Torrence’s Take on Sunday Best 5: Episode 10Published by Torrence Glenn on Sunday, August 26, 2012 at 9:38 pm.
What a huge and exciting night! Let’s get right into it!
Season 4 Winner Amber Bullock opened the show with the first single from her debut full length CD So In Love. Amber pulled that song off like only she can. She does a LOT of singing on it, but she can do it so it’s all good. The jazz, the turns, etc. We see why Amber took the title home. Loved it.
Alexis Spight opened up the competition portion of the show with “And Yet I’m Still Saved” By Donald Lawrence and The Tri-City Singers featuring Robin Rowe-Stewart. (Loved her!!!) I think Alexis did a good job with this. There were a few cracks but they weren’t the major kind. Just those incidental things that our voices do to us. She worked the song and the band and background singers gave her a lot to work with. She did good! Still get a little tickled when I see such a young woman singing such grown songs. Ha!
Joshua Rogers followed Alexis with an uber CHURCHED OUT rendition of Isaac Carree’s “In The Middle.” I didn’t even know the song could go almost revival style like that. Joshua squalled and hollered all over that thing. It was still good though, just a bit unexpected but I think it goes with knowing who you are and what you’re good at. It was a nice mix of church (his style) and contemporary (the style of the song.) And did you all catch that Prince “nod” in the music. Go Big Jim and band!
Vashawn Mitchell came next with “Turning Around For Me” and real talk, every time I hear this song I get a little “quickenish.” Ha! He and his singers killed and did you see the fit? The shoes were anointed for such a time as this and if Vashawn and I wore the same size, I promise you those shoes would disrespectfully disappear from his dressing room and find their way to my closet. Ha! But if you like “Turning Around For Me.” Make sure you go out Tuesday and pick up his new CD Created 4 This. It’ll get you real good. Ha!
Joshua returned for a second performance with “Lord Lift Us Up” by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes. A popular version of this song was also done by BeBe and CeCe Winans. I enjoyed this performance although it wasn’t necessarily my favorite. He exhibited a whole lot of restraint which was refreshing to see. But note, when I say it wasn’t my favorite, it by no means that it wasn’t good. Let’s say in a season of 9s and 10s this might have been an 8, so that’s no slouch!
OK, what is it about these seconds songs???? Like Joshua, this was no my favorite performance of Alexis. And like Joshua, just because it wasn’t my favorite, it doesn’t make it bad. I just prefer all the other ones! Ha! As we know from Alexis’ cover of Kim Burrell’s “Calvary” the girl has GUTS!!!! So to add that rap verse to the song took a lot of guts as well, but the judges seemed to love it so maybe her guts continue to pay off.
But here’s the thing about the judges. Their jobs are done and they no longer have any say. Now it’s up to you so go and vote right now!
So how did you feel about this episode? Who are you voting for? Who do you think will win? Let me know!
