A “Jena Six” Teen Cops A Plea To Get Out of Jail Earlier

Mychal Bell, the last of the “Jena Six” teens still in jail, pleaded guilty to a single count of juvenile battery, for which he will serve an additional eight months to go with the 10 months he has already served. While it’s not the immediate freedom Bell and his family had hoped for, it could have been much worse. If he had gone to trial and been convicted for battery and conspiracy, the 17-year-old could have remained incarcerated until his 21st birthday. “This was a way to put a close to an event at a time when everyone had reasons to want it settled,” said Louis Scott, one of Bell’s lawyers, told The Associated Press. He and five other African-American teens were initially charged with attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder for a fight with Justin Barker, a classmate at Jena High School. In fact, it was the seemingly harsh prosecution by the LaSalle Parish prosecutor that put the tiny town of Jena, La., on the national radar screen. Critics argued that a schoolyard fight did not warrant charges that could have landed the teens in prison for more than 20 years. They also complained that the White students who hung a noose on a tree at the school – an incident that is blamed for triggering the fight with Barker – should have been charged with perpetrating a hate crime. In a massive rally on Sept. 20, thousands of activists poured into Jena – population 3,000 residents – to stand up for the Jena Six. Is this a fair deal?
This just goes to show how far we’ve gotten away from racism. Thank goodnes we have great civil rights activists around..

I DON’T KNOW WHO IS ADVISING THE KID AND HIS FAMILY BUT, THIS IS THE WRONG THING TO DO.
THERE IS NO APPEALING HIS CASE NOW WITH THIS DEAL ALSO,HE IS LESS LIKELY TO GARNER SUPPORT , MORE SUPPORT THAT IS, AFTER HAVING COPPED OUT.
THERE MAY HAVE BEEN SUPPORT TO COME FROM NATIONAL GROUPS SUCH AS, AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL FOR EXAMPLE OR, OTHER SIMILAR GROUPS.
TTHERE STILL NEEDS TO BE MORE DONE HERE, CHARGES AGAINST THAT DA THERE SHOULD BE ONE OF THE THINGS PURSUED AS WELL AS FEDERAL CIVIL RIGHTS CHARGES AND VIOLATIONS.

I agree with Keith Hudson. He is lucky to get off with that.. The NAACP knew that when they caused more problems in LA. Racisim is very much alive.. I know I am from the south.. But good luck to Mr. Bell in the future.. Next time he will not get lucky at all….
no its not alright!! its sad to say in 2007 we are still fighting for equal rights. This should be lesson to us all and as a community we need to stand by each other side and fight the cause instead of each other. Its is never going to end if we just give up, we have came a long way but we still a journey ahead of us.
So what do we do, let anyone who wishes to hang a noose hang one. Everyone knows (whites included) that white people think they are superior to us anyway and they can do whatever they want with no repricusions to worry about. Although its not right, I do understand why white people are hated. Some things they bring upon themselves such as this incident. Its just unfortunate for people of color that whites get away with a whole lot more than colored people, a whole whole lot more. Colored people punishments are ALWAYS more severe than whites and probably always will be. The way I see it, hopefully when God comes to claim his own we will finally all be treated fairly for a change. After everything we are going through here, Heaven’s got to hold something better for us.
Deal or no deal. Historically, Mychal Bell has just been lynched. He’s been pressured into admitting something he didn’t do;in order to, be released from jail. I don’t blame him. Look how long white racists incarcerated Nelson Mandela. These racists have the judicial system in their pocket. The evildoers will continue to use the judicial system against people of color and good conscience. Mychal Bell being forced to plea bargain is not fair, it’s white racists means of destroying his future. The evildoers who put up those nooses need to be brought to justice. Demand that they are through your elected officials,lawsuits, implement protest marches, boycott, and utilize voting power. Fairness is a myth in a white racist society. People of color would not have been slaves if the society in which we exist was equitable. Equity will not be given to us, we must continue to demand it through our elected officials,lawsuits, implement protest marches, boycott, and utilize our voting power.

I was a school fight, whether he a prior convictiobs or not, the treatment that he was served was just not right. He is a child!! I’m glad that he will be coming home soon!!!! Congrats Honey!!!
No, it is not fair I think that this should have stopped long before it started. And now they are want money, this is unbearable. That just let’s us further know that we need to keep our game up to make sure that the next generation does not fall into the same traps.

I think as a people we really need to wake up and pay attention on whats still happening in America. This is a simple situation of kids being kids and due to the color of six kids skin this is the justice they received when hanging a noose on a tree should have be treated as a hate crime.

I understand why he did it to avoid another trial, but now the parents of the white kid have filed civil charges and Bell has admitted hitting the kid and knocking him out.
They want to stop him from profiting by attaching any money he might make on a book or whatever. They even want to attach anything he might make if he starts playing football.
This is a crying shame.
