Sup folks!
Last night’s episode of Sunday Best was so epic! The contestants were already singing their faces off from the beginning but they all took it even further, it was bananas! Which is why I keep having to remind myself, that whoever goes home is going to be good so we have to work on taking the elimination news better. It hurts to see a good singer go, but there are no bad ones so what are we gonna do? Ha!
I also read all of your comments and know that Dathan Thigpen was a major favorite of many of you and I know quite a few of you took it hard. So I’m glad I’m able to let Dathan speak to you, his new fans/stans, himself!

Funny story: Me and Franklin Davis IV met Torrence in the restroom at one of the tapings, and I threatened if he gave me a bad review I’d come looking for him. No search has been needed as he has been gracious to me. Random thought: I also met Kurt Carr in the restroom at the taping he opened up for. I should’ve been like the man who was bowing down in the restroom to Akeem on Coming to America, “It is you…I will cherish this moment for the rest of my life!” Anywho, here we are. Wow, BET, thanks for allowing me to expose what my church gets to see in praise and worship every week to the world. I’ve been labeled the praise and worship contestant and I’m fine with that. That is what I do! This chapter in the book of Dathan has been one of my favorites so far. The long lines, the audition process, the holes in the jeans…ok let me talk about that for a min…
Everyone was making a big deal about me wearing holes in my jeans. I mean I would go to the gas station and some random person would be like, “ Hey, I bet you got rid of those jeans!” C’mon…dude…serious?? Story behind the jeans: I woke up about 4 in the morning, grabbed what I had on the night before (holey jeans and a t-shirt), and drove to the audition. Understanding the audition process a little, I knew there was a second day for those who made it to the final round. I prepared a change of clothes in case I did. What I didn’t know was that we had to keep on whatever we wore on the first day of auditions. So that’s why I was wearing “torn up jeans in the knees.” I posted an audition remix on Youtube that Pastor Donnie thought was hilarious. So yeah, the long lines, the audition process, the holes in the jeans, and making it on the show, I loved every second of this experience.
I noticed a lot of comments on the Internet asking if I had a CD or if I am professional already. It’s true, I recorded a CD with my friends Holy Nation called GETUP Vol 1, in 2005 that’s on iTunes. Yes, I did a live DVD taping last year with Kim Burrell as a guest. Yes, you have heard me sing with The Mississippi Mass Choir and even with the Mississippi Children’s Choir. Remember the song, “There is Hope?” Yes, that was me.
This is my take on the issue: I would indeed consider myself a professional singer. I’ve been doing it all of my life. I am not currently a signed artist so I’m not bound to a contract, which made me eligible for this show. I’m very grateful I had a little experience to even be considered in this BEAST-ful competition. Speaking of beasts, I’m honored to be in the top 7 with some amazing singers.
Brian W. Smith is always clean in his designer gear everyday! It matches his voice perfectly as he has such a crisp and clean sound. He’s a great guy with a great gift and he truly does have perfect pitch!
Martha Buries is so sweet, so cool and can SANG! I KNEW Martha was coming as the wildcard. When she was eliminated I was like, “Okay, Lord, she gotta come back because I prayed for her to stay.” And she did, BLAZING! She deserved it.
Durward Davis is my big brother. He has an amazing voice. The Lion and the Lamb, just amazing! We instantly connected and we are as David Wilford (beast as well) put it, covenant brothers. Did I say he has an amazing voice?
Leandria Johnson is so crazy and I love her! OMG she is so funny! I can’t wait for the world to witness her awesome personality away from the stage. Me and Leandria have this thing where we whistle and do whistle riffs and runs and everything. We are starting a whistle choir in 2011!
Tiffany Carlin-Laird and I really connected when I found out her first name and she said she didn’t like it. I thought it was a cool name but she chooses to be called Tiffany. I call her ICE. It comes from her first name, which I’ll let her tell you. It wouldn’t matter to me, though, if her name was Obededom! The girl can sang!
Goldwire McLendon is the greatest! I must admit, when we first met each other at the Hotel in New Orleans, I thought he was someone’s parent. I didn’t know he was actually in the competition. After I heard him, though, I knew he belonged here. He has a way of making everyone cry after he finishes talking/ministering to them. I got his number so whenever I feel like crying, I’m calling him!
It’s now time for the next chapter in the book of Dathan, and I must say that I have a feeling this one is gonna be better than the former. If you ask me if I’d do this again knowing the results, I’d say a 100 times YES! Stay tuned for more from me at www.dathanthigpen.com or www.facebook.com/dathanthigpen & www.twitter.com/dathanthigpen.
Much love,
Dathan Thigpen

