Another Law Targets Saggy Pants

July 22nd, 2008

The latest penalties include a $25 fine and even jail time

Saggy Pants
The crusade against sagging continues as the Chicago suburb of Lynwood has become the latest community to slap a fine on young folks who think it’s hip to show their underwear in public. Eugene Williams, mayor of Lynwood, led the campaign to impose $25 fines against anyone who reveals three inches or more of their drawers. But Lynwood’s new law isn’t the first of its kind. Just a week or so ago, Flint, Mich., showing its utter disdain for the fashion trend, says it will throw offenders in jail. Leading that city’s crusade is the new chief of police, David Dicks, who calls sagging “immoral self-expression,” reports Mary Chapman and Jessica Bennett of Newsweek magazine Their article suggests that Dicks, like officials in other cities with anti-sagging laws, are at least partially angered over the roots of the hip-hop clothing trend – prison, where inmates’ pants often hang off their butts because they don’t get belts. To find out other reasons mentioned and what the NAAPC had to say, go to BETlcom/News. What do you think about laws targeting saggy pants?

Lynn: I meant your first comment got me rolling…

This law will definitely add to more legal problem for our youth. I agree with a fine that can be paid but being sent to prison is way to far, that just adds to the long list of reasons they (the man) has to lock us up and ruin our lives.
We need to understand that there’s a difference between wearing baggy jeans that are comfortable and wearing pants down to our knees for no apparent reason.

!!! IN JAIL I COULD UNDERSTAND, THEY DONT HAVE BELTS SOMETIMES, BUT THESE KIDS WITH THEIR PANTS SAGGING IS HORRIBLE, NOW MY QUESTION IS, WILL IT GO THE SAME FOR THESE STARS THAT ALSO WEAR THEIR SAGGY PANTS, OR IS THIS JUST FOR REGULAR KIDS? IF U ASK ME, IT SHOULD APLY TO EVERYONE , BUT I THINK JAIL TIME IS A BIT TOO MUCH!.

when will women showing off their boobs be found criminal? Let us look at who pushed for this to be a crime…men. So of course they don’t care if a women exposes her thong, butt cheeks, or boobies. They want to see that.

When will the community take action and demand that this ridiculousness stop? This is a fad that will pass, just like low-rise jeans for women. If more white kids did this, would this be criminalized?

Why would we want to look like slaves anyway.

poison control Said on

Its so ignorant how many of us feel we have to beat our children and stuff the bible down their throats to turn out quality adults. Interview most people in jail and they definately were beaten in childhood and exposed to the bible. Some met their criminal friends in church. Perhaps we should model moral behaviora at home, model a thurst for knowledge a education, and give children a graduated sense of responsibility from a early age on up. We need to go back to our roots and realize that children need a sense of responsibility for something beyond themselves so that they wont be these immature, hedonistic teens and young adults. Model the behavior first.

Listen most of these guys are GAY you know this started in prison and these are closet guys but they would never admit it.

I guess this is a sticky situation. It seem a little harsh to go to jail for wearing pants below your waist; nevertheless I hate seeing their underwear. what is the purpose? What statement are they trying to give? Why do they want to show their underwear or walk around holding on to their pants to keep them from falling off? It does not make sense to me but I guess it does to them. I do think it is distasteful and very disgrading.

On the same note, I dislike seeing women showing most of their breasts or those short skirts where the woman has to hold her hand in front of her legs when she sit because the skirt will not hide her underwear. Fine these women if they are going to fine these men. Neither one should have the right to show their underwear in public.

SASSYME Said on

WOW THAT IS STUPID THE ONLY REASON THEY IS DOIN IT IS TO SEPARATE THE BAD PEOPLE FROM THE GOOD…..NEXT THING WE KNOW THEY IS GONNA START SAYIN GIRLS CAN’T WEAR SHORT SKIRTS OR SHORTS AND CAN’T SHOW CLEVAGE WHO IS THE GOVERNMENT TO DETERMINE WHAT TO WEAR AND HOW TO WEAR IT ITS A FREE COUNTRY NOT THE F***** NAVY OR ARMY WHERE THEY CAN TELL YU TO WEAR A UNIFORM

I feel that wearing saggy pants is not hurting anyone, although I may be greatly disparaged by some, saggy pants are not in the forefront of problems in America today. Get gas lower and more young black men like me in college and then we can talk.

Lynn: the mindset that I am ‘with the devil’ or that i’m a part of a cult just because i don’t believe in religion/God, is the same mindset the empires of the Dark Ages had when they forced others to believe in their God/religion. Me saying that the most tangible ‘God’ is our Sun is just realistic. Our earth is about 4.5 billion years old…due to the perfect mixture of gases/sunlight/water, life formed…this is science.
Larry: man wrote the Bible….yes?

Billie Walker Said on

a $25 fine is bad enough…but prison?! come on!!
like one of the comments i read above…its just a fashion trend like platforms in the 70s
It won’t be that long before boys stop doing that, so it is unessecary to make this part of the law when there are much more important matters to worry about than how boys wear their jeans! or is this fine just an excuse to get even MORE money out of American citizens??

hmm…

Bro. Jay Said on

Well Emeka that’s the problem were trying to get more young men in
college like you ,but they keep tripping over their pants legs because
their pant’s is hanging off their butts.

marknorthwest Said on

What will be next, sagging breasts and saggy butts? Maybe our elected officials should concern themselves with health care and help people lose their sagging stomachs!

kforU Said on

I don’t agree with the law at all..talk about targeting black people for real this is a style stemming form hip hop a culture for alot of young people…i don’t like it but oh well i don’t have to look at it..if the government don’t like it so much then they can start buying their clothes unless you buy their clothes i don’t think that they have the right to say anything about it..and if you pass this law then you should make it mandatory for woman to wear clothes that cover up their parts too.at least these guys are just showing their under wear, but some woman actually show their goods, what about those gothic kids with the makeup and piercing and tattoos can’t leave those out, their just as offensive to others as well..they make me want to wear my pants low so i can see myself get thrown in jail..i would sue the fuc* out of the legislative for not passing laws against all of the other stuff mentioned because thats discrimination..young woman showing their ass is worst then some guy showing his under.. tryy me..

D Said on

Come on now…..looks like these people apparently don’t have more pressing crimes to deal with and now they’re trying to be the Fashion Police. If folks aren’t showing their naked azz then leave them alone. These are the same politicians/officials who spent time in strip clubs or watchin young girls walk down the street wearing Daisy Dukes and NEVER had a problem with it. I’m not going to go as far as to brand it racist, but a majority of young Black men and women wear their clothes like this. Just because they refuse to conform to what these politicians/officials feel is appropriate they shouldn’t have the right to ban it just because they wouldn’t wear it.

aaron Said on

this is rediculous if they really enforce the law like they say then the prisons would b filled with people who arrested just bcause where sagging there pants. So many people do it, so are they all criminals?

and what about women who wear shirts that show there stomachs is that also considered insicent exposure because I just think of it as a trend that people do.

Just Saying Said on

I definitely don’t agree with the pants sagging trend, but a law about it is ridiculous. This particular situation may be a small thing, but what’s next? Are we gonna have a dress code for America, with violations punishable by jail time? Cause I’m sure regulating the way everyone dresses will fix our problems with crime, health care, racism, and the many other problems our city, state, and federal governments should be worried about.
GIVE ME A BREAK!!!
Time should not be wasted on making a law about something simply because it annoys some people.
I do hope the trend dies soon though.

Just Saying Said on

Waisting money on frivolous crap like this is one of the reasons this country has a deficit right now.
