Hazing Incident Lands Southern University Band Members on Probation

Three former members of the Southern University Marching Band were given probation for their involvement in a hazing incident that placed two fellow band members in the hospital last fall.

According to reporting from the Clarion Star Ledger/Associated Press, Lagarian Bridgewater, 23, of Baton Rouge, Clifton Taylor, 21, of Baker, Mississippi and Carlo Carter, 20, of Stone Mountain, Ga, were all placed on active supervised probation for two years.

The hazing incident was part of a Nov. 25 initiation into the marching band’s unofficial French horn fraternity “Mellow Phi Fellow”. As part of the initiation one of the aspirants was hit more than 50 times with a paddle.

Four other defendants, Joseph Webb, 22, of Columbus, Ga., Jeremy Dixon, 23, of Natchez, Mississippi., Aubrey Harris Jr., 21, of Canton, Mississippi and Harvey Harrison, 20, of Atlanta are to be sentenced in by the end of the year.

Now hazing has gone too far in colleges. Especially in black colleges like Southern University. Whoever’s responsible for the hazing incident should be suspended from that campus. Because It don’t make sense for that to happen.

This is simple…hazing should be made a criminal offence..i live in South Africa…we have countless Universities here, with a lot of history. Part of that history consists of initiation but nobody has ever landed in hospital because of the initiation process…

I’ve noticed that Universities in the States keep getting hazing incidents but nothing serious is done about it…let it just be banned…

Hazing is very stupid and unnecessary because Black colleges can’t be given a bad name as far as doing things such as hazing. I think the three guys that were involved need to be suspended from the campus b/c its also very ignorant to try an do a hazing incident.
