Torrence’s Take On The Bishop Eddie Long “Situation” (The Aftermath)

Published by Torrence Glenn on Thursday, December 30, 2010 at 1:40 am.

This one will be short. Why? Because it’s late where I am and this whole story just sort of stopped, dropped and rolled away. Read the rest of this entry »

Update: Bishop Eddie Long Responds In Court

Published by Torrence Glenn on Monday, November 1, 2010 at 11:19 pm.

I know you probably thought (or hoped) this would go away but how could it? Sure, it got quiet for a little while, but silence has never signaled resolution and it certainly didn’t in this case. Although this whole debacle has been rather disappointing and troubling, for the first time I’m actually pretty sad and angry. Continue reading after the update to understand why.

Earlier today, Bishop Eddie Long filed responses to the 4 civil cases of sexual coercion that were filed against him and New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in September by Maurice Robinson, Anthony Flagg, Jamal Parris and Spencer LeGrande.  Essentially, denied all the allegations in the claims.

Bishop Long admits to the more general and harmless claims in the suits such as taking the young men on trips and occasionally even sharing hotel rooms with them; helping them out financially, giving them jobs, cars, etc., talking to them on the phone (even though he claims says he doesn’t remember who initiated the phone calls), that they called him “Daddy” as well as pop, Bishop and Grandaddy among other names. He also admits to hugging them but claims there was never any sexual or inappropriate contact. Read the rest of this entry »

New Birth Gay Member Speaks Out

Published by Torrence Glenn on Tuesday, October 5, 2010 at 4:55 pm.

Recently while in Atlanta, BET News Correspondent Tony Anderson caught up with members of Bishop Eddie Long’s church, New Birth Missionary Baptist Church to discuss the recent scandal that has plagued not only their Pastor, but the church as a whole. What’s different about this particular member’s view is that we haven’t been seen from other members that have been interviewed is that Samuel Brown is gay. Yep… We’ve seen interviews with various members of the church who have weighed in on the issue but none have identified themselves as gay so in the interest of PERSPECTIVE I thought it made sense to get another take.

Being that the claims against Bishop Long charge him with sexual coercion towards young men and not young women, I think Samuel’s perspective is rare and rather relevant to this situation. Take a look and tell me what you think. What he says may surprise you.

But I guess the big question is… Is he going to church next Sunday? Read the rest of this entry »

More From One of Bishop Eddie Long’s Accusers

Published by Torrence Glenn on Friday, October 1, 2010 at 10:01 am.

So I thought I’d been as far up to date as I could be on this story. After watching Jamal Parris’ and Spencer LeGrande’s on camera interviews regarding their alleged coerced sexual relationships with Bishop Eddie Long I thought we’d get a “break” for a while. Well, I just realized that there was more footage recently released from Jamal’s interview and it really adds another layer of “what in the world???” to this story. If you’ve followed this story you’ve heard most of his allegations but in this latest release, the “when and where” is probably what’s most shocking. Jamal Parris claims that the alleged sexual activity took place not only in his hotels and residences but in the church before and after service. IN THE CHURCH? Read the rest of this entry »

Today’s Bishop Eddie Long Update

Published by Torrence Glenn on Wednesday, September 29, 2010 at 7:32 pm.

So I’ve just accepted the fact that until this case is over, I should just prepare myself to have to do at least one post on Bishop Eddie Long per day because developments on this case are that ongoing. So here’s what we found out TODAY. (Yes, it’s getting messier.)

Spencer LeGrande, the 4th young man to file a lawsuit against Bishop Long, spoke out in a video interview today. Read the rest of this entry »

TGIP: Kurt Carr – “Don’t Let Your Light Go Out”

Published by Torrence Glenn on Wednesday, September 29, 2010 at 4:07 pm.

It’s been a busy last couple of days and it’s no secret that the Bishop Eddie Long scandal has been 90% of it. One of the most frustrating parts of it has been watching different media outlets cover this story who don’t get “us” (Christians, church folks, etc.) trying to dissect this issue. Now don’t get me wrong; sexual abuse, manipulation, etc. isn’t a spiritual or religious issue and I’m not saying it shouldn’t be discussed for the issues/news that it is.  But I’ve noticed a few things: Read the rest of this entry »

Bishop Eddie Long’s Accuser Breaks His Silence

Published by Torrence Glenn on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at 7:03 pm.

Well, we’ve heard from Bishop Eddie Long. We’ve heard from BJ Bernstein (the attorney for the plaintiffs in the 4 lawsuits.) But now for the first time since this whole debacle began, we hear from one of the accusers. Jamal Parris, the 3rd plaintiff to file a “sexual coercion” against Bishop Long spoke to reporters at the Fox Affiliate in Atlanta about his case and his relationship with Bishop Long. WATCH THE SHOCKING VIDEO HERE. Read the rest of this entry »

Torrence’s Take On Bishop Eddie Long’s Statement To New Birth

Published by Torrence Glenn on Monday, September 27, 2010 at 9:31 pm.

Yesterday Bishop Eddie Long spoke publicly for the first time about the 4 lawsuits files against him by 4 young men who claim that he used his influence and position as a spiritual leader to coerce them into sexual relationships. Many people, me included, were puzzled at Bishop Long’s decision to wait 5 days from the first allegation to publicly address the situation.

Hold up, let’s get this right together. THIS BLOG POST AND ANYTHING I SAY IN IT DOES NOT AND WILL NOT EXPRESS MY OPINION ON BISHOP LONG’S GUILT OR INNOCENCE. Still not clear? Let me try this again. Do not try and read into whether I think he did it or not. I won’t say, at least not yet. But what I will discuss are my thoughts on how he’s handled it so far and how I predict this may play out. Bishop Eddie Long Racks Up 4th Lawsuit

Published by Torrence Glenn on Friday, September 24, 2010 at 4:16 pm.

Well folks, this story continues to get more and more “interesting” and complicated.

We’ve just learned that a fourth young man, Spencer Legrande, 22,  has just filed suit against Bishop Eddie Long for sexual coercion. As a member and and while adjutant to the Pastor of New Birth Charlotte (in North Carolina) he claims that Bishop Long took him to Kenya in 2005 when he was 17 and began their alleged sexual relationship there. The suit also claims Bishop Long later encouraged him to move to Atlanta and that the alleged relationship continued there until 2009. Read the rest of this entry »

(VIDEO) Man On The Street: Bishop Eddie Long

Published by Torrence Glenn on Thursday, September 23, 2010 at 8:07 pm.

While we wait to hear what Bishop Eddie Long has to say regarding the allegations and 3 lawsuits so far filed against him, the folks over at BET News (shout out to Samson) took to the streets to see what people were thinking about this scandal. Like I’ve said before, this story will continue to grow unfortunately, but as it progresses I continue to think that PERSPECTIVE is important here in our discussions. Bishop Long didn’t just become a public figure because of this scandal; if anything, it’s only a scandal BECAUSE of his “celebrity.”  So with that, it makes sense to talk to the public and see what they’re thinking about all of it. They (or shall I say we) have a perspective too. Take a look. Read the rest of this entry »
