Our Person of the Year
November 17th, 2008

BET.com has named President-elect Barack Obama as its 2008 “Person of the Year.” We have concluded that no other person has had a more profound impact on Black America. Not only has he inspired a level of enthusiasm unprecedented in recent memory – prompting people of all ages and races to register, vote and become politically active – but he has inspired hope in a political system that many had written off as aloof, ineffective and uncaring. Obama smashed through the color barrier, crushing McCain and his female running mate, Sarah Palin, among women voters, African-American voters, voters under 30, Hispanic voters, first-time voters and voters who earn less than six figures a year. In his historic victory speech, Obama told a crowd in Chicago of more than 125,000, “If there’s anyone out there who still doubts America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of democracy, tonight is your answer.” BET.com believes that Obama indeed represents the epitome of the dream alluded to by the founders. Do you agree that Obama should be the 2008 “Person of the Year?” Post your comment below.

I think your Choice is correct. For the first time in my life I have been overwhelmingly involved in the political process. I voted every chance I got in the past, because too many of our ancestors died for the basic right. But, never before had I wanted to learn about process. Electoral votes? Popular votes? I previously thought they were one in the same. But, Obama has inspired so many others like myself in a way that no other president has been able to do. I pray for his strength and wisdom, as he has the world upon his shoulders and I pray for his family. I am grateful to God that this has happened in my life time. To God be the Glory!
I voted for Mr. Barack Obama, Because I believe change has come, I never really care about who became President because nothing really never change when Mr, Cliton was President he treided but the people never gave him a chance to. Mr. Obama really is for change and its not just for one color He is for ever one, We as a people need to see this, I feel like they gave all the others Presidents a chance give Mr. Obama the same respect. He is man of the year because he never backed down he standing on what he has said and he is for all the people not just one color, GOD has bless the U.S.A with a GOD fearing mans for a reason. So far I see all colors coming together thats is whats GOD want, Mr, Obama keep up the good work and always keep GOD first. We the Wright family are with you and praying for all the way. GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY.
@PROVE……. 1st of all you need to get every last one of your opinions straight I his father is Kenyan. And according to Alan Keyes theres a possibility that he may not even be born here. 2nd of all obviously a uneducated uninformed person such as yourself know nothing about history. How can you possibly compare Martin Luther King to Barack? When Martin Luther King was only a CIVIL RIGHTS LEADER & Barack is a PRESIDENTIAL ELECT working for the positions of power? You tell me how are they comparable? The purpose of Martin Luther Kings I have a dream speech
((which is the only speech you probably know of))
The purpose of that speech was to inform the masses that no matter what race or creed you belong were all humans with messed up faults. Clearly on election day the majority both black & whites didn’t show that!! some voted based on the color of his skin, & some voted against him cause of the color of skin if you want to get technical both didn’t look at the policies. And only a few did, And how dare you say (PROVE) that we had a RIGHT TO HAVE LOW EXPECTATIONS OF OURSELVES because all 43 presidents were white!! It’s people like you that truly make me sick, are you forgetting, that we have black lawyers, black doctors, black professors, black inventors, black dentist, black scholars, black mayors & senators??? Are you saying they don’t count? And it’s you people with that same mind set that are killing us young black men in the street day by day night by night, As for your absurd comments about Hurricane Katrina listen you idiot Bush had nothing to do with that!! it was the state & local governments who failed the people in New Orleans,, people who are blaming Bush for that matter are just damn right ignorant. & Foolish & please don’t call me a hater I’m far from it, & if you was actually intelligent you would know that Obama & McCain weren’t the only 2 names on the ballot. Which obviously means I voted for a 3rd party choice genius. Well best luck to Barack I hope he does whats right (which I highly doubt)
BARACK OBAMA IS DEFINITELY THE PERSON OF THE YEAR! ‘CAUSE HE DESERVES IT 100%! BARACK OBAM IS THE MAN FOR THE JOB, SO ALL U HATERS NEED TO STOP ‘CAUSE I BELIEVE THAT BARACK OBAMA IS GOING TO GET US OUT OF THIS MESS! MAY GOD BLESS BARACK OBAMA AND HIS FAMILY!

Hi
Congratulations to the folks of America and all the African American for your best coice of the Person of the Year.
I am a African European, thus i didn’t have the CHANCE to vote for Barack OBAMA.
But in Paris i try to be involved in the Democrats abroad, Minority Caucus, managed by Zachary Miller.
Back OBAMA is strongely the kind of 21th century that would make enter the USA in the next chapter of Global History.
In Europe, we have been first to strenghten the importance of being a Peaceful, Prosper and Business friendly SuperPower.
BUT…
Our European Leaders all come from the ” Old Europe” and we this ow our turn to wait, hope for a Change in order to have more social, economic and ecologicall protection.
Our issues are not so violent as in the US because we are an Old Continent and we are not at the verge of disruptive innovations and drastic change.
What has been donne in the STATES would maybe take more time in Europe, but i am sure it would happen before i left this old world based on all the sufferings, the injustice of the past century.
YES EUROPEAN CAN EITHER !
B.Obama is my person of the year b/c ust d otha day my dad told me that he never thought he would live to see a black person as president. It seems like yesterday’s dreams are becoming today’s reality. That right there should let teens know that nothing is impossible and if you ever feel like that…just look at Barack and you’ll see you can do whatev u like. Thanx Barack and Michelle you made me believe again. BTW if you have nev heard ‘Chelle talk..u need to like NEED TO.
We all are proud of his father donating the sperm and his mother for donating the egg .
Without a doubt Obama is the man of the year. I’m from London and I must say that it was very nerve racking watching the elections as you almost set yourself for defeat. But thank God! The poeple’s voices have been heard and I truly beleive it was at too much of a risk for the American government not to pass Obama as the president, his popularity was cemented.. imagine the chaos if he had lost!
Im very happy mostly because young black men have a REFFERENCE on the TV, it’s not just rappers or the few actors in holiwood. Obama exudes positivity, education, hardwork, perseverance.. all key ingredients required to be THE role model. Im so happy that finally the world can see that we are an intelligent race and not just about guns, theft, violence as the media portrays… the ultimate self fulfilling prophecy amongst our youths.
Change has come, let’s make it count!
