I’m really excited about today’s post because it’s no secret that Torrence is a choir head! Last October I had the pleasure of going to Detroit for the recording of Ricky Dillard and New G’s 8th CD, their first on new label Light Records. The first single off their new CD is a simple but HOT and effective choir groove called “God is Great” and the song is GREAT! Read the rest of this entry »

Still playing catch up with our Behind The Scenes interview and rehearsal footage from Bobby Jones Gospel. Last week, Ricky Dillard & New G performed brand new songs on the show and we finally got to see Dawkins & Dawkins back on stage together again also performing new music. So between one of my favorite choirs being on the show and one of my favorite groups being on the show, I was just a kid in a candy store and was foolishly excited! I caught up with all of them and had a great time connecting. We even put some rumors to rest. Watch! Read the rest of this entry »

Sup folks. Thanksgiving is only a few days away (and my stomach is shouting in advance, glory!) and although we know the food, family and fun are major parts of the celebration, we know the “intent” of the holiday is to to give thanks and show how grateful we are for all that we have. Although Thanksgiving isn’t necessarily a holiday that’s biblical and there’s some rather horrible history to the celebration (you know, the whole slaughter of Native Americans and such), I think it’s important to celebrate the sentiment more so than the history. Yes, you should be thankful ALWAYS but having a special time of year where you make it a major focus is rather great, at least to me.
So with that, today and tomorrow I’ll be sharing some of my favorite gospel songs of gratitude to help celebrate. So here’s part 1! Read the rest of this entry »

As I’m sure you’ve heard, Ricky Dillard and New G signed with Light Records this summer and they’re wasting no time in preparing to release a new CD. Know there were some speculation and questions on where Ricky would record. Would it be his hometown of Chicago? Or perhaps Detroit, a Midwest city that LOVES Dillard and New G? Or maybe in the DC/MD/VA area where I hear he’s been extremely well received in his new Minister of Music position at Ebenezer in Maryland. Well, we can now stop wondering. The Ricky Dillard & New G live recording will be in DETROIT, MI. Here’s all I know. Read the rest of this entry »

This one will be real quick until I have more time to talk to ya!
Dorinda Clark-Cole has just inked a brand new record deal with Light Records. I know there was some speculation about her deal with Verity and why she released her last “prayer EP” on an independent, etc. Well now you know. The scatting Clark Sister alto (or mezzo soprano if you will) we all know and love was making a move!
Light Records has been scooping up a lot of hot veteran talent recently and I kind of don’t think they’re done. First Ricky Dillard, now Dorinda Clark-Cole. Can’t wait to see who’s next!

Not too long ago, I told you that there was talk of a possible Brat Pack Reunion Concert at this year’s GMWA Conference in Cincinnati, well Ladies & Gentlemen, it turns out I was right. (hehehe) Donald Lawrence & Co., Ricky Dillard & New G, and Hezekiah Walker & LFC are joining forces for a concert that I know will be a highlight of the convention. See the official flier below for the Brat Pack Reunion Concert present by Verizon’s “How Sweet The Sound.”
Now I’m warning you right now. Read the rest of this entry »

Hey folks. This one will be short but if you didn’t go to the Gospel Music Workshop Of America (GMWA) last year, then you may want to get a plane ticket to Cincinnati, OH this summer. Now this post will be what I call “good gossip.” It’s technically all hearsay and I don’t know if it’s completely true and the information is changing as we speak but I got it on good enough authority that I thought it was worth sharing. So if ANY of this changes, don’t go around saying I got the story wrong, ok? Thanks! Read the rest of this entry »

Sup folks, why didn’t anyone tell me I hadn’t blogged in a little bit. Y’all know I need help! Ha!
But anyway, I’m excited about what I’m sharing today. I’m unashamedly a CHOIR BOY! I love all forms of gospel music and music in general, but I’m a church kid through and through and there’s nothing like some good ole choir sanging. Choirs have somewhat lost their place in gospel music over the last 10 years as more and more groups/ensembles and solo artists have kind of been moved to the front of the line. I sometimes fear that the appreciation and legacy of the gospel choir is in jeopardy. There aren’t many new choirs putting out music on a national level. If you listened to gospel radio or gone through the shelves of the local record store, there wouldn’t be much there. Of course choirs like Hezekiah Walker and LFC, James Hall & Worship & Praise, and Ricky Dillard & New G are holding it down, but they can’t do it alone. JJ Hairston & Youthful Praise also do an excellent job of maintaining the classic choir sound while still sounding current and relevant.
So with that, I’m especially excited to feature the music of Patrick Riddick & D’Vyne Worship’s new single “Testimony.” Read the rest of this entry »

Sorry folks, I’m in between 2 places and blogging from the Blackberry, so forgive any errors. Wanted to get you this info quick.
As you know, changes in Church leadership have been in the air. Well, as with Pastors, sometimes music leaders move around too!
Ebenezer AME church has tapped 2 UBER qualified artists I respect and admire to join their already mega talented music departments. Read the rest of this entry »
