATHETIC!!!!!!
I was truly disgusted with the BET Awards. I agree with most of the comments here. There were several things I had issues with.
1. Soulja Boy with his pants hanging off his ass. That song is utterly ridiculous and he shouldn’t have even been allowed to perform it. And on top of that, he didn’t say a word about Michael Jackson.
2. T Pain, his liquor and his “Big Ass Chain”. I understand that BET had no idea he would do that but to continue to invite these “artists” to make appearances on LIVE television knowing that they have a history of being – for a lack of a better word – ghetto, is plain ol’ stupid.
3. The cussing. Again, these artists knew the show was live but they disregarded that and insisted on acting like fools anyway. Whoever was on censorship that night was probably frustrated as hell trying to catch the expletives. I must have heard “N-gga” 8x in one song. Eddie Levert with his “dancing and sh-t” and Ving Rhames (!)…I was truly disgusted.
4. Having those little teenie boppers who are probably still in grade school up on the stage with Lil Wayne and his filthy mouth was wrong on so many levels!
5. 95% of the show was a waste of 3 hours. Why was Jamie Foxx trying to get the camera man to zoom in on his “camel toe”??? Do we really want a close-up of his crotch?
6. I was appalled to see Joe Jackson sitting in the front row with Al Sharpton of all people! Why was he not at home grieving? Michael ain’t even cold yet and he’s out on the town enjoying himself. Shame on you, Joe!
7. Jay Z was allowed to come on and perform a song dissing T Pain and his Autotone during a show that was supposed to be dedicated to Michael Jackson?? I don’t get it.
When do we get to have the White entertainment awards? Isn’t it hypocritical to have just the BET ones? I don’t think our hero Michael Jackson would approve.
I have watched the BET Awards for many years and Sunday was the “WORST” production I have every witness. I could not get over all the “Blimping” Jamie Fox and thewhole show was a disgrace to the Black Race. What has happen to our “Morals” when honoring the dead the cussing and pants hanging under the butt was just horrible. The singers in my opinion could not….. did not sing well if this is what I have to look forward to next year I will not be tuning in. It was a hot mess. Just so very “Low Class” for what I’ve always thought was a very high class entertainment company. Debra Lee I’m very disappointed that you allowed it I’ve always thought you to be a classy women. I’m just very disappointed in the production of Sunday’s event. I’m very sad that it has come to this with BET.
Get over Michael Jackson!
He left this world as an overindulgent man with the legacy for his family of outstanding debt that they can never repay.
Nat King Cole and Mr. BB KIng paved the way for so many performers.
Elvis Presley did also. He also had his flaws but was a very genorous man and gave his money away.
Being compared to the President. As the Brits say “bollocks!!” What did he really contribute of significance?
The. Worst. Show. Ever! Jay-Z song really needs Auto-tunes on that DOA track.
I have watched the BET awards shows every years. Mo’Nique by far has been the best host. As much as I love Jaime Foxx, he was really overkill Sunday night.
All of the performances left me cold. It is a true testament to real artists like Michael Jackson, the O’Jays, and Whitney Houston. The new artists are sorely lacking in professionalism and talent. They need to study and learn.
And, what MJ tribute would be complete without Chris Brown and Usher, two young artists who were clearly influenced by Michael. Very dumb to not include two young artists that actually have talent because they studied the best, MJ!
The fact that BET would let Drake and Lil Wayne get on stage and rap that song with what looked to be very young girls on stage is a travesty. BET had an opportunity to really honor Michael in a special way from his people. What we got was buffoonery and mayhem. Exceptions go to Maxwell and surprisingly, Ciara.
Debra Lee, Stephen Hill and BET get a big FAIL for this one. It will take a long time to get me back. Come on black people, we can do better.
OMG MOSTLY ALL OF THE PERFORMERS SOUNDED HORRIBLE,AND ALSO KEYSHIA COLE AND MONICA WERE GOOD BUT I FELT LIKE MONICA OUT DID KEYSHIA….????
the bet awards was an embarassment. jamie fox should be ashame. debra lee, how could u approve that show. lil wayne and lil girls or you serous. who care about frankie and neffie, and tiny and toya, a waste of money. can’t wait to see what mtv does. bet thump down..
