TGIP: “Born Again” – Steve McCasterPublished by Torrence Glenn on Friday, October 29, 2010 at 4:32 pm.
Sup folks. Today’s “Thank God It Played” song is an a bit of a throwback, and by throwback I mean 2002! Ha! There’s a bit of a story behind this song so let me tell it.
Back then I was working with my ex girlfriend’s church choir for a concert and afterward I remained close with many of the music staff there and they asked me stick around to work on some other events they were thinking about doing. One day after a rehearsal, we were driving on our way to eat and the drummer said “Torrence, there’s this song I want you to sing for the open mic. It’s so you, you’ve got to hear it!” Now at this point in my life I had pulled back from singing almost entirely and focused more on teaching but he was intent and having me sing it so I said I’d listen. (Truthfully,I think the band just wanted to play it really bad and needed a vocalist but I digress.) So anyway, he pops the CD in and plays it and I was blown away. So I laughed, said “you’re CRAZY!” Sure I was flattered that he thought I could sing it, but at the same time, I’m no fool! Needless to say I never sang the song (the band was MAD) but I’ve been playing it ever since.
“Born Again” by Steve McCaster was featured on the compilation “Pure Gospel, Pure Flava” and like I said was released in 2002. I’ll admit, there weren’t many other songs that stuck out to me on it but this one track was worth it. Well, it popped on today so I figured I’d share. Listen and tell me what you think. It’s very straight ahead jazz, meets “neo-soul” meets almost funk….ok, that was a bad description. It’s just GOOD! Steve’s delivery is sooooo on point it makes no sense and the changes? BRILLIANT! Enjoy!
