Listen Up!: Y’Anna – “Lookin’ Toward Heaven”

Please, please, please don’t shoot me. Today was a lonnnnng day and most of my blog posts went up late but there was no way I could leave you without your daily song as we continue our countdown to the release of Sunday Best 2 Winner Y’Anna Crawley’s CD “The Promise” next week! We’re almost there! August 24 is RIGHT HERE!
As I’m sure you know, I have the whole CD and have listened to it in it’s entirety which is why I can say this is one of my favorites on the CD. “Lookin’ Toward Heaven” to me captures the true essence of Y’Anna. Although she’s ridiculously talented and can sing pretty much anything, I think we all knew early on and agreed that Y’Anna is a “soul singer” and this track captures all of that. She’s known as the “sassy soulstress” and after listening to this song you realize why. The groove on this is SICK and vocally she shows she’s got STUDIO CHOPS! See, in gospel many of our artists can squall you under the table live or in church but sound like a cold bowl of oatmeal in the studio. There’s an art to it that separates great “singers” from ARTISTS and Y’Anna is an artist! I also love the lyrical realness of the song. Many songs talk about needing prayer and needing asap, but not with this kind of urgency. Just listen, with lyrics like this, you know she means business! “I just put the kids to bed, your keys were jing-a-ling at the door. My heart started racing, cuz I know where ya been: hanging out, getting high, chasing ‘those’ with ya friends.” (Take the “T” out of “those” and rearrange the letters and you know what it means. Rhymes with ummm HOSE! Ha!) This is one of those songs that make you make that scrunched up “girl you need a bath” it stanks so good faces when you hear it. Jill Scott, Erykah Badu and Angie Stone EAT YOUR HEART OUT. (I love those girls though!)
