Torrence’s Talk with Tonex: Part 3
Published by Torrence Glenn on Thursday, March 26, 2009 at 3:52 pm.Of all the clips, I’d probably call this the “Must Watch.”
In Part 3 of my convo with Tonex, he addresses the differences between the gospel industry and the gospel public, artist cliques and “deep” saints. (Floaties still by the door, on the left.) He also shares some surprising thoughts on “religion” as a whole.

I agree Rein good point ! and well said.
Um….Where’s parts 4 and 5?
Good question
Like I said on the previous page, I’ll say again. I’m agnostic and I think a disservice was done to Ton3x by being distributed via “gospel” rather than “secular” (during his ‘debut”). A good cross-over single (ie; “The Good Song” from his first CD, “Bout A Thang for O2, and “Syng” for “Out the Box) would’ve allowed him to give his message in the complete CD, while at the same time being him. Gospel/church folks are EXTREMELY @%#~ retentive. Move slightly out of their clique and they will brand you with the scarlet letter!!
No need for someone to “break scriptures” down to me, b/c I don’t follow that belief. And I do know what it’s like to have style LIGHT YEARS ahead of others who are in a southern suburban VA town (when I wore my long Senegalese twists in my hair back in 1993 in High School, everyone wanted to burn me). I’m standing in THE TRUTH, which is love.
Ton3x I just wanna say that you have to be one way Holy spirit filled or spirit filled. What I’m observing and hearing in your music is a war of two worlds, now if you were totally on God’s side your shear you-ness could bring so many souls to God, but if they hear why do you try to blend, then let play some Jodeci the I know that your consumers are getting mixed messages, so you need to be totally clear, because God is looking for Holy-Ness. I say this in love, because I would not that the world have such a blessed and gifted and supremely anointed vessel as you. God bless ya, JHD/B-Thr33
For T0n3x in hopes you read this: I only recently found out about the release of your new album, Congratulations! I began to look around and stumbled across this site. I have to say I’m not at all surprised you STILL being the most controversial gospel artist on the planet. It’s amazing how little we’ve grown as a people after so many years. My message to you is, continue to keep your head up, your mind focused on what you and I both know, you are called by God to do and your hearing selective.
I am so proud of you and what you have accomplished in your personal life as well as professionally. It has been a long time since a very charitable donation (on your part) of a last minute request to arrange a musical selection for a group of preschoolers at a small Christian School in San Diego many years ago.
I respect how you’re able to remain true to yourself & who you serve in the midst of media scrutiny, and public criticism, like this page of comments for example. It has really been exciting to see the growth in you. You HAVE GROWN so much since Silent X and Damage. Musically, lyrically and spiritually I see you’re CONTINUING TO GROW through ‘Unspoken’. But, what’s really awesome is the fact that, God is not through with you yet.
For the commentators:
“Pontificate the myth that all Christians do is quibble and nit pick at each other”……CHECK.
T0n3x has always been true to HIMSELF AND to GOD, since Tonéx (LOL). It is hard to find an artist who displays just as much compassion, sensitivity and conciliatory honesty as he does pure talent and true passion for what he does lyrically, vocally and spiritually through music. However, it never ceases to amaze me how quick we come to judgment of each other especially within the Christian community with our own so–called, ‘brother’s and sisters’. I challenge you to live a minute in his shoes, go through a minute of what he’s been through and still come out lifting up the name of Jesus.
There are a group of people, who want, what Glenda says is “authenticity, pure and simple”. Fortunately, there’re more than enough artists out there who fit that profile and she can turn up the ipod and be happy with life. However, not all of us relate to the same definition of authenticity that Glenda desires. What may be authentic in her world may not be in mine or anyone else’s for that matter. IMO, it’s EXTREMELY important, especially in this business (W.W.F.C.) that we attempt to reach out to as many souls as possible. There are a lot of people whose lives can/will be changed through T0n3x’s music and the message behind his lyrics.
