A South African Should Play Winnie Mandela, Not Jennifer Hudson

As filming will soon begin on a movie about the life of Winnie Mandela, a group of South African actors and Mandela herself are working to stop the film unless a South African actress plays the lead role.

Jennifer Hudson was selected for the lead role.

From TimesOnline

At a stormy weekend press conference, the Creative Workers Union of South Africa said that using foreign actors to tell the country’s stories undermined efforts to develop a national film industry. “It can’t happen that we want to develop our own Hollywood, and yet we keep bringing in imports,” said Mabutho Sithole, the union’s president.

South Africa has lost thousands of jobs as a result of the global recession, while a strong rand, driven by soaring gold prices, has increased costs and badly hit the film industry. “This decision must be reversed. It must be stopped now,” Oupa Lebogo, the union’s secretary-general, told The Times. Udo Froese, a close friend of Madikizela-Mandela, agreed: “There’s a lot of good local talent, why not use them? Winnie herself is not involved in this, and in no way has given any sort of green light.”

What are your thoughts? Should an African actress play Winnie Mandela.

What’s the big deal? Foreign actors come to America to act in movies and such all the time!

American will not understand period. And this is not an anti-american campaign. This is us South Africans protecting our territory.
This is about the South African movie industry been undermined and over looked by the money machine named hollywood.

The great Denzel himself did not do justice to the Steve Biko movie. Winnie Mandela is the wife of the great Nelson Mandela, this movie will sell regardless of who stars in it.

Imagine what a travesty it would be if a South African played Abraham Lincoln. This is how strongly we feel about our Winnie Mandela.

No disrespect to Jennifer (i love her) but “hell yes” why not give it to a home grown actor who dont have to learn the cultrue or the language for that matter. give a S’ african a first chance.

I don’t get the big deal.. so what if an American wants to play a South African? If it were not for them we would not even have a movie of this calibre. “Protecting our territory”what on earth? We not in war. I say this is a platform to show the world our stories.Selling something comes in an attractive package I who is a South African will not watch a movie with people I do not know. We should stop being so petty maybe if we had the money to produce our own international film’s then maybe we can cast our own actors/actress’s and stop wining so much.

Scottie, no disrespect to you either, but hell know Jennifer Hudson is not given up the role of Winnie. This is something she also holds dear to her heart as well. To play a major role that has substantial meaning. This is a story that should be told all over the world, not just over in S. Africa. We can not react to their demands just because none of them was considered for the role. The filmmaker and director wants Jennifer for the lead role. She will play Winnie and do a super job.

S. Africa, S. Africa, S. Africa………..

Jennifer should take the back seat on this one..Americans need to stop trying to tell the story of Africans.