We are so proud of Dathan here is Jackson, MS. He is dynamic and this interview continues to show the man of God he is as he speaks so highly of his fellow contestants. Dathan can sang and the anointing on his life will continue to develop in him and bring him before great men and women. God bless you Dathan. Love you much!
We were shocked to see you go, but not sad because we know who you are, and what God you serve. God’s spirit will live in you forever. You are a great example of what God can do, only if you believe in him. Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed. Love you!
I really hated to see you leave the show. It’s amazing to see people from my home state Mississippi doing big things in their lives. First David Armstrong with Ricky Dillard & New G and The Mississippi Mass Choir. Now Dathan. I recall watching Dathan perfom at Word and Worship a couple of years ago singing Clap Your Hands. His performance was off the hook then and again on Sunday Best Good luck in the future Dathan.
Dathan, what can I say? I told you that I loved how you were such a worshipper way back when you were one of my “kids” in the Jackson State University Interfaith Gospel Choir! And you continue to be such an awesome Worshipper!!!! Never forget that “ALL things work together for your good!” You represented all of us so very well and we are exceedingly proud of you!!!! I am totally confident that the BEST is yet to come for you!!! There are still so many opportunities headed your way. Just wait and see! Love ya like a son!!!!! – Bev
Dathan, you have been a blessing. This is not the end but a new beginning. You will be a signed artist soon and you will have your cd out within a year. My prediction. Keep on singing and being a blessing to others. Thanks again.
Woohoo for the whistle choir! Where do I get tickets?!

Yes, we all love Dathan here in Jackson, MS. He is an AWESOME singer. He sang at my wedding back in 2005. I believe in my heart that this is the beginning of great things to come. Keep on praising and worshipping him!!
I’ve known the Thigpen family since I was in elementary school and I must admit Dathan has always been anointed. From his mother’s voice to his father’s music, he has always heard the Word and has been able to interpret it for others to share. Knowing that Sunday Best was a step towards the greatness that Dathan is destined for made his leaving the show bittersweet. You know how u can see a child and just KNOW they have a higher purpose in this world?….well that’s Dathan! Keep striving to be the best Lil Thigpen! The world needs to hear the message God has placed in your heart.
Mr.Dathan, How could you not sing and be anointed? Your affliation with the best choir in the nation, Mississippi Mass speaks volume. I have every CD and video going back to James Moore. I enjoyed you and know that you will continue to be blessed and take your music to the world. God bless you.
THE JUDGE GET IT RIGHT THIS TIME ..
I LOVE LEANDRIA JOHNSON SINCE DAY ONE I THINK SHE HAVE A PHENOMENAL VOICE AND JUST LOVE HER ..MAKE GOD BLESS HER AND CONTINUE THIS COMPETITION WITH MORE SEFCONFIDENCE AND BELIEVE GOD NOTHING CAN TO MUCH TO HIM TO DO ..GIRL CONGRADULATION THE WORLD WATCHING AND AM TESTIFIE TO WORLD ..UK ,CANADA, EUROPE AND USA AND MORE..PROUD OF YOU …CONTINUE GIRL LOVE YOU..
Dathan, this was not the closing of a window of opportunity, but the busting down of a door to Gods choicest of blessings! We know your name now & are aware of your talent and we’re all standing with u in prayer til the manifested end! Your countenance is truly as bright as your future and each and every time u took that platform u ministered and God got the glory while we were blessed! Sometimes in our community ppl get caught up in hype and trip over diamonds to get to the showboats, and totally miss the heart of God which IS True Worship. There are great singers in SB,but remember-what God has for u,he’ll get it to u,and no man can stop it!Stay strong In the Lord and Thanks 4 being & yielding brother!Congrats on the new baby!!!