You don’t have to wait for interviews to find out what T0n3x is “really thinking, what is the Holy Spirit saying to him,” or my favorite, “What has God sent him back out to do with his music?” He has answered all of those questions through ‘Unspoken’. His ministry IS through music. Sometimes we get so busy talking (being critical & analytical of words) that we miss the very message we need, that day, within that hour, and that message very well may be ‘Unspoken’. (Pun intended)
I’m sure there were plenty of times, not to mention offers of a more promising future in secular music. And more than likely the offers were more than tempting, I don’t know if I would turn them down had I been in his shoes, honestly. But, he knows who he is, who the God is within him and what he is called to do. Who are we to Judge? COM ‘on people, we don’t enter his gates through our keen fashion sense and how well we were able to BLEND into society’s definition of normality; nor do we get in through our insatiable pleasure to judge ‘our brother’.
Let’s challenge ourselves to see the soul/spirit of an individual instead of his/her otter-shell. ‘Get your house in order’ is not always a literal interpretation. Your spiritual house (within you) needs to be clean and in my opinion too many of us are walking pass our neighbors house too preoccupied on what color they painted it without ever walking in to see all the wonderful and glorious things they have within it.
To all of you out there: Be true to yourself and to who you are love God in all you do.
To T0n3x: Stay strong sweetie. May God continually bless you and your family.
Suggestion for next album title:
Watch me do me….in Jesus Name.
Featuring the #1 single: “a little som’in for my haters”

Ton3x, what if people’s truths don’t lead them to Jesus as you say their truths should, can they still be saved?
If not, would you ever let them know?
If so, how?
Hi, Michelle, I apologize if you dont like the way I posed my questions to Mr. Tonex, but I can only ask the questions, the way I ask them. I never told him I was not happy with his music, or life or that my “own little world” was in any way disturbed by his choices. I think you need to re-read my post and see what way I was using that “authenticity, pure and simple” I said that as it related to contrasting “too deep saints” If you’re going to comment and use MY name, please don’t take what I said out of context. Thank you.
I have read all of the comments, even from other blog post and I am deeply sadden about the way “Christians” treat other Christians. First let me say that God did not make us to be “cookie cutter” Christians, even our finger prints are not identical. With that said, just because I do not dress like certain people, or talk like certain people, does not mean I do not love God any more or less. I have learned to be what God wants me to be. What people want me to be may not be in line with what God wants. Also we as Christians must remember that God is a God of choice. He makes no one love Him. We must come to Him. We as Christians have no right to force our will on people of other faith. It is our duty to show people love, pray that the blinds of darkness be removed from their eyes and share the gospel of Jesus Christ, not force it, but share it. The gospel tells me that we are not wrestling against flesh and blood, but against principalities and rulers in high places. We can not fight the flesh in the flesh. After I read some of the comments, it is evident that most Christians do not understand those scriptures. I may not agree with everything Tonex is doing or saying, but I can pray with him and for him. I can love him where he is and pray God complete His perfect work in this brother. I am not here to tear down, but to build up and pray. The Word tells me they shall know us by our love. Where is the love? I am seeing a lot of judgment and hate. I do not know what this brother has gone through in his life and if the Lord so desire to reveal it, I am to pray in the Spirit that God protects him and restore him. After reading numerous comments on the web and some blog sites, I am ashamed of what we called Christian behavior. If I were of another faith and were not saved, after reading some of the comments, I would have a hard time coming to the faith. Also, if Tonex is wrong or lost, the negative hateful, and judgmental comments would not win him back. Lastly, I would like Christians to get upset with lying and cheating preachers like they are with Tonex. I would like for them to get this upset when little boys and girls are getting molested in our churches daily. I want them to get upset like this when the devil is wrecking havoc in our streets and our black men and women our dying. Get upset with how some churches are emotionally and spiritually abusing the flock.
According to the traffic from my blog to this site, I imagine that my blog is one of those you speak of James. And according to you it’s okay for us to get upset with pastors who are lying and cheating, pastors molesting children and a whole list of other “sins” of our Christian people – but it’s not okay to place Tonex on that list? Since when is Tonex excluded?
Christianity is in a real crisis in our country because of the watering down of the gospel and the pervasive belief from Christians that they can live like the unsaved – as long as Christ forgives them! There’s a belief that you can “be real” with yourself which can include a multitude of sins and you can be right with God.
