Our Person of the Year

November 17th, 2008

Barack Obama

BET.com has named President-elect Barack Obama as its 2008 “Person of the Year.” We have concluded that no other person has had a more profound impact on Black America. Not only has he inspired a level of enthusiasm unprecedented in recent memory – prompting people of all ages and races to register, vote and become politically active – but he has inspired hope in a political system that many had written off as aloof, ineffective and uncaring. Obama smashed through the color barrier, crushing McCain and his female running mate, Sarah Palin, among women voters, African-American voters, voters under 30, Hispanic voters, first-time voters and voters who earn less than six figures a year. In his historic victory speech, Obama told a crowd in Chicago of more than 125,000, “If there’s anyone out there who still doubts America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of democracy, tonight is your answer.” BET.com believes that Obama indeed represents the epitome of the dream alluded to by the founders. Do you agree that Obama should be the 2008 “Person of the Year?”  Post your comment below.

As far as iam concerned president-Elect Barack Obama is indeed the Person of the Year, not only for what he was able to achieve, but indeed because he epitomize the American Dream.

I can’t imagine anyone else as man of the year, for BET, TIME, NEWSWEEK, or any other publications. I just can’t imagine it.

The announcement to run; the campaign theme and message (Change We Can Believe In); the win in IOWA (game changer); the speech in IOWA (vote changer); the battle for the nomination with Hillary Clinton (unrelenting); the choice of Joe Biden as Vice President (home run); the RACE speech (will go down as a great one); the Democratic Convention; the campaign against John McCain/Sarah Palin, the poised and steady hand he handlied the economic implosion (Presidential); the nearly flawless campaign, the win (historic), the “Team of Rivals concept (my personal favorite strategy); HIllary Clinton as Secretary of State and Eric Holder as United States Attorney General (my personal favorite nominee);; the inauguration ( I know it will be historic and memorable); Day one on the job (hitting the ground running- good idea); letting Americans know economy will get worse before it gets better (telling it like it is); the puppy mania (get the puppy soon); the First Lady (first class);the first daughters (cute as can be);
I can’t imagine anyone else being man of the year after all this. In one word:

this was not only a dream for mr. dr. martin luther king, jr., but for so many others…i’m 25 and i have never been as passionate about my voice being heard for anything as i was for this 2008 presidential election…when mr. barack obama won pennsylvania, my four year old niece said i’m glad mccain didn’t win, LOL…to know that someone has that effect on people, especially a four year old, is amazing…i cried when they announced our next president of the united states is barack obama…and i still shed a tear of amazment, excitment, hope, and faith everytime i think about it, see a picture of him and our beuatiful first family, and hear something about this great moment in not only history, but black history…i shed a tear for my grandfather who was a vetern who fought day in and day out so that his grand children, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren could witness this moment…i cry for all my ancestors who thought they would never see this day and for my brother (r.i.p.) who was not here to witness this…and for my four year old niece who now knows she can go a couple of steps further in this country…the best child of God, the best man won…congratulations, mr. president-elect, barack obama and strong black family

i think that Mr. Obama deserves “person of the year.” not only does he portray what the majority of America is, but he is also an inspiration to everyone, not only blacks. he has shown that it is possible to accomplish goals, hopes, and dreams with hard work and dedication. i know that race was a contributing factor for a large amount of people voting, but obama takes it a step further by encouraging everyone, no matter what race one is, to challenge themselves to work for what they want out of life without letting the issue of race being an obstacle. in all seriousness, obama is a very intelligent young man that has the compassion and potential to change America for the better. i urge everyone to follow in his footsteps of hardwork and accomplishments to better their own lives instead of depending on others for something that could be done ourselves. granted, it is a huge task at hand, but he is capable of handling it. so, to Mr. Obama, KUDOS TO YOU from new jersey.

THE CHANGE HAS FINALLY COME.YES, I DO INDEED THINK MR. BARACK OBAMA SHOULD BE BET 2008 PERSON OF THE YEAR. HE HAS INSPIRED ME IN SO MANY WAYS. HE HAS TOUCHED NOT ONLY THE AFRICAN AMERICAN COMMUNITY BUT PEOPLE FROM ALL RACE IS FASCINATED BY MR. OBAMA’S KNOWLEDGE AND WILLINGNESS TO MAKE THAT CHANGE. WE AS PEOPLE NEED TO COME TOGETHER AND HELP THIS PHENOMENON MAN TO CONQUER . JUST TO THINK BACK ON HOW MANY OF OUR ANCESTORS (AFRICAN AMERICANS) WAS TREATED SO BAD IN THE PAST,FROM MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. TO BARACK OBAMA, WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THIS DAY WILL COME. LET US REJOICE AND PRAY THAT GOD WILL BLESS AND SHIELD HIM TO DO WHAT HE NEED TO DO AS THE LEADER OFTHIS COUNTRY. GOD IS IN THE BLESSING BUSINESS. AND, I DO FEEL AS IF GOD HAS GIVEN US THIS EXTRAORDINARY MAN TO BE OUR PRESIDENT.
