Had To Share: Gospel Brat Pack Reunion This Summer?Published by Torrence Glenn on Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at 7:03 pm.
Hey folks. This one will be short but if you didn’t go to the Gospel Music Workshop Of America (GMWA) last year, then you may want to get a plane ticket to Cincinnati, OH this summer. Now this post will be what I call “good gossip.” It’s technically all hearsay and I don’t know if it’s completely true and the information is changing as we speak but I got it on good enough authority that I thought it was worth sharing. So if ANY of this changes, don’t go around saying I got the story wrong, ok? Thanks!
But anyway, those of us of a certain age probably remember the golden age of choirs where choirs and their directors were big deals in gospel. In the late 80’s and through part of the 90’s there was a group of choir leaders who lead the pack and were affectionately known throughout the industry as the “brat pack.” Well, I’m told that this year during the GMWA convention, Verizon will be presenting a Brat Pack reunion (partial) concert on Tuesday, July 27 featuring Donald Lawrence, Ricky Dillard and Hezekiah Walker. We got something close to it at this year’s Stellar Awards with Ricky and Hez joined forces to open up the show. But with these 3 all on one stage, you can best believe I’m going to LOSE IT!
But that’s not where it ends. I also hear that there will be a similar concert on Monday, July 26 featuring a “new” brat pack of sorts; choir and group leaders whom are carrying the torch today. The line up for this concert is still sketchy but names I hear being tossed around are Myron Butler, Vashawn Mitchell, Jonathan Nelson and JJ Hairston! I hope all of this turns out to be true! Either way I’ll be there!