That whole show was the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen. The only thing I enjoyed was Neyo’s performance by himself, and the BBD, Keith Sweat, and OJays tribute. Beyonce’s performance could’ve been left out, and so could Jay Z’s. The most disgusting of all was Lil Wayne’s performance. How sickening was it to see him have his daughter and her friends whose MOTHER’S were also in attendance up there dancing to a song talking about sexing every girl in the world. That was the most inappropriate thing I have seen and BET should be ashamed of allowing that bafoonery to transpire.
Is it true that Jay-Z started acting like a spoiled brat when he found CB was going to perform? Why is the 40 yr old man picking a fight with Chris? DUDE you are like 40…… sit your grown ass down some where!
Enough is enough! It is time to take a stand against BET and the negative portrayal of African-Americans. The 2009 BET Awards were a complete and total DISGRACE. I encourage everyone posting a comment on this website to contact BET, Viacom, Al Sharpton and whoever it takes to ensure that we never see another embarrassing production like the BET Awards on the air again.
Michael Jackson is a GLOBAL icon and the WORLD was watching this tribute. After his death was reported, several major websites, including Facebook, Twitter, and others were shutdown due to the unprecedented traffic, as people went online to confirm the news. Michael Jackson opened doors for virtually every African-American artist – MTV did not want to show black artists until Michael Jackson changed the game. Given all of his contributions, Michael deserved a world class tribute, and BET failed MISERABLY. The show was an embarrassment to African-Americans and to the country at large. It would have been better for BET to wait and produce a separate tribute show, than to tie Michael’s memory to this 2009 Minstrel Show. It was so bad that I don’t even know where to begin:
– Jamie Foxx: He failed miserably as the host. He was vulgar, and his humor was disrespectful and inappropriate. He used the show heartlessly for self-promotion and his comment about “Michael belonging to us” was completely out of line and against everything that Michael Jackson stood for.
– Beyonce: She is a talented performer and could have used this as an opportunity to showcase Michael Jackson’s choreography and his influence on her career. Instead, she engaged in a self-indulgent performance of “Ava Maria” that was completely hypocritical, given that she was dressed like a prostitute. The performance was all about HER and was not moving at all.
– T-Pain: He is an embarrassment to the black community and embodies every negative stereotype that has every existed about us. I can hear Rush Limbaugh and Bill O’Reilly laughing to themselves as he “shucked and jived” across the stage in his “BIG ASS CHAIN”. He even had the nerve to bring alcohol on stage during a tribute show.
– Blame it on Alcohol – Just what we need – a big monument to alcohol in the middle of a black award show. This could have been the theme for the night, because clearly the producers and everyone involved must have been drunk in allowing this calamity to go on the air.
– Baby Boy Skit – Taraji Henson, you can forget about every getting another Oscar nomination after that ghetto display. Ving Rhames should have been carried off the stage like they used to do on Showtime at the Apollo – where is Sandman Sims when we need him?
– Mary Mary – You are defiling gospel music. Enough said.
– Soulja Boy – Another source of embarrassment. Pure ignorance on display for the world.
– Don Cornelius – He should have been stopped 5 minutes into his speech. Watching him ramble on was like watching paint dry – just painful.
– L’il Wayne and Drake – The icing on the cake. Hands down the most agregious performance that I have ever seen. Having young girls on stage to hear grown men use such vulgar language was just disgusting.
In closing, we have an African-American president in office who already has an uphill battle to fight. He will face resistance every step of the way due to the color of his skin. The last thing we need to do is to keep reinforcing negative images of African-Americans and sending them into the media and around the world. BET – please stop. Remove Tiny & Toya, Frankie and Neffe and all of the other minstrel shows from the air. Debra Lee – Take a look in the mirror and realize what you are doing and make this stop.
