Americans Seeking Protection from Swine Flu
August 11th, 2009Hundreds of Americans in eight cities are lining up for experimental swine flu shots in a race to get a vaccine out in case the new flu virus regains strength this fall and winter. Sharon Frey, who is leading the government-financed testing at Saint Louis University, said scientists have been working late nights and weekends to organize the studies and recruit volunteers. “Typically it takes a year to do this,” said Frey, an infectious diseases expert. “I can tell you we’re working at breakneck speed.” About 2,800 people will participate in the government-led studies. Saint Louis University will test 200 adults and 200 children. Also under way are separate studies by five flu vaccine manufacturers under contract with the government. Health officials expect to have about 160 million doses available this fall, with the first batch sometime in September. The studies will test the safety and effectiveness of vaccines developed by drug makers and help determine dosage and whether it can be given with a seasonal flu shot. Participants will be given different combinations of two swine flu vaccines made by drug makers Sanofi Pasteur and CSL Limited and a seasonal flu vaccine.

Because of germ warfare being waged in many places, healthcare reform should be passed so that anyone sick with a contagious deadly disease can be helped before the thing is spread to everyone with or without great insurance. Healthcare is a thing that should be available to everyone regardless of social standing or job status. Only an idiot would deny good healthcare to the needy because they can’t afford it. Remember the plague killed a lot of people before someone realized how important sanitary habits such as bathing, washing hands, using bathtubs to bathe and washtubs for dirty clothing instead of rivers where people defecated diseased stool into water that everyone drank daily were to prevent disease from being spread.
American colleges need to lower tuition so that students can become educated, smart doctors and nurses that can start a practice without having to overcharge everyone to pay their loan back. America needs a giant rollback in the cost of living in order to truly end the recession. Some big money corporations will lose, but haven’t “we the people” lost enough already trusting in those who have all the power and money? Do the 85% of wealthy have the right to deny the poor good health or life?
