And You Thought Rap Beefs Started in the ‘Hood
December 29th, 2008
Yes, rap beef battles started in the ‘hood, says a professor at the University of New Mexico, but it sure wasn’t on the streets of New York City, Philadelphia or south-central L.A. In fact, says the expert on American and Scottish culture, it wasn’t even in the United States. Professor Ferenc Szasz contends that free-style wars, where two or more rappers trade syncopated insults, actually come from the ancient Caledonian art of “flyting.” He says that Scottish slave owners took the tradition with them to the United States, where slaves got hold of it and made it their own. It later came back in the form of rap, he says. “Professor Szasz is convinced there is a clear link between this tradition for settling scores in Scotland and rap battles, which were famously portrayed in Eminem’s 2002 movie 8 Mile,” The Telegraph reports. Said Szasz: “The Scots have a lengthy tradition of flyting – intense verbal jousting, often laced with vulgarity, that is similar to the dozens that one finds among contemporary inner-city, African-American youth. Both cultures accord high marks to satire. The skilled use of satire takes this verbal jousting to its ultimate level – one step short of a fist fight.”

It doesn’t sound like a rap battle it sounds like a heated argument to me a rap battle Is using Claver words while rhyming and not meaning it. I guess now Slaves were rapping. Holla At Yawl Like bad Kids!
I neva thought rap started in the hood…..always watch old movies and seems to me so much of the lines I hear coming mostly from blacks came from whites. I had to mention that first of all ….cause blacks always have picked up things from others..then they try and say they started it …it orignated from them. A lot of the things we say and do…started from some one else and not to mention some where else. LOL…whew let me say this…the only thing that I really remember blacks starting was the words …whew….BLACK POWER…now I will give us that….lol.
You people.
these reachers are trying to take every little thing from black people and now we have such an amazing art of free styling it began in scotland where i guess 1% of their people is black i cant believe this us black people need to shut those dummies up
i mean researchers not reachers
Rap is not real music anyway!!!!
I can rap to!!.I love big black me all the time they make my insides feel fine , pick me up throw me down turn me all around my sweet little bottom loves to be tosed around!!.give me a whoo whoo!!
the way some of yall make it sound it seems that white people raped over half of the black population whit is not true, we only mixed with like 5 percent of them or less and ive been to africa and there are light skinned girls and boys there so mixing with white people over 250 years ago is not how we go lighter cuz even if we mixed with them , we have since mixed with blacks ever since anc after a while you cancel that stuff out
I dont feel the need to give us credit for everything: Black people, but if there is any truth at all in this, then I will say that we are just a very Creative and Artful race of people, so the result is, that we make things better, because we do it big…
NO OTHER PERSON IRRITAES ME ON THIS SITE AS MUCH AS THIS FAGGOTT-A**, PUNK-A****, WANNA B BLACK SO BAAAAAD…DAVID! I WOULD LOVE TO SHAKE YOUR A*** LIKE A CHICKEN!!!! TAKE YOUR COMMENTS AND YA TIGHT A***** BACK OVER TO MTV.COM…PLEASE WE SICK OY YA!!! FEEL ME
actually freestyle battles started in africa….Im so sick of white people trying to take credit for everything we created. When the truth is, black people really created 90 % of everything the U.S is doing today. Blacks even invented 90% of the things we use and need today.
I thank God that this nation allows us to speak our minds freely without persecuting or prosecuting us. That being said, please, beautiful people, don’t start a tradition of crucifying individuals for simply speaking their minds.
On a different note, the Scottish were not the first ppl to craft their speech into a back-and-forth ritual. If anything, I would attribute the origins of freestyle/rap/poetry period to Africans. If anything, the Scottish picked up on the “syncopated insults” of our African ancestors, and not the other way around. This explains why Eminem appears to be the only white dot in a sea of chocolate rappers.
It is because of Africa that we now have the drum, beatboxing, martial arts, and various dances (e.g. tap and krump). In closing, the Scottish, as lively as they are, should not be credited with starting rap or rap beefs. If you don;t believe me, delve further into the truth my ppl. Reading is fundamental lol. Peace and love beautiful ppl
