VIDEO: Torrence’s Talk With “Still Trill Christians”

Sup folks, I’m really excited to finally bring you this interview that’s been a long time coming.
Now, it’s no secret that typically I’m not a huge fan of “Holy Hip Hop,” Gospel Rap, Christian Rap, etc. (It’s called so many things by different people and I wanted to get it right.) Now when I say “not a fan” that is not to mean I don’t like it, that’s a little different. Generally, it’s just not my thing because typically I find that generally it doesn’t grab me in the same way that some mainstream hip-hop that I like would (ok, a little corny). And even then, I’m not a fan of much of that either. You have to REALLY SLAY for me to like it.
BUT, this group is so different. If you’ve never heard of them, I want to introduce you to Still Trill Christians. I was privileged to see them perform last year at the Houston PPR 101 Conference where I was a panelist. Without taking up too much time let me set this up for you. Be clear, this was NOT a gospel conference. You all know that although I write this blog and consider myself a part of the gospel music industry, my “day job” covers all forms of music. So during the performance showcase I watched and listened to quite a few R&B and HARD CORE hip-hop acts. Some were good, some not so much, but it is what it is, but it was definitely not the atmosphere that I’d ever expect a Christian Rap (gonna stick with that) group to attend, much less TURN OUT the way they did. These brothers got up there with no pretense, no canned holier than thou rhetoric, etc. They introduced themselves and performed two songs that LITERALLY changed the atmosphere of the entire room! I’ve been a whole lot of places and have yet to see a group of young people effectively minister to this type of crowd the way they did. I’m not talking about a bunch of church kids into hip-hop. This audience was raw and THOROUGH if you get my drift! Aside from just being effective ministers in an environment that many performers would never be able to navigate, they were actually GOOD! I’d never seen anything like it. Folks who literally just came outside from smoking (and I don’t mean a pack of Menthols) and drinks in their hands began worshiping the best way they knew how and giving God praise. It was ridiculous in the BEST way!
So I’m gonna stop talking now but I want you to get to know the Still Trill Christians. They absolutely have my co-sign and full support on whatever is next for them.. find out more about them at www.stilltrill.com

Great interview Torrence! Went to the guys website and listened to “No Sex”. I think it’s a great song with a timely message. I look forward to hearing more from them.
I’m so proud!!!! Support the movement. GOD is taking over hip hop. I have real love for the clients
Ok, first I love how they did the publicity photo so that you don’t see how much shorter the one dude is. I had to comment on it. But for real, checked them out and they were really hot. I am a lot like you, I am very critical of mainstream hip-hop and consider a lot of it just terrible, so when it comes to Christian hip-hop because of the importance of the message and the reputation of the one you claim has sent you, Christian hip-hop artist usually get an extra hard side eye from me. Most of it is not just bad, it’s corny. Corny verses over corney beats. So I am very relieved that these young men have stepped up to the plate and have produced good music with a message that is clear and doesn’t make me want to laugh (like pentacostle papa). Any way, good interview and I can’t wait to see how these young men are going to change the game and hopefully even make some mainstream hip-hop artist step their game up.
I’ve known A.J. (the 1 with the dreads) 4 some years now & I just want 2 say I’m sooooooo proud of the Man he’s become. I used 2 b on him about making sure his lifestyle matched his message so that it comes across when the message is delievered. I’m so glad he’s doing just that and linked up with other young men that r doing the same. Thats the best way 2 have longevity in this industry cause gospel rap is not a poplar genre of music. Im very critical when it comes 2 the lyrical content, but no worries cause Still Trill Christians’ lyrics r scriptual. Keep up the good work guys. God’s going 2 continue rewarding u 4 spreading His word and “compelling men 2 come”. Love Yall
I actually found out about these guys in February. That’s when the buzz about them performin on 106 was circulating the net. One thing’s for sure, they didn’t fail to deliver. No Sex still remains my best song of 2010 so far! And I pray God will continue to use S.T.C to touch lives. God bless.