Tonex is a preacher of this type of Christian living. He’s more concerned about people finding their own way to God – anyway they can rather than preach sound doctrine. Homosexual? Do you hear Tonex lovingly tell you not to be gay and obey God? No, he’s too busy worrying about being homophobic because of how it may affect his record sells. I’m only going by his own words folks. I’m very curious if anyone was on the gay cruise he went on and if Tonex warned any gays that their lifestyle is completely unacceptable to God.
There’s a place for open and public rebuke folks and with Tonex being a pastor, much more is required of him. There is no doubt that he is a musical genius, talented dancer and actor as well. He is also articulate and exudes much intelligence. Tonex is no dummy – but it’s his godly wisdom that’s sorely lacking. His statement he made on this video is proof of that and very disappointing from one who is called “anointed of God!”
When he has an open opportunity to share the gospel, to give others a reason for the “hope that is within him,” he goes and makes a statement saying that “I respect all faiths and I’ve studied all faiths. So you know how can you really understand humankind if your way is the only way?” What kind of talk is that coming from a Christian pastor?
A few of the commenters on this board picked that up as well. And then the only thing that Tonex can come up with to clarify it is this: “Well don’t get twisted…God has a way of allowing people to take their own path in search of the truth to finally get TO the truth in which we know to be Jesus.” Even if this were to be true, there would be NO need for pastors, teachers, evangelist because heck, every one would just find their ways to Jesus anyways! What a very lame and incorrect answer – a deadly answer for those who don’t know the real truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
I’m just as angry at the type of pastor Tonex is as I am at any other type of pastor who would dare dilute the gospel of Jesus Christ.
And folks, it’s quite okay to do that!
lol they wrote “Tonex on Snnday best” LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!
Tonex Man Keep up the Good Work your Album is Hot My Favorite Songs on there is unspoken & Wired Don’t worry about what People think you just keep on Doing a Work For God Remember When Jesus was on the Earth People Rejected Him Called Him Names But that Did not stop Jesus From Completing His Mission. And that was to Saved People From There Sins. That’s Why He Died On The Cross to Saved those That Were Lost.
Please Comment
I think that before we comment on anything we must listen closely to what someone is saying. I didn’t receive it controversaly when he said I know that Jesus Christ is the way for me. Just point blank Jesus Christ is the way and for others they have found another way but that don’t make it the right way. Good Lord! The man was just paraphrasing. Why do we have to find something to be argumentive about. Just seek the Lord while he may be found and listen in the spirit next time and stop listening out of your fleshly ears.
When u are a christian u are conformed to God,not yrself or anybody-else.Therefore you will LOOK like CHRIST (only).IF SOMEONE THINKS A CERTAIN WAY THEY WOULD LOOK THAT WAY.
As a man thinketh in his heart so is he.Our bodies are God’s temple.Ppl should not feel CONFUSED when they look at or see a CHRISTIAN ,caz they would DEFINITELY know the difference,THAT ’s our problem as christians right now.
We do n’t REALLY want to be SE-PER-RATE from the world.Or do we know how to?Really?
And therefore this is one of the enemy’s scheme’s to confuse the believer,never-the-less, GOD LOVES ALL OF HIS CHILDREN,and we must love and help eachother.
Hmmmm comment on part 3… How can you “witness” to someone, and tell them about the Gospel if you believe that their is more than one way? It’s not a matter of disrespect per say of other religions but its standing your ground and saying that there can only be one truth? That truth is Jesus Christ and Him crucified. He is the way the truth and the life. And that on a very basic level is offensive to those who don’t believe. So am I being disrespectful for stating what I believe to be the TRUTH? I don’t think so. But when I have said this in diverse circles in the past it is always taken and received that way. So why should we as Christians have to kow-tow to other religions and pay lip service to what they believe? To prove that we are open minded? Well the way is NARROW and few find it… so on that basis alone TRUE Christianity is EXCLUSIVE not inclusive. If you believe the Bible is the infallible Word of God then you have just flown in the face of what the Word of God says…. Yes God loves everyone. I am not disputing that in anyway. But those who don’t come to know Him through His Son Jesus… those who are not called as one of His elect… those who do not surrender to Him as LORD and SAVIOR….will spend eternity in a place that was never intended for us. Hell. I can’t say I’m a fan or ever have been for that matter… but this live and let live easy-believeism madness, relativistic inclusiveism that is becoming so prevalent among evangelicals and Christiandom in general has got to stop.
