A “Jena Six” Teen Cops A Plea To Get Out of Jail Earlier

Mychal Bell, the last of the “Jena Six” teens still in jail, pleaded guilty to a single count of juvenile battery, for which he will serve an additional eight months to go with the 10 months he has already served. While it’s not the immediate freedom Bell and his family had hoped for, it could have been much worse. If he had gone to trial and been convicted for battery and conspiracy, the 17-year-old could have remained incarcerated until his 21st birthday. “This was a way to put a close to an event at a time when everyone had reasons to want it settled,” said Louis Scott, one of Bell’s lawyers, told The Associated Press. He and five other African-American teens were initially charged with attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder for a fight with Justin Barker, a classmate at Jena High School. In fact, it was the seemingly harsh prosecution by the LaSalle Parish prosecutor that put the tiny town of Jena, La., on the national radar screen. Critics argued that a schoolyard fight did not warrant charges that could have landed the teens in prison for more than 20 years. They also complained that the White students who hung a noose on a tree at the school – an incident that is blamed for triggering the fight with Barker – should have been charged with perpetrating a hate crime. In a massive rally on Sept. 20, thousands of activists poured into Jena – population 3,000 residents – to stand up for the Jena Six. Is this a fair deal?
i think that they should let her go.these police have no respect for us blacks and they do anything to keep us in jail.
Well I think that it is not fair that the boy has 2 spend 8 more months in jail after he spent 10.
It is not fair because if it would have been a white person he might not have spent any time in jail. Now just look at the Dee&Moore sitution the man was the number one supect in the case all they did not lock him up just let him go it took sixty years for him to get convicted. The KKK got mad at Moore because whistled at a white girl they picked Moore up hung him on a tree and beat him to death then set him on fire and he was still breathing when they set him on fire well any way the point is it took them sixty years to convit Dee and he only got 70 years with 50 supended so he is only doing 20 that is not fair at all. Well lets get back on subject it is not fair but like my mother tells me life is not fair. Now we all know that this was not right but what was done about the noose when it was hung up where was the concerned goverment then when the boys are reporting the stuff nothing is getting done then when they beat the mess out of him then they are so concerned.All in all it is not fair but it is what it is all i can say is Mychel keep your head up and i and iam praying for you out here god is love. $up@ Wom@n T@d@

He had a prior conviction so, I think the time he got was well deserved. Black or White right is right and wrong is wrong.
Of course I dont think the prosecutor was an angel. He was playing judge and jury!

What is the world coming to. Color should never an issue, when you do the crime you must do the time. I do not understand why, when a black brother/woman gets in trouble they blame it on race!!!!!!!!! and want everyone to feel sorry for them. Wake up America this is the world we live in. You put your hands on some one and cause harm to that person WHITE OR BLACK you should go to jail and do your time PERIOD!!!
No it was not fair and it will never be fair untli we as a people make this country take notice. The economic war that we did in November should be done once a month to keep America’s eyes on us. The only thing they respect is the dollar bill so if we withhold it from them, thry will be more than likely to treat our children fairly. and on the other hand we need to rein our children in so this will not be happening to them on a regular basis. There was no justice because there was no harm done. The whites started that incident and got what they deserved, beat down they have beaten us down for years and they never went to jail for it. Hell, they killed Martin Luther King Jr and Malcolm X and are still strutting around like WHAT?
no it is not fair i have seen many schoolyard fights and suspension from school or even expulsion but never to the extent that the prosecutors in jena have taken this and for the white teen that hung the noose not to be charged with anything makes it worse i think that the federal government should get involved and the prosecutors in jena should be charged with something so that they know they cannot get away with this sort of thing and even though they did not get to give as much time as they wanted they still won and we again get a slap in the face from the prosecution injust justice is always unfair
and to vicki i think that you are just stupid and if you have never seen a schoolyard fight kids dont go to jail for that and the fact that the prosecution went after black boys and tried to hang them out to dry just shows that race is always involved and i dont know if you are white or only think you are maybe you should try another website when someone hangs a noose around black people someone should get beat down do you have any rope?
Here we go again these Church Mongers making a statement about God coming such signs katrina etc. My Grandmother was born in 1892 and she told me that when she saw the first airplane fly over her house people said that the end of time was upon them God was coming.Some people even ran to hide.

I really dont think that his sentence was fair bc he had already served 8 months. I feel that they should had let him go with time served. I just hope that he learns from this and moves on with his life. Bc the truth is he was already in trouble b4 this happen,which means he may get in trouble after this happens. I just want him to know that he should count his blessing, do his 8 months and stay out the court room with these “WHITE FOLKS”.
You know what regardless of the time he got its wrong.When the the white boy hang the noose in the tree he should havce got served too but he did not but they beat a white boy and people my a big deal out of it.If there going blame someone blame the school a tree to seperate black and white is unexceptable.
The time is wrong. Regardless of what happened in the past, he should have been given probation and community service, but most importantly what about the white kids that nothing happen to. I am all for if you do the crime then you pay for it, but in this instead the crime do not fit the time. He should have been let free for time served. But in the end justice will prevail and the whites will get theirs.
I personally feel much safer with him locked up.
After he is released I am certain he will be back in jail in less than a year for committing some other violent crime.

I dont think that this was fair. He has already served 10 months. Thats enough for so little school fight. Let him go home to his family. He has served enough time.
